"Did you try the tuning fork?"
  • Reilly Springs

  •   Exhausted from their confrontations with Zegrod and Azrok, the party made their way back to the Undermountain entrance in Ramrider's Retreat. To prevent her from being harmed by the teleportation circle, the party had a mage on-duty in Revelmoore castle teleport in to brand Hilda and allow her passage.   The party chose to report to Renaer immediately at Ilvastarr Palace where he was in a meeting with Izerna Sundever and Vesper. They gave him the rundown about everything that had happened, sparing no detail. Rebaer had some misgivings about the alliance between Azrok's Legion and the Xanathar Syndicate, since he feared Raeziel having access to more potent forces than she already did, but accepted that it was the price of saving Volaire Evermere's life.   Upon explaining the cognitohazard that was knowing Aezora's name and her imprisonment in the luck blade that had been his predecessor's badge of office, Renaer grew somewhat angry; he speculated that his father Dagult Ambermantle must have used the The Stone of Golorr to erase the memory of this fact, increasing the potency of the cognitohazard. He surmised that his father likely did so to have the option to cause havoc in Revelmoore after his dismissal, and became further assured of the new King of Oceanus' involvement.   The party also introduced Renaer to Hilda, who took a shine to the Open Lord immediately. As they spoke, Vesper leaned against one of the far walls and remained quiet. Her eyes rested on the katana on Renaer's belt, a katana that Hilda found very interesting. However, Oz and Sin could see that it clearly caused Vesper some pain to look at. Renaer moved on to the reason he was meeting with Izerna and Vesper; they had decided to suspect Halaster as a possible suspect in allowing the drow through the Undermountain in such large numbers, since he had total control over the dungeon.   Renaer admitted that they had to consider Halaster a suspect in allowing the drow into the Undermountain in such large numbers. He asked the party to use the Mad Mage's interest in them to investigate this possibility, for he badly wished it not to be the case. If it were, it would mean Halaster openly assisted in an attack on Revelmoore, and Renaer did not want to find out what war with Halaster would entail.   Regarding Hilda, Renaer suggested that they see his close friend Reilly at her workshop, the Spring of Creation. Luckily, the party was quite familiar with Reilly, and decided to visit her in the morning after resting for the night.   The party traveled to the Balladeer's Eclipse, where they held a meeting before bed. At Ozwik's recommendation, they spoke about how Aezora had tempted each of them (avoiding using her name so as to not affect Vesper with the cognitohazard). Oz spoke of his dream of living with both of his parents in a kinder world, Sin talked about her vision of success and open acceptance from the people of Revelmoore, and Edea talked about wanting to find what was so important to make her mother leave her as an infant.   The party also discussed Sin's background, and her unfamiliarity with drow society despite her being affected by prejudice against her people. Vesper comiserated with the way drow were viewed, having been thoroughly inundated in their culture during her time as a priestess of Lolth. Vesper, unlike the others, was much more reticent to speak of her past, citing her previous party's insistent curiosity as a reason to remain a bit tight-lipped.   Sin returned to her home for the night while the others retired for the night; Oz, Edea, and Vesper in beds, and Hilda in a fancy salad bowl provided by Arathir.   The party visited the Spring of Creation the next morning. Reilly was excited to see them, particularly Edea, and was introduced to Sinelthriandra. She also inquired if Vesper was going to take her up on the offer of taking her arm in the tradition of fey-retribution, which Vesper once again declined.   Finally Reilly was introduced to Hilda, and the question of her planar origins was broached. Reilly's immediate question was "did you try the tuning fork?", referring to the test Edea had already performed. With something more accurate required, Reilly had her secretary Vex power up a centrifuge in her workshop, which Hilda was shuffled into. As Hilda was jostled and spun about in the centrifuge, a helpful pixie by the name of Dot Matrix encoded the results onto a piece of paper, which was then given top Reilly.   After reviewing the results, Reilly concluded the following:
    • Hilda wasn't a fiend, but was apparently made of some sort of sentient fiendish substance; possibly demon ichor.
    • After consulting a catalog of known abyss layers, Reilly found that Hilda pointed to layer 571: Desposyni.
    • Desposyni was a realm adjacent to Shendilavri, home layer of Malcanthet, Demon Queen of the Succubi.
    • Desposyni is said to be a twisted realm of hedonistic delights; a pleasure chamber for some, and a house of torture for others. It is said to be the place where one's deepest dreams come true, at the cost of one's very soul.
Desposyni being a repository of stolen souls led Reilly to the hypothesis that Hilda was a soul made physically manifest through abyssal substance. Not a fiend, but made of parts of Desposyni itself.   The party was a bit unnerved by Hilda's connection to Aezora given this revelation, but were already assured that she meant them no harm and could easily have brought them to ruin if she had intended to already.   With their business concluded, the party departed the Spring and made their way to the castle to continue their expedition. They pushed to the fourth level of the Undermountain, where the Mad Mage was waiting for them.   Halaster explained that he was renovating the fourth level from its boring older function as a food cultivation grounds, and was experimenting with some new 'attractions'; including a "Hall of History", a "Tunnel of Dark Backstory Revealing", and a 'live', 'bone rattling band'.   Ozwik took the opportunity to question Halaster about the drow, to which Halaster expressed annoyance. He denied letting the drow into the Undermountain, as he was far too busy with other projects and threats to his rule further down into the dungeon. After this, he bade the party to continue and vanished.   Party advanced and found the renowned author, Piece of the Puzzle, tied up and guarded by a strange skeletal band that Halaster introduced as Anbonio, Boneardo, and Estebone; the Los Bonely Boys!   The Los Bonely Boys began their grim dance of death, summoning other skeletons to groove along with their sadistic samba. The battle began, with the party attempting to save Puzzle from his cadaverous captors!

