The Endeavor Colony

Starting Again

It felt like it took forever. It seemed to be over in an instant. The gravity compensation harness creaked as he shuffled from foot to foot, too nervous to stand still at attention.   Then air from the outside rushed in as the seal gave a squeal of depressurization. It smelled like the greenhouse decks, but... strange. Uneven somehow. Every breath was different- he smelled something oddly sweet, then wet, then earthy, then salty. And the air was perceptibly, but not uncomfortably, thicker.   The door swung away and his eyes took a moment to adjust. It wasn't unbearably bright, just... strange. He was suddenly aware of how blue the light within the ship had always been, and recoiled from the yellowness of the sunshine outside.   Then he could see it. The long, flat plain covered with waving grass. It undulated in the breeze, making waves that mirrored the waves of water beyond on the lake. He was reminded of some of his favorite school tapes, of the footage from the planet of his ancestors.   And something inside him resonated with that image. It felt right, in a way he never realized had never been onboard the Endeavor. The fear of leaving the safety of his home was gone, and he stepped forward.   This was their Eden, their safehaven, their home.

Structure

The colony was run primarily by the officers and crew of the Endeavor, with heavy support from the medical staff. The captain had highest authority, followed shortly by his bridge crew and the medical officers. Lower officers had some power, but orders and mandates from those above them always had priority.

Culture

The Endeavor largely preserved the globalist Earth culture present during the Great Embarkation. It had a similar outlook to life and moral code to Star Trek's Federation, plagued and weakened by the failure of the organization to prevent the death of their world.

Public Agenda

In short, start the world over again and do better, with the knowledge gained from Earth's demise.
  1.     Establish a self-sufficient colony, using the defunct starship as a base of operations.
  2.     Course-correct the damage done to the population by long term spaceflight.
  3. Explore the new world.
  4. Establish new colonies, rinse, repeat.

Assets

The Endeavor, and everything on it.

Disbandment

Unfortunately as the colonists strove to ensure that the next generation (and all subsequent generations) did not suffer the physical detriments of the centuries-long spaceflight, two factions emerged.   Some suggested that they could use their technology to mutate their genes and engineer themselves to be better suited for life on this new world. They could reinforce their skeletal structures, strengthen their eyesight, give themselves thick fur to weather the bitter winters without the safety of the Endeavor's walls. As lines began to be drawn, they called themselves Anagenesites (or Annas the other side called them Mutants.   The other faction found the idea of mutating, even to survive, to be appalling. They recoiled and rejected anything even tangentially related to the idea, and began to see their fellow man as monstrous beasts. They called themselves Purists or The Pure Ones; the other side called them Extinctionists.

Technological Level

Advanced in concept, limited in resources. For example: they had replicator technology and the blueprints to build additional such machines; however the base matter used by these machines was very difficult to manufacture and what was on board had to be used to start the colony. Therefore, they could not in practice print food indefinitely, though they had the technology to.

Agriculture & Industry

Agriculture was quickly established upon planetfall to ensure that the colony could continue to eat. It was organized by the crew of the Endeavor using both seeds preserved from Earth as well as established plant sprouts from the starship's greenhouse decks. Luckily these plants took to the alien soil like a hummingbird to syrup. They grew like weeds, and in odd ways, and kept everyone well fed. Everyone was expected to pitch in to earn their share of the food, even if they could not do much from their gravity support apparatus.   The only other industry to speak of was shelter construction, which largely fell to the second generation once they were reasonably old enough to do it. With stronger bodies born used to the gravity of a planet, this more intense labor was as valued as it was vital. Organized at first by scholars from the Endeavor, then later by foremen whose experience went further than any book learning, a full town was constructed around 30 years following planetfall.

Education

Education was handled by the shipboard computers of the Endeavor, which still held the informational shows used by the generations since the Great Embarkation. In addition to literacy, essential maths, and science, all children were given a truncated "most critical" history of Earth, explaining where the people came from and why they were now en route to somewhere else entirely.   Advanced education was not required, but those who sought to dig deeper into the archives could learn almost anything. A full history of the human race. Chemistry, Biology, and Engineering were all common courses of study for the curious.   Additional educational training was available for those seeking to become members of the crew or medical staff- both always recruiting, as both were always critical to ensure the colony's survival.
