"Praying for luck is not a surrender. Sometimes freedom is but an unachievable dream, and in these times, what can one do but hope for fate to smile upon them, and lead them to brighter days?"
  • Elemmírë, Silverstar of Desna

  •   Connie, Makoto, and a disguised Vesper met with Elemmírë, the high priestess of Desna at Revelmoore's local open-air temple of Desna; a traditional construction allowing for the viewing of the stars by the faithful. Elemmírë greeted the trio warmly, and Connie took the lead in explaining the party's situation.   Elemmírë was immediately captivated by Connie's depiction of the mural of Desna portrayed as a dark elf, but insisted that she see the image herself in order to properly decipher its religious meaning. Connie bemoaned the idea of returning to the Undermountain, while Makoto was eager for another delve into Halaster's domain.   The two also discussed their theory that Vesper was looked upon with favor by Desna. This predictably annoyed Vesper, but confused Elemmírë, who stated that Desna was not a goddess to bestow powers or blessings to 'chosen' individuals. Vesper took the opportunity to mock the deity's supposed conflicting domains of freedom and luck, claiming that to hope for luck was to surrender one's freedom to act and choose. Elemmírë, likely having heard the argument before, gently rebuked the drow's words and shared her view that freedom and luck were two ideals to strive for in tandem, not in competition with each other, and that one could lead to the other.   The group agreed to take Elemmírë to the Balladeer's Eclipse the following day, but not before Elemmírë offered to read their fortunes for a gold coin apiece. Her divination revealed the following, cryptic portents:
    • Contrast: "The treasure you seek is in the fruit."
    • Makoto: "That which you hold most dear will turn against you and lead you to ruin."
    • Vesper: "There be dragons in your head. Make sure to feed them."
The trio departed the temple for the night and sought lodgings at the Eclipse before returning the following day, bringing Elemmírë to the tavern around noon. As they approached, they noticed light emanating from the Eclipse's windows, as well as raucous music. They entered to find a magical light show, illuminating several revelers standing atop the Eclipse's chain bridge as they belted out joyous song. Arathir, his daughter Anitari, and a famous halfling bard named Hamlin Hearthchaser cheerily recited the drinking song Hear Ye All You Rascals, a jaunty tune about a particularly sly halfling adventurer:
Now hear ye all you rascals, with your bellies full of pie,
And listen to this tale of old where the hero’s four feet high! (Yay!!)
He’s a master of concealment, and an adept at disguise,
Which he uses when he’s sneaking past a husband’s watchful eye!
He’s slain many a villain, be it dragon wolf or wizard,
And he’s looted chests, of all the best of treasures he could find!
He’s the undefeated champion, of adventure war and passion,
And he sings this song as he goes along with a fiddle and a pipe
The Grass is Green, The Air Is Clean
A sweet lass by my side,
    There ain’t nobody looking so,
    I squeeze her rump behind.
The world is full of monsters vile but
They ain’t here at the time
So lift your roast, propose a toast
To these drunken friends of mine!
Our hero journeyed far and wide, finding riches, gold and magic,
But he never found his true loves heart, and it made him sad and tired
then one day while he was walking, he was shot as he was singing,
An elf maiden fair from over there, with a bow as she was fine.
She apologized profusely, said she thought he was a dwarf,
And she carried him to the nearest inn, where she nursed him back to life,
Well they fell in love directly, and she married him that night,
So the Halfling and the comely Elf made a song about their time:
The Grass is Green, The Air Is Clean
A sweet lass by my side,
    There ain’t nobody looking so,
    I squeeze her rump behind!
The world is full of monsters vile but
They ain’t here at the time
So lift your roast, propose a toast
To these drunken friends of mine!
Meanwhile, Connie seemed to recognize the tiefling wizard creating the light show and reacted with great nervousness. To avoid her eye, he used silent image to keep his true face hidden. As the song concluded and Hamlin began leading the tavern's clientele in further merriment, Arathir and Anitari saw the adventurers and Elemmírë and approached happily. Anitari greeted Elemmírë as "mother" to the surprise of Connie and Makoto.   After a brief explanation of their purpose, the party was allowed entrance into the Undermountain after paying one gold piece per head. As they were lowered via the chained bridge, Hamlin Hearthchaser led the tavern in the traditional "dipping song":
    Deep and dark down below,
where only fools and braggarts go,
where monster roam and dangers amidst,
    few survive the Balladeer’s Eclipse!
Stand your ground or ring the bell,
and hope you make it up the well!
Within the Undermountain, Makoto felt a strange sense of familiarity and odd comfort; this was soon accompanied with Halaster's loud voice greeting the party and inviting them into his legendary maze.   The party noted that the pathways leading back to Vesper's former home had since changed according to Halaster's whims. They decided to forge a new pathway, treading lightly in anticipation of traps. They managed to come across several statues of tanar'ri - the chaotic fiends of the Abyss - and discovered that one of the statues concealed a hidden passageway. The passageway led to a murky pool that seemed to feed into the city's sewer lines, and hid a glowing statue of a sahuagin with its head reversed.   Using her innate high drow magic, Vesper made Makoto capable of levitation, which the rogue used to approach the statue. She discovered that the head was fitted onto screw seams, and she carefully unscrewed the head to find a cavity hiding a golden hoop earring and a note. The earring proved to be a magical earring of stolen luck, while the note contained a short message:
Dear Makoto,   Will you be my live dungeon test subject?   ( ) y
    ( ) n
  • H

