Adamant Wood
Describe a rare organic material and what it's used for in your world.
Adamant wood is the inner wood harvested from adamant trees, all members of the Adamantas genus (Plantae Ginkgophyta Flabelfolia Praevalidae Adamantae Adamantas). Trees belonging to this genus can be identified by their smooth, scaled bark and wide fan-shaped leaves. In the fall, they produce thumbnail-sized fruit with very little flesh surrounding a rock-hard pit, which are inedible to most creatures.
The various species of this tree are adapted to several environments, but all have developed incredibly hard, flame resistant wood as a defense. Cutting these trees requires diamond-toothed saws, a deal of time and not inconsiderable skill. As such, the wood is prized and the uses for each harvest are carefully planned before the undertaking.
The largest boards and occasionally entire lengths of trunk are used for load-bearing beams in vital structures and palaces of the obscenely wealthy. Hospitals, evacuation shelters and temples all have skeletons of adamant wood, where it can be afforded.
For audacious aristocracy, furniture may be carved from adamant, but this extravagence can only be found in the wealthiest houses in the most developed Nations (the Masked Kingdom and Ungul Alliance). These furniture pieces become precious family heirlooms, and are never replaced even if they go badly out of style- their value is great enough to supersede such concerns.
More slender strips, taken from branches, can be used to reinforce a variety of things. Spokes for wheels are expensive, but desirable for all from farmers' carts to aristocrats' carriages. The high price is considered an investment in a wheel that's almost guaranteed not to break. Bows can be stiffened considerably by including an adamant wood lamination layer, but this has to be done sparingly as only the strongest archers can string such a bow. There are folklore heroes who were said to wield bows made entirely of adamant, but the validity of these claims is questionable at best.
Even the smallest twigs are harvested of these mighty trees, as they can be fashioned into long-lasting jewelry that holds intricate carving extremely well over time. Most women on the Garden have at least one piece of adamant jewlery that she keeps for special occasions (like strings of pearls are in our world). The wealthiest women will have jewels set in adamant backing, which has resulted in some dazzling collections of heirloom jewels.
