Black Crown

Also commonly referred to as "Overlord", the Black Crown is the single ruling monarch that governs and oversees all of Kur'Taloth. The kingdom's neighbour to the north, Vašira, has since moved past a monarchy, instead being governed by a council of rulers.   Kur'Taloth, seen as the more traditional of the two mountain kingdoms, has followed the legendary Lord Blackwood and his empire. Overlord Blackwood was sometimes also known as the "Obsidian King" who wore a crown made of volcanic glass, hence the name of the modern-day title. This can be confusing to some outside the borders of the nation, as the monarch no longer wears a crown of black glass, if such a thing ever existed in the first place.

Appointment

In Kur'Taloth, there is a royal family that oversees rulership of the nation. Succession is determined and carried out internally by the family themselves. When it is decided that an individual can no longer rule as Black Crown, they will conduct a ceremony by which the title is passed down to a younger member of the royal family of their choosing. This can also happen in the event of the sudden death of the monarch in power.   If there is a crown, scepter, ring or other object of status, it is physically removed by the one to take the place of the old monarch, purified in embers then water, and finally placed on the body of the new king or queen.

Responsibilities

The Black Crown will have various ministers and administrators that control the various arms of the kingdom, but it is the overlord who will have the final say on all matters. Their power is nearly absolute, metered only by other members of the family. Naturally, this leads to conspiracy and deceit amongst the royals, sometimes resulting in a rather turbulent rule for the citizens of Kur'Taloth.

Accoutrements & Equipment

There is always an artifact carried by the Black Crown that acts as a symbol of their rule and legacy. These items are passed down between rulers, but they can sometimes get lost or destroyed. In these cases, an official proclaimation is made that tells the kingdom of the new artifact that they will continue to use as their icon.   In the past, these have been:
  • Crowns
  • Jewellery
  • Scepters
  • Books
  • Weapons
  • Armour
  • Gemstones
  • An animal at one point, though this predictably did not last more than two generations of ruler

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Members of the royal family over a certain age will be granted a seat at the table, meetings in which the royals discuss matters of governance and rulership over the land, presided over by the Black Crown. If it is decided by a majority that the current Black Crown is no longer fit to rule, a fierce debate will take place over the removal of the current overlord and who should take their place, with many vying for nomination by another (something they cannot do for themselves).
