16 - 11/3/21 : Cold Fire

In-game date: 14th-20th of Freyrmond, 3521
“I believe they call it the ‘Rule of Threes’ on the Planes. I guess I’m lucky, hm?” - Renaer Ambermantle
  The party’s plans to give Ember Vel and her wife Panic a pleasant dinner date on the 14th of Freyrmond proceeded without a hitch, with each member of the Red Spirits contributing to their lovely night out. Panic assured her wife that despite her dislike of the city, there were no hard feelings, and she understood the importance that family held for Ember. On the 15th of Freyrmond, Jalester Silvermane arrived, obviously at the end of a long day looking to drown out his sorrows as usual. He asked the party if they had any leads on the Asmodeus Cult, since the Flaming Anvil had taken out another cell in the city. The party attempted to tell Jalester about their suspicions regarding the Cassalanters and their suspected affiliations with Asmodeus, which Jalester tried his best to play off. He cited the difficulty and futility in dealing with nobles, especially those as rich as the Cassalanters, and gave only vague assurances that he would ‘look into it’. Reilly asked if she could look at their findings and identify patterns within the cult's activities; Jalester said that he hadn't the authority to show her this, but would see what he could do after speaking to his superiors.   The 16th saw Arathir Starsong, proprietor of the Balladeer’s Eclipse, enter and congratulate the party on a successful opening. He proposed that the two establishments commit themselves to cordial business relationships now that they were competitors (in two radically different sections of the city, but competitors nonetheless), and that they look into splitting holidays. Arathir proposed that the Balladeer’s Eclipse would continue its annual Fleetswake festivities, allowing Troll Skull Manor to take Zorstide the following month.   To compound on this, Megumi presented Arathir with a business opportunity; with the Balladeer’s Eclipse large adventurer clientele seeking entry to the Undermountain via its prominent well, it was the perfect place for Megumi to set up her extradimensional storefront. Arathir agreed to the deal, seeing profit for both parties involved.   The following day on the 17th of Freyrmond, Lord Nalmo and Lady Malgrace of the halfling noble house Nettlebee arrived to formally offer a distribution contract for their mead at Troll Skull Manor. Their famous locally bottled mead would be sold toTroll Skull Manor at a bulk premium in exchange for some special Nettlebee branding in the bar and the labeling of their mead as the Manor's "official" mead.   After this was agreed to, the Nettlebees left and Fala arrived to blatantly congratulate the party on their opening and playfully banter with the group. They pointed out the greenhouse across the street that they had purchased, and after Reilly gave them seeds preserved from the feywild, Fala gave Reilly an extra key to the greenhouse in case she ever wanted to check on the feywild saplings.   On the 18th of Freyrmond, an unexpected guest arrived; Rosie the Riveting, the Mistress of Ceremonies at the Sea Maiden’s Faire. She arrived to check the place out, and to thank the party for putting up posters for the Sea Maiden's Faire several days prior. She mentioned that if the party ever needed to speak to 'the captain' that she would be able to help arrange such a meeting. Solauvaire teleported into the bar shortly after, also seeking to offer congratulations, and to inform the party that his efforts to seek out the Cult of Asmodeus had thus far been rather fruitless. Rosie unabashedly flirted with him, to which the High Dragon responded positively, if not a bit sheepishly.   The 19th of Freyrmond followed. On a bit of a slow day, Megumi suddenly realized time had stopped. Soon after, Asmodeus himself manifested in the bar and treated himself to a glass of blood as he taunted Megumi about the situation she found herself in. Asmodeus hinted at the predicament of the Cassalanters and his belief that either their or Megumi's contracts with him could be resolved, but not both. He also informed Megumi that he had another surprise for her hidden somewhere in Revelmoore. Megumi responded spitefully, much to Asmodeus' amusement, and he left her with the resounding ominous statement: "Is it getting hot in here?"   Megumi went to the party with this information, and strongly advocated going back to speak to the Cassalanters directly. The party spent a significant time analyzing the situation, weighing the pros and cons of going back to speak to the Cassalanters again. Megumi was eventually talked down out of the idea, and the party decided that if they ever chanced upon the mysterious Stone of Golorr, they would not allow the Cassalanters to have it.   