Yeofly and Mangot

The Yeofly and Mangot are a pair of species, on an animal, and the other a plant, that share a strong symbiotic relationship. The Yeofly is a species of large, predatory fly which shelters in the Mangot and hunts other insect species. It then returns to the Mangot which digests excess material from the Yeofly, which is a secondary food source. The Mangot is a flytrap type plant that will attempt to eat any insect that enters its trap. However, the Yeofly has adapted to be resistant to Mangot digestive acids allowing it to shelter in them. This provides a safe place for Yeofly larva to live. Originally found on the planet Miranda in the Prospero System, these two species have been partially domesticated and are used on a lot of organic farms and orchards as a natural pesticide that can likewise be harvested for food products.

The Yeofly

The Yeofly is a species of large presocial, predatory fly that is highly adaptable hunting other smaller insect species. It is widely known to eat very "messily" with a lot of excess material not being eaten but stored on the rest of the Yeofly's body. This food storage is believed to have originally been a means to allow the Yeofly to go for longer periods before hunting. However, since developing a symbiotic relationship with the Mangot, the Yeofly's excess food is broken down and consumed by the plant, which digests it off of the body of the fly. Yeofly larvae are protected by the Mangot and consume excretions from it. The Yeofly in exchange has a place to shelter itself, and especially the more vlunerable larvae which consume excretions from the plant. Adult Yeoflies are quite massive and can be harvested for their meat which is typically described as tasting similar to gastropods like Earth snails, though they can be considered somewhat difficult to handle, requiring specialists somewhat akin to beekeepers in order to raise and harvest.

Mangot

The Mangot is a species of carnivorous plant that subsists primarily on insect species, or from the excess, stored food from Yeoflies. It is a pitcher plant type species, with a broad, some may say beautiful, vase like stalk that produces a sweet smell that draws in insects. Those that are attracted find themselves unable to escape the body of the plant where they are broken down by its digestive enzymes. The only exception to this is the Yeofly, which is resilient to the entrapping and digestive secretions of the Mangot, and indeed the larvae eat the attractive secretions of the plant, while being protected from other predatory insects by it. Mangot sap (the attracting secretion) is safe to consume in small amounts, producing a sweet, fruity flavor, and is frequently harvested as a natural, plant-based sweetener, such as in Barnard's Delight.
