“This vision serves a noble goal. The redemption of the Underdark. The unification of competing forces. The destruction of chaos. Unfortunately, it is an endeavor built upon a lattice of corpses. Betrayal. Untold horrors. Do you understand?” - Veszaltyrr Oussndar
Reilly’s conversation with Veszaltyrr came to pass just as the sorcerer of eld desired. The two compared philosophies and the reasoning behind Veszaltyrr’s beliefs that he and the party were destined to come into conflict. During these talks, Veszaltyrr revealed several important pieces of information.
The first was the revelation of Veszaltyrr’s ultimate goal; he believed the Underdark to be an untapped paradise gripped by chaos and malice, and that it was in need of taming to reach its full potential. He wished to use the magics of Mechanus, as well as Revelmoore’s wealth and its abundance of influential citizens wishing to ‘liberate’ the Undermountain from its criminal inhabitants, to stage a transformation of the Undermountain and eventually all of the Underdark. His vision called for the chaotic wasteland to become an ordered, static paradise of metal and crystal.
The second was Veszaltyrr’s possession of a powerful artifact known as the Heart of Cygnus. This brass sphere, which seemed to warp reality around it slightly into more ordered patterns, was stolen by Veszaltyrr from one of the massive cogs of Mechanus. This theft caused all of Mechanus to briefly fall into disarray as the cog Cygnus ceased its rotation, and this chaos was solved by ejecting Cygnus from Mechanus and causing it to drift through the planes. The Heart itself, categorized as Cygnus X-1 by the native Modrons of Mechanus, granted Veszaltyrr potent spellcasting powers and control over the logical energies of Mechanus.
Veszlatyrr explained to Reilly that to achieve his goals, Revelmoore’s citizens and others that he would exploit would have to suffer. This was something he regretted, but had long since accepted. His talks with the party served to help humanize those he planned against in his eyes, so that he would not forget the gravity of his own actions.
Reilly counteracted Veszaltyrr’s views with a speech of her own, using images of her friends and other individuals she had come to know during her journeys in the Prime Material:
“I didn’t fit in while in the Feywild, sure, but it’s still a part of me. People don’t always understand why fey do what we do, but it makes sense to me, it’s like clockwork, but the gears are always changing. But if you look close enough, you understand the changes, even if you can’t predict them. And I still don’t always understand Revelmoore, but I’m learning how these gears work too.
“You can’t change the gears however you see fit, trying to force them into place is just gonna make it worse. But sometimes pieces just fit naturally, sometimes a piece you didn’t expect helps things move along, and sometimes the pieces shift and fit better than they did before. It’s just like home, always changing, but it’s a beautiful change when you really look at it.
“I think that you’re a misguided old man who doesn’t actually know what he’s doing. You think you can use people like tools, but people can surprise you. You never gave Solauvaire the chance to grow on his own, but Galder did. And thanks to that, your plans for him failed.
“I had someone similar to teach me. My magic’s fey, it doesn’t work quite the same, but channeling it through machinery takes tinkering. Edea let me practice my own way, even if it’s not how she did things. And they blew up in my face more than I’d like to admit, but she never let me get discouraged. I don’t think I’d be here now if I didn’t have someone like her teaching me. I certainly wouldn’t if I had someone like you in my life. And you’ll always end up alone and with nothing, as long as you think your way is the only one.”
Reilly attempted to use the mental acuity afforded to her by Fala’s Draught of Lucid Dreaming to end the dream on that note, but was only barely overpowered by Veszaltyrr’s sheer mental fortitude. The resulting clash altered the dreamscape to show scenes from Reilly's home in the feywild, as well as a trio of towers in Revelmoore.
Veszaltyrr was gladdened to know Reilly felt as strongly as she did about forcing cogs to fit, and was even moved to shed a tear. He told her that he was convinced that he was right, but would cherish the opportunity to be proven wrong. He ended his sentiments by stating his resolve to kill one to save many, and allowed the “Little Doe” to leave the dream.
Reilly awoke with one of her usual nervous fits of hyperventilation before meeting with the party to discuss the dream with them. They were able to figure out that the trio of towers Reilly saw in the dream was Maleficarius Towers, a wizard’s residence in the Southern Ward of Revelmoore that had been built years ago under apparently dubious circumstances. Assuming this to be Veszaltyrr’s residence, they attempted to use the Bloodstone infused with Solauvaire’s blood. However, the bloodstone instead pointed outwards from Revelmoore to the west, going on for hundreds of miles before going straight down below the surface.