Troll Skull Manor’s first opened tenday concluded on the 20th of Freyrmond, and Renaer arrived for a beer or two on the tavern's off day. He mentioned several things; Bonziel's consideration for membership in the Masquerade as an official double agent in the Xanathar Guild, the fact that he had been contacted by a spy of his father's named Dalakhar with a request to meet at Troll Skull Alley, and that he had found his old training wand from when he was a boy that he wished to give to Jenks. After getting a general idea of where Jenks was, Renaer departed.   After parting ways with the party, Renaer took a moment to bask in the atmosphere of Troll Skull Alley before catching eye of the Rat Catchers. He called Jenks over, but stopped when he caught sight of a glint of flame from one of the nearby rooftops. In a swift motion, Renaer pushed Jenks out of the way and summoned his shield from the Amulet of the War Mage created for him by Reilly, managing to save Jenks' life from a fireball but becoming badly burned himself.   The resulting explosion from the fireball killed several innocent bystanders and two Scion rogues, and also injured a nearby Urstul Floxin. The secondary blast radius flattened nearby plants and shattered most of the windows in the alley, including those of Troll Skull Manor. At the center of the blast was the charred corpse of a gnome, whom the party suspected to be that of Dalakhar, the agent of Renaer's father. Dalakhar's corpse had no remaining identifying features, but was still clutching a bag of 5 valuable gems that Yilani pocketed without onlookers seeing. His hands were also coated with a thin layer of strange mucus that somehow survived the blaze.   The party sprung into action, moving quickly to save Renaer with the aid of Fala, Zug Zug, Lily, and Vowyn. Renaer suffered severe burns on his face, but was able to be placed inside of a Rope Trick while Fala tended to his wounds. Vowyn and Lily helped to comfort a catatonic Jenks, while the rest of the party's investigations turned up several claims from bystanders;
  • The culprit was a mechanical man.
  • The culprit committed the attack with a necklace of fireballs that Squiddly managed to find.
  • The culprit took something from Dalakhar's corpse before fleeing to the rooftops.
  • Megumi was able to see the culprit's general direction towards the western end of the North Ward as he fled, but she couldn't keep up with him once he descended from the rooftops and got lost in the crowds.
Reilly spoke with Urstul Floxin, who claimed he was out on an errand for Lady Yalah Gralhund before being knocked unconscious by the blast. He claimed to not have seen anything else, and only survived because of his fire genasi heritage and the fire resistance it afforded. After being questioned, Urstul disappeared.   The City Watch arrived soon after, with Barnibus Blastwind of the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors leading them into investigation. He briefly questioned the party about what they saw, and the party gave light details but withheld some of the information garnered by their own inquiries.   The party returned to Troll Skull Manor where Fala assured them that Renaer would make a full recovery given time. Renaer, once lucid, tried to keep smiles going with some light jokes, and assured them that he would speak with what spies his father still had in the city about Dalakhar's mission. Remembering the Sea Maiden's Faire's role in distributing Nimblewrights in the city, the Red Spirits decided that their next course of action would be to speak with Zelem Corvo about his possible role in the attack.

Portraits

The Red Spirits

Reilly Springs - A young, anxious satyr artificer and inventor, who has fashioned for herself a magic suit of armor that grants her impressive combat capabilities. Now free of the debt that hounded her, Reilly is committed to supporting her friends as she sets down roots in Revelmoore. She has taken to spending time with Fala Lefaliir, the serene gardener and proprietor of Aelbwynn’s Crown.
Brooke Acropora - A charming water genasi and a native of Revelmoore, who supports the party with his keen intuition concerning the fanciful and fascinating goings-on of the city. Brooke moonlights as a contributor to The Targe, a broadsheets publication that seeks out the most interesting and sauciest news scoops of the day. Currently, Brooke is focused on ensuring that Troll Skull Manor becomes an unforgettable spectacle to its visitors, but part of his mind continues to be occupied by his tryst with the mysterious Zelem Corvo.
