World Ember 2024 Pledge

Phase 1: The Pledge

Last year, I tried to hit the 50,000 cap. However, life got in the way. As this is probably going to be the last year I will be able to dedicate the same amount of time and effort to a major project like this, I will go for the shiniest of badges once again. Hopefully I won't suffer from the same troubles again.

Phase 2: Areas of Focus

I have a multipart plan for areas of focus. For the most part I will be working on content for this particular world, The New Frontier. As I do like to use the competition entries as a means of focusing my work (even though I fully know I will never win), I will be focusing on filling out as many of the individual prompt categories as I can. I will be doing The New Frontier first, but I may use the prompts that simply do not work with The Frontier as an excuse to return to Getninia for a bit. I will prioritize the following 3 things, clearing out prompts, first, then continuing using the following areas of focus as a guide.   1) My adventuring party is going into a major, possibly campaign changing adventure over the course of this month, and probably for the next few months. Indeed, it may be the time characters are put to rest, or the campaign itself comes to an end. For such a momentous occassion, I have prepared, to put it scientifically, a metric fuckton of notes into my private prep journal. I will be transforming these notes into articles as the adventure continues using the competition prompts as some scaffolding.   2) I have been referencing a number of events, organizations, and technologies repeatedly in my development of the world. If needs be, I will likely dedicate the next bit of my focus around filling out these long neglected areas of the worldbuilding, as I really need to get over my fear of whatever I produce not being good enough to match the influence they have.   3) I have an extensive backlog of notes, worldbuilding elements, and the like that I really should start cleaning up. Since worldember focuses on bulk output rather than meething specific prompts, I'm probably going to focus on Civilized Space, as I've been neglecting that key area of the galaxy, over the Frontier.

Focus

MINIMETA 2024 Point 1

During World Ember 2024, I will be focusing on turning into articles, the adventure notes from the current campaign I am running in the world. It will focus on the civil conflict in the Chang-Er system, a relatively small but very imporant world, and may end up including major changes to the balance of power within the system.

MINIMETA 2024 Point 2

The next focus point for World Ember will be some of the basic concepts and important history. I've been neglecting to include articles for that content, partially because I've been unable to write articles worthy of the importance of these events, organizations, and concepts. But since I'm going all in this year I figure now will be the time to flesh out some of the important history of the world.

MINIMETA 2024 Point 3

After both of these focus points, I will lastly focus my work on finishing the basic stuff for Civilized Space. Due to IRL concerns I've been slow to work on these elements, but I would like to have the core area of Civilized space mostly, if not completely, finished to at least the Sector and State level.

Phase 3: Some Spring Cleaning

For this week's homework I mostly did a little bit of Spring Cleaning. I shortened the homepage considerably, shuffling a lot of the information that should be in a primer into the new primer I created. I changed the theme to something hopefully a little more readable, as well as adding a swanky new global banner. I'm currently working on some CSS skills to actually make my own theme, and I did tinker a little bit with my sticky sidebar widget to hopefully make it work better, but my skills aren't up to making my own theme from scratch yet. Lastly I added a the follow button to the top of every article.

Phase 4: Grabbing those Inspo Points

The Watchlist

For this year, I didn't watch a whole lot, or read for that matter. That matter, despite how busy I was, I was able to re-watch the Villineuve rendition of Dune, and its sequel, as well as finishing my reading of the Three Body Problem. I've also read some Sufi poetry, which was not necessarily the most obvious inspiration, but it did give me an idea for one of the articles I intend to write next month.

Playlist

Its still under construction, but I've tried to create a playlist that captures all of the themes for the world with a few discreete chapters that cover the feeling of one of the world's themes.

Phase 4: Honorary Horrario

This year my schedule will allow me a good chunk of writing times on Mondays, on Fridays, and during the traditional weeked. I will therefore do the bulk of my work then. On Mondays and Fridays I expect I'll be able to average an output of approximately 2000-4000 words per day. On weekends I have more or less open time, though I expect I won't be writing nonstop all day every day, I therefore expect I'll be reaching closer to 6,000-10,000 words on weekends depending on the topics I'm going to be working on, I expect I'll save the more challenging work for these days, so that I can focus, though depending on how time works I may just use them to blitz articles. In order to meet my self imposed challenge however, I'll need to make an average about 1,700 words a day so depending on the sitch I may need to adjust accordingly. I've joined the Discord and the Reddit, and to grab more eyeballs I'll be making use of these more to give heads up to the community, but overall to maximize word count I will need to disengage from social media for a bit.
