13 - 9/27/21 : Snakes & Arrows

In-game date: 8th of Freyrmond, 3521
“Yilani… how kind of you to deliver the prey to us. You are far more clever than the speaker dared hope. Now… join us in this coming feast. Let us sing praises to Aapep as we dine on the flesh of the so-called civilized peoples.” - Relanu Alshella
As the party was confronted by the impostor of Renaer, Yilani briefly reflected on her time spent in her homeland, the vast desert, among other cultists of Aapep. She recalled the time of the great eclipse of 3517, her mind drifted to a trial in which she had to sacrifice a captured human man to prove her loyalty to Aapep. As her thoughts proceeded to the moment of holding the dagger, poised to strike, she saw the face of Renaer on the man in her memory for but a moment before it returned to normal.   Yilani’s vision passed, and the impostor called Yilani to fight alongside him and the other present Yuan-ti against her companions in the Red Spirits. Yilani briefly broke down, torn between her friends and new way of life against the place of her birth. As Yilani’s companions reacted in shock, the impostor noted her hesitation as a betrayal of Aapep and ordered his own minions to attack.   Surrounded and outnumbered, confused and beleaguered, the party was pushed to the brink in the fight against the impostor, several yuan-ti broodguards, a firing squad of purebloods wielding poisoned arrows, and even a powerful yuan-ti malison. However, the timely arrival of Ziraj the Hunter was able to salvage the fight in the favor of the Red Spirits.   After a pitched battle, the party prevailed against their attackers and managed to subdue the False Renaer. Yilani broke down and told the party the truth about her origin among the yuan-ti, her original mission, and her reason for turning against them in favor of her friends. The party reacted with skepticism, wariness, and disappointment, but they all agreed that Renaer was still unspoken for and needed to be saved. Reilly approached Yilani and had her swear an oath to not betray the party again, on penalty of forever being branded an enemy of the Summer Court of the fey.   The party took a gondola to quickly reach the Trades Ward where the Yuan-ti Hideout was located. Within, they located the field leader of the Yuan-ti, Yilani's superior Szaltelith, and engaged him in combat. Szaltelith was a formidable foe, managing to induce slumber in Yilani, Brooke, and Megumi all at once. Luckily, Reilly was able to stay awake and rushed to awaken her friends in kind. Szaltelith nearly tore Yilani to shreds, managing to burn through two of her bear shapes. However, the party managed to overcome him with help from a nearby captive tiefling who Megumi managed to free.   The party investigated the hideout, managing to find and recover Renaer as well as the similarly captive Bonziel Ramrider. They managed to also recover a number of minor relics to Aapep and a partly enchanted diamond. The captive tiefling disappeared mysteriously during this time. After arguing about the fate of Bonziel, the party agreed that it would be best to take her back to Troll Skull Manor and figure out where to go through from there; though the members of the Masquerade in the party figured she'd be best pressed for information.   A quick stop back at Brandath Manor revealed that Ziraj had indeed kept his word about keeping Renaer's impostor in line; he was also able to determine that Renaer's two remaining servants had been killed. Back at Troll Skull Manor, the party decided to turn over Bonziel to her younger sister Raeziel for the moment. Raeziel kept her sister bound but removed her cloth gag to allow her to speak. Bonziel identified the tiefling that had been with them and disappeared was a relatively new Xanathar recruit named Wander. Meanwhile, Renaer elected to stay at Troll Skull Manor to recover for the night.   Raeziel had a private talk with her sister, which Megumi eavesdropped on. Bonziel told Raeziel that their family (other than their elder sister Genziel) was plotting to rebel against the Xanathar by stealing a powerful, unknown relic that the Beholder had come into the possession of; however, they needed the best of the Ramrider's larceny experts for the job. They needed Raeziel. Raeziel spurned her sister and refused, but doing so clearly pained her given her complicated feelings for her family.   Yilani took a moment to speak to her party members about her regret. Though feelings were still strained, the party agreed to allow her to stay in order to prove herself worthy of their trust once again. Yilani silently endeavored to show her friends her devotion for that which she abandoned her former faith for.   Brooke finally took the time to speak to Violet telepathically, asking her how she ended up purple and in the care of Xoblob. Violet revealed that she was in fact once a human adventurer from the outskirts of Revelmoore, whose adventuring party descended into the Undermountain by way of the Balladeer’s Eclipse to seek fame and fortune. However, her companions perished, and she had a chance encounter with the Mad Mage, Halaster Blackcloak himself. She was lucky to survive the encounter, and Halaster let her go after merely casting true polymorph on her to transform her into a purple cat. Violet has since come to enjoy being a cat, and has no intent on changing back to her human self.   Reilly managed to identify the magic diamond, discerning it to be an incomplete bloodstone, a powerful divination item. If infused with blood, the bloodstone could be used to track the owner of the blood and any blood relatives they had. The party decided to take this stone with them when seeing Solauvaire later that day.