  •   Makoto smirked and attuned to the earring before returning to the party. They ventured further in and encountered a pair of poorly concealed, strangely moving bugbears sporting armor of the Xanathar Syndicate, who readily attacked them. After exchanging vicious blows, the party discovered that the bugbears were in fact corpses being 'piloted' by horrific intellect devourers. The party narrowly avoided their psyches being obliterated and their brains devoured, slaying the creatures and earning a brief respite.   Deeper within, the party discovered a glowing longsword resting in the center of a room. However, Halaster soon intervened, announcing his dissatisfaction with the room as-is as it didn't "match proficiencies" with the party. The sword was quickly replaced with an innocuous looking metal quill, which Connie picked up. He discovered it to be a magic item known as a courier's quillblade, a dagger capable of serving as a spellcasting focus, as well as copying text from objects and transferring it to other surfaces.   The party's next encounter was a friendlier one; a four-person adventuring party known as the Fairhill Four, whom they had encountered in the Balladeer's Eclipse previously, had barricaded themselves in a two-door room in order to rest in between fights. Edea, a chipper half-elf gunslinger, reacted to the party knocking on their door with a quick but luckily askew five-round burst from her revolver before realizing the visitors were not enemies. She welcomed the party in and introduced her companions Ozwik, Yukina, and Wyncaryn.   Ozwik, a stoic half-orc with the bearing of a soldier, warned his fellow adventurers that his own party had been stalked during their time in the Undermountain by a 'skittering thing' they had yet to lay eyes on. He advised caution before proceeding further in. Wyncaryn merely relaxed and mixed various pungent herbs, while Yukina cheerily chatted while sitting atop a pile of gold and loot.   Their brief respite concluded, the party of Connie, Makoto, Vesper, and Elemmírë decided to carry on. Edea admired Makoto's sawed-off shotgun as they departed, and advised the rogue to meet with her at a place known as the Spring of Creation if she wanted to have the piece looked at with a machinist's eye.   It didn't take the party long to finally find the Temple of Desna once more, and the sight of the temple's central artistic dedication predictably captivated Elemmírë. She immediately began notating the curiosities of the site; the fact that it was underground and away from the open view of the stars was chief among her observations, given that this was a break from established ritual.   She also pointed out a previously unseen socket where Desna's eye would be; in this socket a specially blessed gemstone was supposed to be placed, which would subsequently reveal the shrine's favored religious verses and its reason for being dedicated. However, the requisite gemstone was missing, and Elemmírë was unsure of where it could have been placed, though she supposed that it might have something to do with the supposed drow origin of the particular temple.   Elemmírë advised further research as the party began to depart for the surface; however, before they could leave the temple, a skittering sound was heard, and particularly feral-looking mind flayer dropped into view and hissed, baring its tentacles lined with sharp teeth. The group prepared for combat with this dangerous foe, hoping it would fall just as the intellect devourers before it...

    Portraits

    HALASTER BLACKCLOAK

The Mad Mage of the Undermountain, and one of the most powerful spellcasters in all of Lloegyr. This legendarily insane wizard has near-control over the great dungeon that he has claimed as his home, and is able to shape it and influence its residents to his will.   Having noticed greater adventurer traffic in the Undermountain following the conclusion of the Dragon Heist, he has decided to 'reset' much of the dungeon to be ready for them, that he may enjoy the entertainment of watching would-be heroes tackling the horrors below Revelmoore. To this end, he has taken a keen interest in the heroes; Makoto in particular.

