Rescue Society
The Galactic Rescue Society, usually known just as the Rescue Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping stranded travellers throughout Civilized Space, though in recent years it has started to expand its operations to the Frontier as well. It operates an enormous fleet of jump tugs which patrol throughout the galaxy, focusing on the "empty" parsecs which lack a convention star system. When one of these jump tugs encounter a stranded vessel they will contact them and offer their help. The Rescue Society in this way has saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of lost travellers throughout Civilized Space.
Structure
The Rescue Society is a highly decentralized organization, with dispatch centers operating at a sector level with a nominal first among equals with the Sol based center. Dispatch centers do collect some information on lost travellers, but their main function is as the heart of fundraising operations. These fundraising crews spread out around the sector to help collect money to support the society's fuel expenses. However, the majority of the society is oriented around semi-independent crews that do the actual charitable work of maintaining the society's mission.
Public Agenda
The Rescue Society's primary aim is the seeking out and rescue of travellers stranded in the dark parts of the galaxy. Due to the increased risk of misjump since the Great Cataclysm, many crews, either to poor astrogation, or poor engineering will misjump to an unintended location, and oftentimes are deposited in a "dark" parsec, that is one without a viable star system. The Rescue Society intends to find as many people stranded there without fuel and bring them back to safety as quickly as possible.
Assets
The Rescue Society possess one of the largest fleets of jump shuttles in the galaxy, including what is likely the largest known collection of the venerable Type 615-Z Jump Shuttle in the galaxy. This fleet of Jump Shuttles is supported by a fairly large number of surveyor ships of various makes, heavily modified with the best available sensors and a large number of grav beacons that support the operations of the jump shuttles. The society also maintains a small network of bases that assist with their operations. However, despite all of these assets, the Rescue Society relies heavily on maintaining good relations with most freeports and the goodwill of the general public to maintain their operations as their mission is extremely expensive to maintain and they maintain no commercial ventures on the side.