Portraits

The Red Spirits

Reilly Springs - A young, anxious satyr artificer and inventor, who attempts to sell her inventions to interested buyers. She has accepted membership in the Masquerade, and has fashioned for herself a magic suit of armor that grants her impressive combat capabilities. With Renaer Ambermantle’s help, she has finally repaid her debt to Raeziel Ramrider. She has taken to spending time with Fala Lefaliir, the serene gardener and proprietor of Aelbwynn’s Crown.
Brooke Acropora - A charming water genasi and a skilled performer who is ‘technically’ from Revelmoore, who entered the Balladeer’s Eclipse on the fateful day of the troll attack to investigate the Black Network. Brooke moonlights as a contributor to The Targe, a broadsheets publication that seeks out the most interesting and sauciest news scoops of the day. Brooke is focused on ensuring that Troll Skull Manor becomes an unforgettable spectacle to its visitors.
Megumi Sakane - A diminutive kitsune rogue and a traveling merchant, who seems to be looking for something or someone during her quest for wealth in the City of Splendors. Kind-hearted but quite avaricious, she uses her small size to her advantage as she sizes up individuals for valuables and wealth. She has revealed to the party that she must ritualistically offer 500,000 gold coins to Asmodeus by the end of the year, or her soul will be forfeit. She has invented a new persona for herself; the mysterious masked thief, Karma.
Yilani Deniz - A severe, perceptive Yuan-ti Pureblood druid who once masqueraded as a human refugee from Khemit in order to gather information on the wealthy and powerful of Revelmoore on behalf of a Yuan-ti cult of Aapep. After coming to love the city and her new friends, Yilani has turned her back on her people and helped to drive them out of the city before their nefarious plans could be enacted. Though there is lingering hurt among her companions because of her original mission, Yilani has resolved to prove the loyalty and dedication of her new self to her friends..
Lackadaisical - More commonly known as “Lacky”, this charming young tiefling woman is the daughter of the famed ex-adventurer Fomalhaut the Financier. She moonlights as a lawyer and represents members of less-than-legal enterprises in Revelmoore, including members of the Black Network. Along with Yilani, Lacky has joined the Black Network, and has also aligned with Solauvaire’s newly named Revelmoore Rangers.
Violet - A strange purple cat that was purchased by Brooke at the Old Xoblob Shop. For all intents and purposes, she seems to be a completely normal cat; save for the fact that her fur is a deep shade of violet. She told Brooke her story, revealing that she was once a human adventurer that was polymorphed into a purple cat by Halaster Blackcloak, the Mad Mage of the Undermountain. She appears to be more than happy with this situation.
Renaer Ambermantle - The estranged son of Dagult Ambermantle, the previous Open Lord of Revelmoore. A skilled fighter and a man of noble standing, Renaer has expressed his fondness of the party and his desire to continue his association with them. Despite facing almost universal distrust from the city’s nobility, he has a few friends in high places. Because of these connections, he was kidnapped by Yuan-ti infiltrators in order to gain access to powerful figures, but he was saved by the party before he could be killed or tortured for information.
Lif - A poltergeist and the former proprietor of Trollskull Manor. He was murdered forty years ago by the manor’s former owner out of jealousy for a girl he once loved. His spirit has remained in the manor, where he scared off intruders. After the party assured him that they wished to restore and reopen the tavern, Lif calmed himself and even aided in cleaning the place up. He took the liberty of arranging for interviews to fill the tavern’s staffing vacancies.
