Geyser's Kiss

A substance known for its powerful, pungent smell is a mineral deposit called Geyser's Kiss. It's a crystalline mineral that forms around the vents of the geothermal geysers and hot springs scattered across the higher peaks. The mineral is a milky-white, slightly porous crystal that feels slick to the touch, and it is found in shimmering layers, often tinted with pale yellows and greens from the minerals in the water.   The name "Geyser's Kiss" comes from the legend that the geysers are the ancient mountains breathing, and this substance is the condensed and solidified residue of that breath. The pungent smell is a unique combination of volcanic gas, the biting odor of sulfur, and the sterile, ozone-like scent that sometimes accompanies a lightning strike. It is an incredibly acrid and sharp aroma that can be smelled long before the geyser itself is seen, warning of the presence of the hot springs and the inherent danger of the vents.   The uses for Geyser's Kiss are few, but they are vital to the Isturian people:   Natural Pest Control: The fumes from the raw crystals are highly effective at repelling burrowing insects and other small pests that plague the mountain dwellings. A few small pieces placed in a pouch and hung in a storage room are enough to keep it free of vermin.   Primitive Anesthetic: In its raw form, the substance can be crushed into a fine powder and mixed with water to create a paste. When applied to a wound, the pungent fumes can numb the pain, making it a valuable tool for minor surgeries or setting broken bones. However, overuse or direct inhalation of the fumes can cause lightheadedness and disorientation.   Ritualistic Branding: The most potent use of Geyser's Kiss is in a coming-of-age ritual. Young Isturians are sometimes given a small, polished piece of the crystal to carry. The constant, subtle scent of the mineral on their person marks them as one of their village. It is a source of pride, a constant reminder of their harsh but beautiful home, and a smell that they learn to find comforting over time. The intensity of the smell is a measure of the individual's strength and resilience, as they must learn to live with the potent aroma as a part of themselves.
