"Depending of the part of the world you may be in, stories about elves will occur more or less often and surely change a lot. Some people will actually go as far as telling you they have seen or even talked to one.It is true to say that in stories, elves are assigned variing characteristics. The can be beautiful or horrible to look at, standing tall and proud or crouched almost to the ground. Sometimes they are wise and goodnatured merry people, sometimes they are cruel and brutal people.
In fact they are mentioned in ancient scrolls multiple times. But then, so are gnomes and giants."

But in every story elves know magic. The way they use it may vary, but alway they are very powerful being who´s wrath easily destoys whole villages.
Another common trait is their faible for woods. In few stories only elves are met on the road or under the open sky. The live in the woods in dark places where they dance and sing and watch the wanderings of moon and stars.
