Jump Phantoms
Jump Phantoms are a psychological condition caused the interaction of latent Psionics and poorly formed jump bubbles. When an untested psion interacts with leaking energies from a poorly formed jump bubble they can be afflicted with psychological symptoms starting with phantom voices, to severe nightmares. After enough exposure, the latent psion will eventually have a psychotic break that appears similar to possession by an unknown in this entity. In this state, the afflicted is extremely dangerous, at high risk of causing damage to a ship in jump and risking its destruction. Jump phantoms, despite their rarity fuel bigotry towards psions in many areas of the galaxy. This condition is relatively newly discovered, with no reported cases prior to the discovery of the first psionically gifted individuals, and only being rarely encountered before the Jred Scourge, but is more common in the modern era.
Game States
Nature:Psychosomatic, Psionic Disease The exact circumstances of transmission of this disease are unknown, but widely believed to be the result of poorly formed jump bubbles allowing jumspace energy to leak into a transiting starship. It is commonly accepted that person to person transmission is likely impossible. Stage 1: After an incubation period of roughly 24 hours, the infected suffers from mild hallucinations, bad dreams and other mild pschological symptoms. No gameplay effect. Application of psi suppressing drugs will halt symptom progression for as long as the suppressants are active. Stage 2: After the afflicted has suffered from stage 1 symptoms for approximately 36 hours, they progress to stage 2. Patient's hallucinations become more severe, and hypothalamus shows significantly more activity, leading to irritation, and enhanced aggression in afflicted. Reduce INT by 2, and increase PSI by 2 per twelve hours. Application of Psi suppressing drugs will halt symptom progression for as long as the suppressants are active, but will not recover stats. Stage 3: After the afflicted has suffered from stage 2 symptoms for approximate 36 hours, they progress to stage 3. Patient appears to enter a fugue state akin to sleepwalking when they would normally be asleep. In this fugue state afflicted will attempt to destroy engineering spaces of a starship they are transiting. In this state they are not aggressive necessarily, but will react with extreme aggression to any entity attempting to stop them from destroying vital equipment. The afflicted can be subdued with psi suppressing drugs, entering a temporary medical coma. Patient will be unresponsive while the drugs are active. Once out of jump, the afflicted will recover quickly returning to normal after a period of 24 hours.