Assuming this meant Veszaltyrr was far away from Revelmoore, the party moved on to their next task; meeting with the noble family Cassalanter as suggested by Rishaal the Page-Turner in order to learn more about the abolethic word ‘Golorr’. The party was greeted at the door by Elzerina and Tirenzio Cassalanter, the twin children of Lord and Lady Cassalanter, and the two pestered the adventurers briefly. Megumi felt a deep, familiar discomfort upon setting eyes on the twins, and this feeling did not depart when they were urged to go play by their mother.
Amalia Cassalanter greeted the party and invited them to speak with her in her butterfly garden, where she intended to vet them before they could speak to her husband. She afforded a gaze and a wistful sigh as she watched her children play, which the more perceptive members of the party realized was a well-concealed attempt to elicit sympathy from some unknown plight.
The party then met with Victoro, who recognized the name Golorr to mean 'Learner' in Abolethic, and referred to its usage in an ancient parable about an aboleth with an insatiable hunger for knowledge. Victoro, realizing the party was pursuing the same thing he was, revealed to the party that their childrens' souls had been taken by a local cult of Asmodeus, and that they were tasked with paying the cult 500,000 gold coins in return for them; a sum not even the wealthy Cassalanters could muster.
Victoro sought the Stone of Golorr for its property of Primacy; it was an artifact so old that it predated the current laws of magic, and could be used to overpower such a hold over his children. The party doubted his story, with Megumi even directly accusing them of selling their children's souls themselves, and after an angry rebuttal from Victoro, they parted on poor terms..
Back at Troll Skull Manor, the party agreed that the Cassalanters were suspicious, but they would still try to help the twins on their own terms if they could. In the meantime, they turned in early to prepare for the Grand Opening on the 10th of Freyrmond. Megumi deviously roped Fala Lefaliir along to help Reilly purchase an outfit for the occasion, trying to help along the budding romance between the two.
Yilani coquettishly invited Zug Zug to accompany her to the markets to also purchase an outfit, saying that she would appreciate the protection and deterrence afforded by such a large individual like himself. Zug Zug, somewhat confused, went along with the request and offered Yilani his arm, leading her to a Khemitian clothing merchant for the occasion.
On the 10th of Freyrmond, the staff arrived just ahead of a gathered crowd, with promotion being handled by the Rat Catchers and Reilly’s casting of Skywrite. Brooke addressed the crowd, playing up the tavern's haunted angle before declaring the establishment open.
The opening proceeded without a hitch, save for a few interesting developments. While the party was distracted by their individual duties, they discovered that a horse had somehow entered the tavern while their backs were turned; a fact that seemed to not bother anyone in the place. Yilani used her druidic magics to speak to the beast, learning that his name was Oatley and that he loved oats beyond all things. Yilani had Zug Zug provide Oatley with a barrel of oats, thus cementing Troll Skull Manor’s adoption of an equine mascot.
Spite Maleficarius at one point tried to loudly burn the manor down; however, he was detected by virtually everyone in the establishment. Megumi, in her Karma persona, gave the Rat Catchers knives and had them chase Spite away. Meanwhile, Brooke stopped Mattrim “Threestings” Merreg from ruining the evening with his usual brand of musical ‘uniqueness’, and encouraged him to pick up the flute instead. Yilani expertly deflected a disgruntled customer bemoaning the loudness in comparison to the North Ward’s quiet nature, and the evening proceeded without any further complications.
The days began to pass quickly with so much to occupy the party. Their second day of operation, the 11th of Freyrmond, saw Esvele Rosznar give Brooke his promised interview with her persona the Black Viper, and the two agreed to set up a system to allow those in need to contact the Black Viper via a dead drop near the Skewered Dragon tavern in the Dock Ward.
Their third day of operation, the 12th of Freyrmond, saw Spite Maleficarius show up with a "peace offering” in the form of a six pack of bottled beers, which Yilani saw were very obviously poisoned. Relying on her poison immunity, Yilani dared Spite to drink one along with her, and after some protest, Spite shakingly relented and drank one of them. He quickly collapsed as the poison ravaged his insides, and after Yilani used healing word to save him from further damage, Spite retreated.