    Portraits

    HALASTER BLACKCLOAK

The Mad Mage of the Undermountain, and one of the most powerful spellcasters in all of Lloegyr. This legendarily insane wizard has near-control over the great dungeon that he has claimed as his home, and is able to shape it and influence its residents to his will.   Halaster seems to be struggling with managing his dungeon in the face of the onslaught of powerful visitors; most pressing of these being the powerful succubus Aezora.

    THE FAIRHILL FOUR & CO.

Ozwik Irontusk - A half-orc warrior who draws power from the stones of the earth. Ozwik acts as the leader of the Fairhill Four, though he always leaves important decisions up to a vote. He strives to be the voice of reason among his party during their adventures, keeping them on-task and down-to-earth. A former soldier, Ozwik is quite stern and direct, though he has an undeniably kind heart.
Hilda Goorimm - A strange plasmoid in the shape of a short elf girl. She has lost her memories and has found herself in the Undermountain, without cause or creed to follow. Capable of assuming the shape of deadly animals, she is an unexpected force to be reckoned with. She exudes warmth from her body, and she has an inquisitive personality. She has a tendency to finish her sentences with the word 'ne', an odd vocal tic.   Reilly Springs' investigations have revealed that Hilda is a physical soul taking the form of her former body, molding a form out of some fiendish substance similar to demon ichor.
Sinelthriandra Thunderkeg - A dark elf agent of the Masquerade, paladin of Moccavallo, and adopted daughter of Warden Barik Thunderkeg of Revelmoore. She takes her duty to the city very seriously and rarely leaves time for humor. She has taken it upon herself to solve the murder of Open Lord Reverie, and to prove to the people of her home that not all drow blindly follow the ways of Lolth.
Edea Lockehart - A half-elven gunslinger and artificer from Fareme, a desert-border town in the Stoneheart Valley. Optimistic and cheerful, she chose the path of the adventurer to help others and to prove herself capable of standing on her own two feet. She seeks any information on her mother, who abandoned her and her father when she was a newborn. Edea is a peerless shot with her revolver Pearl and possesses inhuman reflexes.
Vesper DeVir - A dark elf paladin, Knight of the Rose in training, and member of the Moonlighters. She is a chosen of Desna, and seeks to liberate her people from the oppressive grasp of Lolth. While her close companions Contrast and Makoto seek their own inquiries into the murder of Reverie Ilvastarr, she volunteered to venture into the Undermountain and learn more about the movements of Uyen Asari. She has been rescued from the drow of House Arkhenneld, and has lent her blade to their mission.
Nella - An adolescent lesser manticore who was adopted by the Fairhill Four early into their adventuring career after they slew her parents. She is magically bonded to Ozwik and serves as his animal companion. Although she is outwardly aggressive, she is unflinchingly loyal to her master and his companions.

    NON-PLAYER CHARACTERS

Open Lord Renaer Ambermantle - Hero of the Dragon Heist, Veteran of the Usurper's Gambit, Heir to the Throne of Oceanus, and newly elected Open Lord of Revelmoore. Renaer has faced many hardships at the hand of his insidious father, King Dagult of Oceanus, and has risen above the flames of grief to protect his home and those he loves.
Ser Izerna Sundever - Third eldest of the Sundever noble family's children. A knight of the Order of the Rose like her father, Izerna is the picture of knightly honor and duty, and perceives most things through this lens. Her apprentice and squire is Vesper DeVir, chosen of Desna, who often accompanies Izerna's youngest brother Contrast.
Volaire Evermere - An agent of the Masquerade that serves Open Lord Renaer Ambermantle. He was rescued from the Xanathar's clutches after the party dealt with the hobgoblin legions.
Aezora the Succubus - Daughter of Malcanthet, Aezora is an uncommonly powerful succubus who possesses the power to grant wishes... at a price. She was confined in the Luck Blade that served as the badge of office for the Open Lord of Revelmoore; a fact that had been curiously forgotten by many, including the Council of Lords themselves.   She tempted Yzzan, the barbarian of the Fairhill Four, to her embrace, and the party has yet to find their friend. She lurks deeper within the Undermountain, watching and waiting...
Arathir Starsong - Proprietor and owner of the Balladeer's Eclipse, Revelmoore's premier tavern and the home of the most-traveled route to the Undermountain. A retired adventurer, he has had his fair share of escapades and brushes with death. Although he would rather no adventurers descend and lose their lives in the dungeon below, he knows he cannot stop them, and so he plays the part of a warden, denying access to those who cannot fund their passage and giving kind advice to those who can.
Reilly Springs - A satyr artificer, and one of the famous Red Spirits that played a central role in the Grand Game known as the Dragon Heist. She has stepped back from adventuring and now runs the Spring of Creation, a workshop where those of magical talents and inventive minds can practice their arts in a safe environment.   During the final days of the Dragon Heist, she killed the fire genasi Scion, Urstul Floxin, with whom Vesper was deeply in love. The two women have since made their amends and are on friendly, if somewhat distant, terms. She is a close friend of Edea, who taught a younger Reilly the basics of the artificer's trade.
Vex - A nervous goblin woman who is training to take over as the receptionist for the Spring of Creation. She possesses remarkable mechanical knowledge, and is capable of handling firearms with expert precision and care. Ordinarily quite nervous, she seems to be getting better at her job.
The Los Bonely Boys - A trio of skeletal musicians who use their music to cast deadly charms and enchant the bones of the fallen. From left to right, they are Anbonio, Boneardo, and Estebone. They are creations of Halaster the Mad Mage, who gleefully joins the dancing skeletons that the band summons.
