Power Reactors
The Power Reactors of the world all use the same technology that has evolved from the knowledge of all the races since the time of The Rupture. More efficient than the times before the Rifts appeared, the power reactors that supply the cities are not as bad for the environment as it was.
Unlike the power sources of old, the modern reactors harvest magic from the environment and convert it into the elemental magic needed, primarily fire, light, ice and lightning. The rest of the elements are also converted, but not used nearly as much, either due to other services or impracticality.
Unlike pre-rupture times, power supply fees are included in city/town/village taxes, each major city maintains each own area (or county) supply. This proved to be a more effective strategy than before, since the criminal run cities avoided paying anything to a government body, private company or anybody else. When it was decided that a city would run their own power supply and taxes, these running criminal organisations stepped up to the opportunity because they stood to profit from the increase in money flow, reputation and power.
It is odd to think, but cities like Eeriedale (apparantly), Vlamore and Lima are actually sustained by ruling criminals. And they mostly do a good job of it too, since they make sure the criminals pay their taxes.

Each power reactor supplies power to its major city and surrounding area. The power is used for everyday living and luxuries. It is an essential part of living in this age.
Social Impact
The invention of the power reactors led to the invention of other more advanced items. Since the power reactors were the first items that use technology as well as magic, it paved the way for other developments like Holovite and V-Dreams.

Power is available to anyone who is connected to the area power supply.
Complexity
The design of the power reactors is very complicated. It uses intricate mechanics to syphon the magic that flows from the outer realms, much like magic users do. Only specialist engineers can work on the reactors, since a major malfunction could create a mega rift. A mega rift would bring massive destruction in the area.
Discovery
After The Rupture, renown inventor and engineer, Joseph Gallagher, worked as a middleman with the lumin and void races to develop and efficient way to produce power. He used the technology of Void, Lumin and Earth to design the modern day reactors that are still used today.