The fourth day of operation, the 13th of Freyrmond, saw Ember Vel arrive and ask for assistance in setting up a date with her wife Panic, as a way to make up for Panic having to spend time in the city. The party, already acquainted with Panic, agreed to help set the mood on the night of the 14th.Portraits
The Red Spirits
Reilly Springs - A young, anxious satyr artificer and inventor, who has fashioned for herself a magic suit of armor that grants her impressive combat capabilities. Now free of the debt that hounded her, Reilly is committed to supporting her friends as she sets down roots in Revelmoore. She has taken to spending time with Fala Lefaliir, the serene gardener and proprietor of Aelbwynn’s Crown. Against her nervous nature, Reilly emerged unscathed in a verbal debate with Veszaltyrr Oussndar. Brooke Acropora - A charming water genasi and a native of Revelmoore, who supports the party with his keen intuition concerning the fanciful and fascinating goings-on of the city. Brooke moonlights as a contributor to The Targe, a broadsheets publication that seeks out the most interesting and sauciest news scoops of the day. Currently, Brooke is focused on ensuring that Troll Skull Manor becomes an unforgettable spectacle to its visitors, but part of his mind continues to be occupied by his tryst with the mysterious Zelem Corvo. Megumi Sakane - A diminutive kitsune rogue and a traveling merchant, who has fallen in with the party during her quest for wealth in the City of Splendors. Kind-hearted but quite avaricious, she uses her small size to her advantage as she sizes up individuals for valuables and wealth. She has revealed to the party that because she made a deal with Asmodeus to save her wife’s soul, she must ritualistically offer 500,000 gold coins to the archdevil by the end of the year, or her soul will be forfeit. She has invented a new persona for herself; the mysterious masked thief, Karma. Yilani Deniz - A severe, perceptive Yuan-ti Pureblood druid who once masqueraded as a human refugee from Khemit in order to gather information on the wealthy and powerful of Revelmoore on behalf of a Yuan-ti cult of Aapep. After coming to love the city and her new friends, Yilani has turned her back on her people and helped to drive them out of the city before their nefarious plans could be enacted. Yilani has resolved to prove the loyalty and dedication of her new self to her friends, and exemplified this in her dream-talk with Veszaltyrr Oussndar. Lackadaisical - More commonly known as “Lacky”, this charming young tiefling woman is the daughter of the famed ex-adventurer Fomalhaut the Financier. She moonlights as a lawyer and represents members of less-than-legal enterprises in Revelmoore, including members of the Black Network. Along with Yilani, Lacky has joined the Black Network, and has also aligned with Solauvaire’s newly named Revelmoore Rangers.Renaer Ambermantle - The estranged son of Dagult Ambermantle, the previous Open Lord of Revelmoore. A skilled fighter and a man of noble standing, Renaer has expressed his fondness of the party and his desire to continue his association with them. Despite facing almost universal distrust from the city’s nobility, he has a few friends in high places. Following his second rescue by the party, he has decided to remain close by their side. Violet - A strange purple cat that was purchased by Brooke at the Old Xoblob Shop. For all intents and purposes, she seems to be a completely normal cat; save for the fact that her fur is a deep shade of violet. She told Brooke her story, revealing that she was once a human adventurer that was polymorphed into a purple cat by Halaster Blackcloak, the Mad Mage of the Undermountain. She appears to be more than happy with this situation.
