17 - 11/10/21 : Clockwork Angels
In-game date: 20th of Freyrmond, 3521
“I assure you, Miss Springs, that we are not in the business of murdering the common folk of Revelmoore. Even if we were, the nobility has a monopoly on that already.” - Zelem Corvo
The party made their way down to the Dock Ward to meet with Captain Draen Plavrag and ask questions about the Nimblewrights, trying to see if they could find out anything concerning possible involvement from the Devil's Hand. No one in the party save for Brooke knew of Draen’s true identity as Zelem Corvo.
With Rosie's help, they were able to board the Ambassador's Delight and speak with Zelem face-to-face, sans disguise. Zelem assured the party that they were not in the business of assaulting Revelmoore's citizens, and that if a nimblewright was the culprit, it was made to do so by whoever purchased it.
The party asked if Zelem could provide details on whoever purchased the Nimblewright in question. Zelem agreed to do so only if one of the party was willing to answer a series of questions under the effects of Zone of Truth. Brooke acquiesced and answered Zelem's questions about what they were doing, what they would do once the culprit was found, and why they thought they were caught up in the situation in the first place. Satisfied, Zelem consulted a logbook and informed the party that the nimblewright in question was purchased by Lady Yalah Gralhund, a minor noble in the city that they had previously met at Lady Haventree's gala.
As night fell, the party approached Gralhund Villa and scoped the place out. Reilly was able to detect strong traces of magic from within the villa, and with Megumi in the lead, they proceeded to investigate the villa grounds. They found the yard to be deserted, and discovered the bodies of several Gralhund servants as they proceeded into the house itself. The group's excellent powers of perception tipped them off to voices in the next room, which Reilly recognized as Urstul Floxin.
The party proceeded into the next room with weapons drawn. Urstul Floxin commanded his Scion accomplices to keep the party from going upstairs. Combat ensued, and the party was able to thoroughly trounce the Scion agents and Urstul. However, Urstul disappeared in a flash upon being severely wounded.
With that obstacle surpassed, the party proceeded upstairs. Within, they came across further bloodshed between Gralhund security and Scion thugs. Reilly found the nimblewright within Gralhund's master bedroom, as well as a dying guard. After Reilly dispatched the nimblewright, the party stabilized the guard with healing magic, and he informed them that the scions were after the contents of a safe beneath the bed.
Using her mechanical knowledge, Reilly was able to crack the safe, and within she found a football-shaped greyish-green stone with three recesses in a vertical row, which she immediately knew to be the Stone of Golorr. With the stone in hand, the party had the guard escort the Gralhund's daughters out of the house into safety, while they moved on to the ballroom looking for Lady Gralhund and her bodyguard Hrabbaz.
Within the ballroom, the party located the two in question, but were also surprised by the presence of Veszaltyrr Oussndar and a large, angelic clockwork construct. Veszaltyrr apologized to the party and stated that the destruction was necessary, and gave them an ultimatum; help him recover the stone, and he would spare their lives. Reilly tried to play along and deceive him, hoping to exchange the stone for the captives, which bought them a few seconds. Brooke was able to determine that the Veszaltyrr before them was actually a simulacrum, and with this information Yilani attempted to use Dispel Magic to get rid of him. The spell failed however, leading to combat.
Yilani attempted a second Dispel Magic, but the simulacrum was prepared and used Counterspell to prevent it. A pitched battle began, with Reilly acting to save Yalah and an injured Hrabbaz so that they could escape.
During the fight, Brooke opened a door to the south to seek out Lady Yalah’s husband, but was confronted by another scion agent, further complicating the situation.
The Clockwork Angel withstood great punishment, and was bolstered by the simulacrum's manipulation of the magics of Mechanus. However, it was eventually brought down, leaving only the simulacrum left as flames began to consume the Villa.Portraits
The Red Spirits
Reilly Springs - A young, anxious satyr artificer and inventor, who has fashioned for herself a magic suit of armor that grants her impressive combat capabilities. Now free of the debt that hounded her, Reilly is committed to supporting her friends as she sets down roots in Revelmoore. She has taken to spending time with Fala Lefaliir, the serene gardener and proprietor of Aelbwynn’s Crown. Brooke Acropora - A charming water genasi and a native of Revelmoore, who supports the party with his keen intuition concerning the fanciful and fascinating goings-on of the city. Brooke moonlights as a contributor to The Targe, a broadsheets publication that seeks out the most interesting and sauciest news scoops of the day. Currently, Brooke is focused on ensuring that Troll Skull Manor becomes an unforgettable spectacle to its visitors, but part of his mind continues to be occupied by his tryst with the mysterious Zelem Corvo. Megumi Sakane - A diminutive kitsune rogue and a traveling merchant, who has fallen in with the party during her quest for wealth in the City of Splendors. Kind-hearted but quite avaricious, she uses her small size to her advantage as she sizes up individuals for valuables and wealth. She has revealed to the party that because she made a deal with Asmodeus to save her wife’s soul, she must ritualistically offer 500,000 gold coins to the archdevil by the end of the year, or her soul will be forfeit. She has invented a new persona for herself; the mysterious masked thief, Karma. Yilani Deniz - A severe, perceptive Yuan-ti Pureblood druid who once masqueraded as a human refugee from Khemit in order to gather information on the wealthy and powerful of Revelmoore on behalf of a Yuan-ti cult of Aapep. After coming to love the city and her new friends, Yilani has turned her back on her people and helped to drive them out of the city before their nefarious plans could be enacted. Yilani has resolved to prove the loyalty and dedication of her new self to her friends, and exemplified this in her dream-talk with Veszaltyrr Oussndar. Lackadaisical - More commonly known as “Lacky”, this charming young tiefling woman is the daughter of the famed ex-adventurer Fomalhaut the Financier. She moonlights as a lawyer and represents members of less-than-legal enterprises in Revelmoore, including members of the Black Network. Along with Yilani, Lacky has joined the Black Network, and has also aligned with Solauvaire’s newly named Revelmoore Rangers.Renaer Ambermantle - The estranged son of Dagult Ambermantle, the previous Open Lord of Revelmoore. A skilled fighter, an agent of the Masquerade, and a man of noble standing. Renaer faces scrutiny because of his father’s legacy, but still retains friends in high places. He has befriended the party and spends most of his time fraternizing with them. He was grievously wounded by a fireball aimed at a spy working for his father, but he managed to survive with only burn scars on his face. Violet - A strange purple cat that was purchased by Brooke at the Old Xoblob Shop. For all intents and purposes, she seems to be a completely normal cat; save for the fact that her fur is a deep shade of violet. She told Brooke her story, revealing that she was once a human adventurer that was polymorphed into a purple cat by Halaster Blackcloak, the Mad Mage of the Undermountain. She appears to be more than happy with this situation.
