The Entrance to the Nightlight Zone

The Gatekeepers have been shown to operate on a schedule. Once a month, when the tide is highest, these beings appear out of thin air, either by some form of teleportation or by simply manifesting themselves at will. They stick close to various coastlines around the world, where they simply walk wherever they please. As they traverse over the ocean, they attract all kinds of animals towards them by their own will, where they then create whirlpools to transport them down to the Nightlight Zone. They can also transport humans and certain types of machinery if they get lucky enough, and it is thought that the Gatekeepers are responsible for a small amount of ship disappearances for this reason.   Whenever the Gatekeepers do manifest themselves, a thick fog will envelop whatever area they find themselves in. The winds will blow in a circular motion around them, and multiple water spouts can be seen swirling around the group of the beings. These weather affects seem to be a byproduct of the beings trying to hide themselves from humans. There also seems to be some importance to their schedule, as there have been multiple recorded instances of the Gatekeepers creating harsh natural disasters by appearing in the same area for more than once a month. They can cause hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, or even combinations of disasters from their effects on the weather spiraling out of control. This, in turn, is caused because their effort of keeping themselves hidden is intensified over time. These disasters are detected by humans, though most are unaware of their true causes.

The Gatekeepers only appear along coastlines, where they have the potential to be detected by humans living in coastal settlements. It is unknown why this is the case, given the Watchers' goals, but they bring in large enough hauls of ocean materials as it is.

Predictably, they are seen by humans in some instances, but only an extremely small percentage of the population can see them in their true manifestation, leading to sightings being extremely scant. No one knows why there are certain people that can see them, but it is thought to be due to either genetics, or a simple supernatural effect on the human race. There is also a high concentration of people that can see the Gatekeepers in Oregon, USA, the same place where the urban legend originated.