Veszaltyrr Oussndar - The mythic founder of the Black Network, who was thought to have disappeared over three-hundred years ago. An imposing, well-spoken dark elf with a left arm made entirely of brass, he radiates magical might even in visions. The party has discovered that he alone was responsible for the splintering of the modern Black Network, and he now leads the Scions of Black Hearts sub-faction that seeks to return the organization to the old ways. During his dream conversation, he revealed his ultimate goal to use the planar magics of Mechanus and the wealth of Revelmoore to transform the Underdark from a chaotic wasteland to an orderly paradise, starting with the Undermountain. He also spoke of the Heart of Cygnus, an artifact that he stole from a cog of Mechanus of the same name, which he uses to power his clockwork magics. Victoro Cassalanter - The Half-elven Lord of House Cassalanter, one of Revelmoore’s founding houses and most influential families. A well-known and respected citizen, he and his wife were invited as guests of honor to the gala at Ulbrinter Villa. He is a successful shipping magnate and investor, who turned the failing finances inherited from his father into success and riches in little over a decade. He is a studier of aboleths as a hobby, and was able to relay to the party the meaning of the word ‘Golorr’ as well as a parable associated with it. Afterwards, he asked for their help in finding the Stone of Golorr, believing it to be the key to ending the Cult of Asmodeus’ hold over his children’s souls. Amalia Cassalanter - The human wife of Lord Victoro Cassalanter and the mother of their two twin children, Elzerina and Tirenzio. Beloved among her peers as a generous philanthropist who regularly distributes food and clothing to the needy, she is also a respected lepidopterist that boasts a beautiful garden full of butterflies at her villa. Before marrying Victoro, she lived in and grew up in Endhome. She vetted the party before allowing them to speak to her husband, and the party realized she was a skilled manipulator using their children to inspire sympathy for the plight they would eventually spring upon the party. Lif - A poltergeist and the former proprietor of Trollskull Manor. His spirit has remained in the manor, and he has befriended the party during their efforts to restore the tavern into working order. Lif is now serving as the tavern’s bartender and its primary source of ‘atmosphere’. He has achieved his death’s dream of seeing Troll Skull Manor operational once again and happily performs his duties with a spectral smile. Nat - A mute human girl and the ‘fighter’ of the Rat Catchers, an ‘adventuring party’ made up of three homeless urchins. Nat cannot speak, and communicates through an invented sign language made up of broken Thieves’ Cant symbols and gestures. Her companions proudly announced their defeat of the shark Obliteros to the very bewildered party. Jenks - A human boy and the ‘wizard’ of the Rat Catchers. Jenks carries around a stuffed owlbear ‘familiar’ and keeps a bag of ‘spell components’ on his person, and is fiercely protective of his ‘spellbook’. He and his companions proudly announced their defeat of the shark Obliteros to the very bewildered party. Squiddly - A tiefling boy and the ‘rogue’ of the Rat Catchers, as well as their fearless leader. Squiddly bravely leads his companions out of trouble as often as he leads them into it. Squiddly wears a fake eyepatch, which doesn’t help his aim with his bow. He and his companions proudly announced their defeat of the shark Obliteros to the very bewildered party. Piece of the Puzzle - A “world famous” tabaxi “author” and “wizard” who has traveled the world and miraculously survived to pen many tales and guides to all sorts of subjects. He has returned to Revelmoore following a suspiciously short book tour, and is once again hovering around the party and their adventures. His current literary subject is Mr. Bepis Flavorburgh, a halfling chef who will soon be working as the head chef for Troll Skull Manor. “Istrid Horn” - The cover identity of Raeziel Ramrider, who is lying low and posing as a waitress at Troll Skull Manor. A duergar rogue and loan shark, who works as the Doom Raiders’ Master of Coin. She loaned Reilly a sum of gold at an exorbitant interest rate, but the debt has finally been paid off. Now a wanted fugitive thanks to Skeemo Weirdbottle’s betrayal, she is now hiding in Troll Skull manor under an assumed alias. She has learned that her family, which she abandoned years ago, is planning an insurrection against the Xanathar. This revelation has left her conflicted over her pride in her family’s legacy and her oaths to the Black Network. Bepis Flavorburgh - A boisterous, portly halfling man that worked as a cook before being fired for over-spicing the food. He was saved by the party from a cult of Asmodeus, and is now slated to work as their head chef (taking it easy on the spice this time, of course). By Yilani’s prompting, he served up his signature ‘grand slam’ breakfast for the gang. Vowyn Marblewander - A studious young gnomish girl, oft accompanied by her ferret familiar, Skittle. She is still getting the hang of doing complicated magic beyond Find Familiar, and has trouble controlling more complicated spells. To pay for her studies at the House of Wonder, she is now working as a waitress at Troll Skull Manor. She is the grand-niece of Xalys Marblewander, former High Dragon of Revelmoore. Upstanding Gentleman - A kenku with regal bearing and a taste for fine dining and outstanding