Veszaltyrr Oussndar - The mythic founder of the Black Network, who was thought to have disappeared over three-hundred years ago. An imposing, well-spoken dark elf with a left arm made entirely of brass, he radiates magical might even in visions. The party has discovered that he alone was responsible for the splintering of the modern Black Network, and he now leads the Scions of Black Hearts sub-faction that seeks to return the organization to the old ways. He sent a simulacrum of himself to lead the attack on Gralhund Villa. Zelem Corvo - The well-mannered yet conniving thief lord of the Devil’s Hands thieves guild from Fortune’s Crossing, a town from across the Gulf of Akados. A master of disguise and deception, he is conducting shadowy dealings in Revelmoore to unknown ends. He answered the party’s questions about the runaway nimblewright after they answered his own, leaving his motivations shrouded in mystery. He still seems to retain a degree of fondness for Brooke despite the circumstances of their parting. Rosie the Riveting - The master-of-ceremonies for the Sea Maiden’s Faire, a seafaring variety show that boasts high stakes gambling and thrilling plays. She visited the party at Troll Skull Manor to check the place out and passed on her willingness to help the party meet with the Faire’s “captain” if they needed to. True to her word, she helped the party gain access to the Ambassador’s Delight, the faire’s theater ship. Lyra Arpeggio - A beautiful half-elven woman and a member of the Devil’s Hand thieves guild who acted as a guard during Zelem’s meeting with the party. She was previously seen in the Sea Maiden’s Faire’s production of the Xha’en play, I Want to be Your Canary. Aria de Soto - An effervescent tiefling woman and a member of the Devil’s Hand thieves guild who acted as a guard during Zelem’s meeting with the party. She was previously seen in the Sea Maiden’s Faire’s production of the Xha’en play, I Want to be Your Canary. Urstul Floxin - A grim-faced fire genasi with connections to the Black Network and the Gralhund noble family. He was once one of the Doom Raiders and a close associate of Raeziel Ramrider and Davil Cedarfall. According to Raeziel, he was the one who appeared to lead the secession of the Scions of Black Hearts from the rest of the Black Network, but it is now known that he secretly answers to Veszaltyrr Oussndar. After escaping from the destruction in Troll Skull Alley, he acted as Veszaltyrr’s vanguard in storming Gralhund Villa, but was defeated by the party before being teleported away. Yorn - A half-orc agent of the Scions of Black Hearts, previously encountered by Lackie in the Skewered Dragon. He was found by the party trying to break down the door to Orond Gralhund’s room, and joined the fight to protect Veszaltyrr’s simulacrum. Yalah Gralhund - The lady of House Gralhund. Though technically only a member by marriage to her husband Orond, she is nonetheless the brains of the house’s operations. She was revealed to have purchased the nimblewright implicated in the attack on Troll Skull Alley in order to steal the Stone of Golorr from Dagult Ambermantle’s agent, Dalakhar. When the party found her, she was being confronted by Veszaltyrr’s simulacrum. Hrabbaz - Lady Yalah Gralhund’s bodyguard. He is gruff, soft-spoken, and fiercely defensive of Lady Gralhund. He was found just after his defeat at the hands of Veszaltyrr’s simulacrum barely clinging to life, but was spared and given another chance of escape by the timely intervention of the party. Greta Gralhund - The middle child of Yalah and Orond Gralhund. She was saved by the party, who entrusted her to a Gralhund guardsman who shepherded her and her sister to safety. Zarra Gralhund - The youngest child of Yalah and Orond Gralhund. She was saved by the party, who entrusted her to a Gralhund guardsman who shepherded her and her sister to safety. Mr. Wright - A nimblewright sold by the Sea Maiden’s Faire to Yalah Gralhund, who commanded it to assassinate an agent of Dagult Ambermantle and steal the Stone of Golorr. The nimblewright was successful in its mission, but left a substantial trail that led the party to Gralhund Villa as it was being attacked by the Scions of Black Hearts. Bravely defending its prize to the end, the nimblewright was finally decommissioned by Reilly. Clockwork Angel - An unnerving creature of brass and gears, floating at the side of Veszaltyrr’s simulacrum. Emotionless and imposing, the Angel stood over ten feet tall and possessed a pair of canvas-webbed wings. It was forged from the raw magics of Mechanus and was a fearsome combatant, but was eventually slain by the party’s combined efforts. The Stone of Golorr - A greyish-green ovular stone, about six inches long from end to end, with three empty recesses running vertically down its length. It is covered in a thin layer of ever-present mucus. Although it sports a substantial magical aura, it is currently inert; save for calling out the name of whoever holds it.