Megumi Sakane - A diminutive kitsune rogue and a traveling merchant, who has fallen in with the party during her quest for wealth in the City of Splendors. Kind-hearted but quite avaricious, she uses her small size to her advantage as she sizes up individuals for valuables and wealth. She has revealed to the party that because she made a deal with Asmodeus to save her wife’s soul, she must ritualistically offer 500,000 gold coins to the archdevil by the end of the year, or her soul will be forfeit. She has invented a new persona for herself; the mysterious masked thief, Karma.
Yilani Deniz - A severe, perceptive Yuan-ti Pureblood druid who once masqueraded as a human refugee from Khemit in order to gather information on the wealthy and powerful of Revelmoore on behalf of a Yuan-ti cult of Aapep. After coming to love the city and her new friends, Yilani has turned her back on her people and helped to drive them out of the city before their nefarious plans could be enacted. Yilani has resolved to prove the loyalty and dedication of her new self to her friends, and exemplified this in her dream-talk with Veszaltyrr Oussndar.
Lackadaisical - More commonly known as “Lacky”, this charming young tiefling woman is the daughter of the famed ex-adventurer Fomalhaut the Financier. She moonlights as a lawyer and represents members of less-than-legal enterprises in Revelmoore, including members of the Black Network. Along with Yilani, Lacky has joined the Black Network, and has also aligned with Solauvaire’s newly named Revelmoore Rangers.
Renaer Ambermantle - The estranged son of Dagult Ambermantle, the previous Open Lord of Revelmoore. A skilled fighter, an agent of the Masquerade, and a man of noble standing. Renaer faces scrutiny because of his father’s legacy, but still retains friends in high places. He has befriended the party and spends most of his time fraternizing with them. He was grievously wounded by a fireball aimed at a spy working for his father, but he managed to survive with only burn scars on his face.
Violet - A strange purple cat that was purchased by Brooke at the Old Xoblob Shop. For all intents and purposes, she seems to be a completely normal cat; save for the fact that her fur is a deep shade of violet. She told Brooke her story, revealing that she was once a human adventurer that was polymorphed into a purple cat by Halaster Blackcloak, the Mad Mage of the Undermountain. She appears to be more than happy with this situation. [/hr]
Solauvaire Oussndar - The current archmage of Revelmoore, having assumed the position after his predecessor’s death four years ago. Having revealed the truth about his parentage and the absence of the Fang of Aurniax to the party, it is clear he places much trust in them. He has been keeping an eye on the activities of the local Cult of Asmodeus, but hasn’t been able to follow their movements with reliable accuracy as of yet.
Asmodeus - Dark Prince of the Nine Hells, Dread Tyrant of the Baator Throne, Lord of Lies, et al. The greatest of all archdevils, Asmodeus took personal interest in Megumi’s plight and offered to restore her wife Eula to life in exchange for Megumi’s soul. Still actively watching Megumi’s activities, an avatar of Asmodeus visited her personally during a moment of stopped time and taunted her over the similarities between her plight and that of the Cassalanters, openly wondering who would emerge free of their Baatorian chains. He ominously predicted the fireball that struck Troll Skull Alley, and also warned Megumi that another surprise awaited her somewhere in Revelmoore.
Lif - A poltergeist and the former proprietor of Trollskull Manor. His spirit has remained in the manor, and he has befriended the party during their efforts to restore the tavern into working order. Lif is now serving as the tavern’s bartender and its primary source of ‘atmosphere’. He has achieved his death’s dream of seeing Troll Skull Manor operational once again and happily performs his duties with a spectral smile.
Nat - A mute human girl and the ‘fighter’ of the Rat Catchers, an ‘adventuring party’ made up of three homeless urchins. Nat cannot speak, and communicates through an invented sign language made up of broken Thieves’ Cant symbols and gestures. She is dedicating her time to comforting her friend Jenks.
Jenks - A human boy and the ‘wizard’ of the Rat Catchers. Jenks carries around a stuffed owlbear ‘familiar’ and keeps a bag of ‘spell components’ on his person, and is fiercely protective of his ‘spellbook’. He was nearly struck by the fireball that hit Troll Skull Alley, but Renaer saved his life.