Raeziel Ramrider.png
Raeziel Ramrider - A duergar rogue and loan shark, who works as the Doom Raiders’ Master of Coin. She loaned Reilly a sum of gold at an exorbitant interest rate, but the debt has finally been paid off. Now a wanted fugitive thanks to Skeemo Weirdbottle’s betrayal, she is now hiding in Troll Skull manor under an assumed alias. She has learned that her family, which she abandoned years ago, is planning an insurrection against the Xanathar. This revelation has left her conflicted over her pride in her family’s legacy and her oaths to the Black Network.
Ziraj the Hunter - A tall half-orc man that carries around an absurdly large composite bow. According to Davil, he is the most talented assassin in Revelmoore. Originally a huntsman by trade, he moved to Revelmoore with his childhood friend Fala Lefaliir. The two were in a romantic relationship for a time, but Fala broke things off over Ziraj’s criminal affiliations and activities. Like Raeziel, Ziraj was made a fugitive by Skeemo’s betrayal, and is now laying low in the basement of Troll Skull manor. He intervened during the fight against the Yuan-ti infiltrators in Brandath Manor and kept the party from almost certain death.
Bonziel Ramrider - Raeziel’s older sister, and the middle of Don Ramrider’s three daughters. Unlike her younger sibling, Bonziel remains a member of the Xanathar Guild along with her father, elder sister, and many cousins. She had been captured by the Yuan-ti infiltrators, who planned on using her likeness to spy on the Xanathar Guild. Bonziel informed Raeziel that the Ramrider family, save for the eldest daughter Genziel, was planning on rebelling against the Xanathar by stealing a powerful artifact from the beholder’s clutches; however, they needed the expert thievery skills of Raeziel for the job. The proposal left Raeziel conflicted about her loyalties.
Wander - A tiefling individual and a recent recruit of the Xanathar Guild. Bonziel recognized them, but was confused as to why they were important enough to be captured. They were freed by Megumi and aided in the fight against Szaltelith, and disappeared before the party could catch up to them and question them.
Relanu Alshella - A Yuan-Ti infiltrator that replaced Renaer by way of the secret Yuan-Ti conspiracy to infiltrate Revelmoore. He expected Yilani to come to his aid, and was taken by surprise after noticing her hesitation. He was subdued by the party in the following combat, and was left in the care of Ziraj the Hunter, who forcibly removed his fangs with a knife before binding and gagging him. He is currently being held in Troll Skull manor.
Szaltelith - The field leader of the Yuan-ti conspiracy to infiltrate and take over Revelmoore. He was Yilani’s direct superior in the plot, and was caught unawares by her betrayal. Though he fought ferociously against Yilani and her companions, he was eventually slain, effectively ending the Yuan-ti plot before it could do any serious damage.
Yuan-ti Nightmare Speaker - A figure from Yilani’s memories and a spiritual leader of the Yuan-ti cult in the Vast Desert. She presided over an observation of the great eclipse of 3517, in which one of Lloegyr’s moons eclipsed the sun for several months. This event was seen as an omen of Aapep’s ascension and a sign for his followers to strike out at civilization, prompting Yilani’s training and her eventual journey to Revelmoore. She is presumably still alive.
Yuan-ti Anathema - A hideous abomination made of snakes, twisted flesh, and pure malice. Anathema are seen as perfection in the eyes of the Yuan-ti, the ultimate representation of Aapep’s glory, and are even thought to be divine messengers or even avatars of the snake god. An anathema lurked in the waters of the oasis that the Yuan-ti Cult in the Vast Desert lived near, though it rarely made an appearance out of a fear of driving the lesser-blooded yuan-ti into fits of zealous hysteria. It made a brief appearance during the eclipse of 3517 and encouraged Yilani to act in Aapep’s name. It is presumably still alive.
Halaster Blackcloak - A mythical, maniacal wizard of incomprehensible magical might that is known to lurk in the Undermountain, which he claims as his own domain. He has supposedly dwelled in the dark since before Revelmoore’s founding, and has made himself known in varying capacities to adventurers trying to find their way through the Undermountain. Despite his astronomical power, he rarely, if ever, ventures out of the Undermountain, and is not seen as a threat to those who live above ground in Revelmoore. He is still spoken of in legend and in tales meant to scare young children, however. He was responsible for awakening the shark Obliteros, whom the Rat Catchers encountered, and was also the one who used true polymorph to turn Violet into her current form as a cat.