    PLAYER CHARACTERS

'Gold Eyes' Makoto - A half-elven rogue, a smuggler and gunslinger who donates much of her ill-gotten gains to the local charities of Revelmoore. Tough, confident, and disdainful of decorum, she sees Halaster's schemes and the subsequent threads of inquiry as a chance to solidify her place in the world and make a healthy heap of coin while doing it. She has apparently earned the favor of Halaster Blackcloak; a potentially deadly alliance indeed.
Contrast - A tiefling bard, a nobleman of a yet-unknown house and a painter of no small skill. He seeks to pursue his passions instead of fulfilling his noble obligations. This trepidatious artist has found himself embroiled in a plot between the Mad Mage Halaster and an untold number of dangerous enemies, much against his will. He seems to find himself quite nervous around certain individuals in the noble circles of Revelmoore.

Vesper - A drow fighter, a runaway from drow society, and a former member of the now-defunct Scions of Black Hearts that once served Veszaltyrr Oussndar in his bid for domination. She is a Szarkai, a term that means "Ghost Scorpion" in the drow language, and is used to describe rare albino drow whose births are heralded as blessings from Lolth. With her comrades either dead or disappeared and the agents of Lolth seeking her death for her betrayal, she now faces a fierce battle for survival; a battle her surfacer comrades are determined to drag her through, kicking and screaming.

    NON-PLAYER CHARACTERS

Elemmírë - The high priestess of Densa in Revelmoore. This tiefling woman maintains the temple and leads worship of the Goddess of Freedom, Luck, and the Stars. Her help was enlisted to decipher the mysteries of the Underground temple of Desna. She used to be married to Arathir Starsong, the proprietor of the Balladeer's Eclipse, with whom she has one daughter named Anitari. The two split amicably a few years ago.
Arathir Starsong - Proprietor and owner of the Balladeer's Eclipse, Revelmoore's premier tavern and the home of the most-traveled route to the Undermountain. A retired adventurer, he has had his fair share of escapades and brushes with death. Although he would rather no adventurers descend and lose their lives in the dungeon below, he knows he cannot stop them, and so he plays the part of a warden, denying access to those who cannot fund their passage and giving kind advice to those who can. He allowed the party and his ex-wife Elemmírë passage into the Undermountain for the standard fee of one gold piece per head.
Anitari Starsong - The daughter of Arathir Starsong and Elemmírë. Her parents divorced on amicable terms some time ago, but she remains close to the both of them. She accompanied her father in leading the patrons of the Balladeer's Eclipse in song and dance with her soothing soprano voice and a joyously-bowed violin.
Hamlin Hearthchaser - A famed halfling minstrel who delighted the Balladeer's Eclipse with jaunty drinking songs of halfling origin. He sports a large moustache and chops, and plays a particularly fat lute.
??? - A female tiefling wizard of apparent noble bearing, given her fine clothing and well-maintained appearance. She provided the performers of the Balladeer's Eclipse with a dazzling arcane light show. Her presence greatly unnerved Connie, but a clever magical disguise was enough to throw her off of his trail.
    Edea Lockehart.png
Edea Lockehart - A half-elven gunslinger and artificer from Fareme, a desert-border town in the Stoneheart Valley. She is a member of the Fairhill Four and is a source of unending optimism for her companions, helping to keep them smiling in tough times. She is a skilled inventor, is a peerless shot with her revolver, Pearl, and possesses nearly unnatural reflexes and dexterity.
Ozwik Irontusk - A half-orc stone sorcerer and a member of the Fairhill Four who carries a soldier's bearing. He strives to be the voice of reason among his party during their adventures, keeping them on-task and down-to-earth. His innate magics grant him command over rock and stone, and bolster his martial abilities as well.
    Yukina.png
Yukina - A perfectly normal human barbarian, who certainly does not possess horns or a tail or any dragon-y stuff like that, don't be silly. She is a fierce combatant and one of the most dangerous members of the Fairhill Four; she is able to rend opponents to pieces with deadly blades and beast-like fury summoned from within. Outside of combat, she is curious and kind.
Wyncaryn - An elven monk and a member of the Fairhill Four. Laid-back and difficult to disturb, Wyn nonetheless fights with surprising deftness and skill in battle. She takes most things in stride and lets her party do most of the talking and decision-making, but she is always ready when it comes to action.
Long-toothed Mind Flayer - A ravenous beast that had been stalking the Fairhill Four before shifting its sights to the party of Connie, Makoto, Vesper, and Elemmírë. Hissing and screeching at its potential prey, it seems unusually feral for an illithid, with ragged clothing and no typical air of superiority.