Squiddly - A tiefling boy and the ‘rogue’ of the Rat Catchers, as well as their fearless leader. Squiddly bravely leads his companions out of trouble as often as he leads them into it. Squiddly wears a fake eyepatch, which doesn’t help his aim with his bow. He managed to find and recover the Amulet of Fireballs used in the attack on Troll Skull Alley and handed it off to the party.
“Istrid Horn” - The cover identity of Raeziel Ramrider, who is lying low and posing as a waitress at Troll Skull Manor. A duergar rogue and loan shark, who works as the Doom Raiders’ Master of Coin. She loaned Reilly a sum of gold at an exorbitant interest rate, but the debt has finally been paid off. Now a wanted fugitive thanks to Skeemo Weirdbottle’s betrayal, she is now hiding in Troll Skull manor under an assumed alias. She has learned that her family, which she abandoned years ago, is planning an insurrection against the Xanathar. This revelation has left her conflicted over her pride in her family’s legacy and her oaths to the Black Network.
Bepis Flavorburgh - A boisterous, portly halfling man that worked as a cook before being fired for over-spicing the food. He was saved by the party from a cult of Asmodeus, and is now slated to work as their head chef (taking it easy on the spice this time, of course). By Yilani’s prompting, he served up his signature ‘grand slam’ breakfast for the gang.
Vowyn Marblewander - A studious young gnomish girl, oft accompanied by her ferret familiar, Skittle. She is still getting the hang of doing complicated magic beyond Find Familiar, and has trouble controlling more complicated spells. To pay for her studies at the House of Wonder, she is now working as a waitress at Troll Skull Manor. She is the grand-niece of Xalys Marblewander, former High Dragon of Revelmoore.
Upstanding Gentleman - A kenku with regal bearing and a taste for fine dining and outstanding service. Like all kenku he can only speak in canned phrases, but he seems to have a ready store of canned phrases specifically prepared for the waiting profession. He was formerly employed at Spiggley’s Spaghetti in the city of Darnagal, but was fired for asking for a raise. He now works as a refined waiter at Troll Skull Manor.
Zug Zug - A hulking behemoth of a man, standing at well over 6 and a half feet with the strength to match. Zug is a full-blooded orc, which is a rarity in the civilized lands. He hails from the deserts to Revelmoore’s native, and came to Revelmoore to seek a more peaceful profession after tiring of the bloodshed practiced by his people. He has found work as a manual laborer at Troll Skull Manor, as well as an admirer in Yilani, who pines for him quite openly.
Snarf - An excitable kobold artificer. Cannot speak common, but can understand it more-or-less. Most of his communication takes the form of varying forms of “Meep” or displays of engineering prowess. He possesses a collection of gadgets of varying use; he seems to be less skilled overall than Reilly, but his machines are surprisingly stable. He has been hired for custodial services and repair work at Troll Skull Manor.
Lily Conway - A country gal from out west, specifically the desert town of Fareme in the Stoneheart Valley. She came to the big city to pursue her dream of becoming either a professional racing jockey or a trick rider, but she needs an income in the meantime; she has found employment at Troll Skull Manor as a bouncer, occasional waitress, and a caretaker for Oatley the horse. She is an old neighbor and childhood rival of Edea Lockehart, an adventurer known for her work in the Stoneheart Valley.
Floon Blagmaar - A drinking buddy of Piece of the Puzzle, and a former escort who once worked at a brothel in the Dock Ward. Floon was kidnapped alongside Renaer by the Black Network, and was subsequently abducted by the Xanathar Guild after he was mistaken for Renaer.
Fala Lefaliir - A serene wood elven individual and the owner of Aelbwyn’s Crown, a multifaceted store that functions as a florist, apothecary, and greenhouse. They have befriended the party, especially Reilly, and gladly helps them when asked. To this end, they supplied Reilly with a Draught of Lucid Dreaming, which Reilly hopes to use to influence her impending dream-dialogue with Veszaltyrr Oussndar.
