First One Fills the World

The story of First One and how he brought people into the world is the most influential of Oceanfolk legends, despite appearing only halfway through the Oceanic Era. It is the foundation for the (now discredited) idea of the Deeps as a dangerous place where the dead reside.

Summary

The following is the oldest attested version of the legend: Expand/Condense
The place of death is cold and dark, deep and silent, and presses in on every side. The people move through Death without seeing and without hearing, without touching and without feeling, and without changing.   Only First One ever came out of Death by himself. He walked with the fast water until he came out of Death, and he found a place that was bright and open, warm and wide, and all new. But the water was still and the land was bare, the air was quiet and the sky was empty, and he was alone.   Then First One went back into Death and found Seed Woman. First One and Seed Woman walked with the fast water out of Death and into the new place. Seed Woman walked away over the new place, and her seeds went into the ground and grew into trees. Then the water went to the seeds and the land was filled with trees, but the air was still quiet and the sky was still empty, and First One was still alone.   Then First One went back into Death and found Leaf Girl. First One and Leaf Girl walked with the fast water out of Death and into the new place. Leaf Girl walked away over the new place, and her leaves went into the trees and grew into branches. Then the water went to the seeds and the land was filled with trees, and the air carried wonderful smells and the sky was filled with leaves, but First One was still alone.   Then First One went back into Death and found Dance Boy. First One and Dance Boy walked with the fast water out of Death and into the new place. Dance Boy walked away over the new place, and his dance went into the branches and grew into wind. Then the water went to the seeds and the land was filled motion, the air carried joyful sounds and the sky was filled with leaves, but First One was still alone.   Then First One went back into Death and found Rain Girl. First One and Rain Girl walked with the fast water out of Death and into the new place. Rain Girl walked away over the new place, and her rain went into the wind and grew into waves. Then the water went up and down and the land was filled with motion, the air carried joyful sounds and the sky was filled with clouds, but First One was still alone.   Then First One went back into Death and found Breath Woman. First One and Breath Woman walked with the fast water out of Death and into the new place. But Breath Woman did not walk away over the new place. Her breath went into the water and swam away. Her breath went into the land and crawled away. Her breath went into the air and leaped away. Her breath went into the sky and flew away. But Breath Woman, this one, stayed with First One. Then the water went up and down and the land was filled with motion, the air carried joyful sounds and the sky was filled with clouds, and First One stood together with Breath Woman in the new place.

Historical Basis

Based on the similarities between the legend of First One and the Valdian Songs of Journey, we can assume that our legend is derived from theirs. The Song of Journey is no more factual, but stripped of its fantastical elements it is the story of a small group of people migrating from a dangerous place to a safer one. That journey is recognizable as the core of First One's story.

Spread

The transformation of the Song of Journey into First One filling the world is undocumented. The legend of Tiamou's Voyage, thousands of years older, is preserved because several Tiderider families tried to use it to support the longevity and legitimacy of their matriline. There was no similar motive for recording the legend of First One until it became associated with ocean worship. By that time it was already close to its current form, and well known among Tideriders and atoll dwellers alike.

Variations & Mutation

One pattern evident in variations of the legend is simplicity. The Songs of Journey are long and complex, with many more names mentioned than listeners can be expected to remember. First One's story contains only five people aside from himself, indicating that the original Songs had been drastically shortened to fit a sailing culture in which no audience could be expected to sit for hours listening to stories without interruption. Some island versions simplified it even more, reducing the five people First One finds into impersonal attributes that he carries to the new place.

Cultural Reception

For 5000 years the legend was believed as truth by everyone who lived at the mercy of the ocean's winds and tides. After the Cluster Islands were settled, residents of the larger islands were first to reduce their dependence on ocean rituals and stop taking the legend seriously. Tideriders later followed suit, in large part because the trade routes along the islands were much shorter and less risky than the ones that crossed the ocean gaps back and forth. Followers of the philosophy called Tactilism are probably the last to hold any belief in the legend and what it represents; their belief in hands as the superior tools comes from the much-reduced atoll version in which First One (reduced to "The One") gathers attributes in his hands to release into the world.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I wanted it to have an oral history feel, but still fit with the real history.

From The River to The Ocean, a civilization grows up. Under them both lies The Deeps.