service. Like all kenku he can only speak in canned phrases, but he seems to have a ready store of canned phrases specifically prepared for the waiting profession. He was formerly employed at Spiggley’s Spaghetti in the city of Darnagal, but was fired for asking for a raise. He now works as a refined waiter at Troll Skull Manor. Zug Zug - A hulking behemoth of a man, standing at well over 6 and a half feet with the strength to match. Zug is a full-blooded orc, which is a rarity in the civilized lands. He hails from the deserts to Revelmoore’s native, and came to Revelmoore to seek a more peaceful profession after tiring of the bloodshed practiced by his people. He has found work as a manual laborer at Troll Skull Manor, as well as an admirer in Yilani. Snarf - An excitable kobold artificer. Cannot speak common, but can understand it more-or-less. Most of his communication takes the form of varying forms of “Meep” or displays of engineering prowess. He possesses a collection of gadgets of varying use; he seems to be less skilled overall than Reilly, but his machines are surprisingly stable. He has been hired for custodial services and repair work at Troll Skull Manor. Lily Conway - A country gal from out west, specifically the desert town of Fareme in the Stoneheart Valley. She came to the big city to pursue her dream of becoming either a professional racing jockey or a trick rider, but she needs an income in the meantime; she has found employment at Troll Skull Manor as a bouncer, occasional waitress, and a caretaker for Oatley the horse. She is an old neighbor and childhood rival of Edea Lockehart, an adventurer known for her work in the Stoneheart Valley. Floon Blagmaar - A drinking buddy of Piece of the Puzzle, and a former escort who once worked at a brothel in the Dock Ward. Floon was kidnapped alongside Renaer by the Black Network, and was subsequently abducted by the Xanathar Guild after he was mistaken for Renaer. Fala Lefaliir - A serene wood elven individual and the owner of Aelbwyn’s Crown, a multifaceted store that functions as a florist, apothecary, and greenhouse. They have befriended the party, especially Reilly, and gladly helps them when asked. To this end, they supplied Reilly with a Draught of Lucid Dreaming, which Reilly hopes to use to influence her impending dream-dialogue with Veszaltyrr Oussndar. Elzerina Cassalanter - One of the Cassalanter twins. She and her brother Tirenzio greeted the Red Spirits as they arrived at Cassalanter Villa, though the party deduced that they were setpieces used by their parents to garner sympathy for their plight. According to their parents, Elzerina and Tirenzio’s souls are held hostage by the local cult of Asmodeus, set to be offered up to Asmodeus himself on the date of the twins’ 9th birthday: the 30th of Freyrmond. Tirenzio Cassalanter - One of the Cassalanter twins. He and his sister Elzerina greeted the Red Spirits as they arrived at Cassalanter Villa, though the party deduced that they were setpieces used by their parents to garner sympathy for their plight. According to their parents, Elzerina and Tirenzio’s souls are held hostage by the local cult of Asmodeus, set to be offered up to Asmodeus himself on the date of the twins’ 9th birthday: the 30th of Freyrmond. Willifort Crowelle - The majordomo of Cassalanter Villa, Willifort manages the affairs of the house and tends to his master Victoro’s needs and requests. He guided the party out of the villa after the end of their conversations with Victoro and Amalia. Laiba “Nana” Rosse - An elderly tiefling woman and the nanny to the Cassalanter twins. She walks with the assistance of a cane and seems almost a bit too slow for the energetic twins. Spite Maleficarius - A comically evil tiefling man. Working at the tavern appears to be his way of establishing a cover story to lay low from the law. He seems convinced that others have not caught on to his overt malicious plotting. Now an employee of Emmek Frewn’s Taphouse, he has failed in several attempts to sabotage Troll Skull Manor. He has a habit of monologuing and cackling evilly, which he insists is because of a ‘condition’. The knife-sharpening thing is just a hobby of his. Mattrim “Threestrings” Merreg - A peculiar halfling minstrel that performs on a “unique” (damaged) lute that only possesses three strings. He seems oblivious to the dissonant tones of his beloved instrument, and believes that making music in spite of such setbacks is a great triumph of art. He is an agent of the Masquerade, and frequents taverns to gather information. Esvele Rosznar - The true identity of the Black Viper. A young noblewoman frustrated with the prospect of inheriting a family business she cares nothing for, she has adopted the role of the Black Viper to instead do something she feels that matters; to be a hero for the citizens of the Dock Ward of Revelmoore. In exchange for her rescue from the cult of Asmodeus, she treated Brooke to an interview as the Black Viper for the Targe. Ember Vel - A fire genasi sorcerer and a member of the Seer’s League, a guild of spellcasters from the Free City of Aspencove in the far north of Frostgale Taiga. A child of two noble lineages, she is in the city with her family to visit her relatives of House Galethon, a noble house of Revelmoore. Though she has renounced her claim as an heir, she still visits her family every year. She spoke to the party and asked for their help in preparing a date night for her wife Panic, who resents visiting the big city. Oatley - Oatley is a good boy who enjoys parties and oats.