Ember.png
Ember Vel - A fire genasi sorcerer and a member of the Seer’s League, a guild of spellcasters from the Free City of Aspencove in the far north of Frostgale Taiga. A child of two noble lineages, she is in the city with her family to visit her relatives of House Galethon, a noble house of Revelmoore. Though she has renounced her claim as an heir, she still visits her family every year. She and her wife Panic enjoyed a nice dinner date at Troll Skull Manor to get away from the affairs of nobles for a day.
Panikkaria “Panic” Vel - A tiefling more like a moth than a devil, this charming Druid once adventured to save her beloved from a terrible affliction, but now happily resides with her recovered wife as an astrologian and teacher. As the First Seer of the Seer’s League, an order of mages and spellcasters in the Frostgale Taiga, Panic rarely leaves her home of Aspencove; however, she has come to Revelmoore with her family to visit her wife’s noble relatives, as well as to check in on her adoptive father, Rishaal. She and her wife EMber enjoyed a lovely dinner date at Troll Skull Manor to alleviate the tension of city life.
Jalester Silvermane - An agent of the Flaming Anvil, a mobile task force that operates on the behalf of the governments of the Buntesveldt. Jalester is suffering from an overwhelming workload and grief over his partner’s death last year. He asked for the party’s input on the worsening infestation of the Cult of Asmodeus in Revelmoore.
Arathir Starsong - The owner and proprietor of the famous Balladeer’s Eclipse inn and tavern. A retired adventurer, Arathir delights in serving his customers and ensuring their happiness. He agreed with the party to trade off on alternating holidays with their respective taverns, and also allowed Megumi to operate her shop in the vicinity of the famous Eclipse.
Nalmo Nettlebee - Lord of House Nettlebee. This halfling man married into the family and took very well to managing their business practices. He negotiated a contract with the party to sell them Nettlebee Mead at a premium in exchange for branding and promotion.
Malgrace Nettlebee - Lady of House Nettlebee and its current matriarch. Less business minded than her husband, she nonetheless has a keen eye for opportunity and was the one who brought Troll Skull Manor to Nalmo’s attention.
Rosie the Riveting - The master-of-ceremonies for the Sea Maiden’s Faire, a seafaring variety show that boasts high stakes gambling and thrilling plays. She visited the party at Troll Skull Manor to check the place out and passed on her willingness to help the party meet with the Faire’s “captain” if they needed to.
Dalakhar - A spy who worked for Dagult Ambermantle, former Open Lord of Revelmoore. He kept tabs on Renaer through regular contact, but disappeared for a few weeks until requesting a meeting with Renaer at Troll Skull Manor via letter. He was the target of the fireball attack on Troll Skull Alley, and was immediately incinerated when the projectile made direct contact with him. He was carrying several valuable gems, and his hands were coated in a strange mucus.
Urstul Floxin - A grim-faced fire genasi with connections to the Black Network and the Gralhund noble family. He was once one of the Doom Raiders and a close associate of Raeziel Ramrider and Davil Cedarfall. According to Raeziel, he was the one who appeared to lead the secession of the Scions of Black Hearts from the rest of the Black Network, but it is now known that he secretly answers to Veszaltyrr Oussndar. He was caught in the fireball at Troll Skull Alley, but managed to survive thanks to his innate fire resistance.
Talisolvannar “Tally” Fellbranch - Fellbranch - A half-elven carpenter and woodworker who owns the Bent Nail in Trollskull Alley. He was helping Fala with their new greenhouse’s renovations when the fireball struck, and helped the party with whatever he was able to tell them about his recollection of the attack.
Antonia Votanikos - A noblewoman and Lady of House Votanikos, who Reilly and Fala once caught having a romantic rendezvous with her husband in Lady Haventree’s gardens. She was a direct witness of the fireball in Troll Skull Alley, where she was visiting to seek the services of Detective Vincent Trench.
Barnibus Blastwind - A gnomish member of the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors who responded to the fireball attack with the city watch in tow. With his right-hand-man Saeth Cromley, he surveyed the crime scene and questioned the party on what they saw.
Saeth Cromley - A human member of the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors who serves as Barnibus Blastwind’s right-hand-man and bodyguard.
