The Ebony Underground
In certain cities throughout Isturoth, particularly those with sewer networks, there operate branches of an illicit organisation known only as the Ebony Underground. Attended by rich and poor alike, meetings take the form of gladiatorial arenas, in which volunteers willingly enter, in the hope of emerging victorious and rich.
The desperate and needy beg for a chance to fight each other, proving their worth to the rich and powerful that watch them. In the arena, those who live in poverty must demonstrate they have value in their strength and martial prowess. This core value is held by all who operate the Ebony Underground, and is adopted by onlookers from all walks of life.
Their motto is "prove your value", words that tell of how the underclasses are perceived by the ones running the games.
Culture
Within the arena, there are few rules, save for the fact that one's value is proved with strength. Violence and death are commonplace, and those that gather to watch will often revel in it. Bets are placed on fights, making it a fairly lucrative organisation, particularly among the wealthy elite that attend the arena to spectate.
Public Agenda
Publically, the goal of the Ebony Underground is to give the poor, the underprivileged and weak, the chance to prove they have worth through violent fights. If they can hold their own and survive, if they can kill, then they have value and can ascend the ranks and join the upper classes.
The rewards are great for those that fight well and put on a good show. Wealth and glory are bestowed upon survivors, though they are often called back again and again to fight newcomers, to continue to prove their value despite having allegedly done so already.
