Chasca

The Mother of Flame

As the last of the spring blossoms close and fade, it is Chasca who arrives with a blazing inferno at her back. A fiery beacon, she guides those who transition from children with seemingly impossible dreams to young men and women with tangible aspirations. Summer brings with it the heat needed to forge something new, to encourage growth, and to renew the old and reignite the forgotten. A simple spark is enough to drive a course of action or to ignite a passion that brings forth new life. Chasca was a patron of growth, mothers and childbirth, transitions, and renewal. Her association with fire often manifested through her domains of growth, renewal, and fertility. She was often depicted as a broad-shouldered, muscular woman with an elaborate headdress of foliage and feathers resembling a peacock’s train. In one arm, she would often hold a young child, nestled securely on her hip, while in the other hand she often held a weapon, most commonly a spear. Although heavily associated with fire and flame iconography, these symbols often referred to the inner flame rather than actual fire.

The Guardian of Families

Chasca, as a guardian of families, was a goddess who dipped her toes into a variety of domains that were more generally associated with other Jalasaran deities. Although Eden was formally associated with protection, most prayed to Chasca to protect a mother and child during childbirth. Although Adore was formally associated with true love and commitment, it was Chasca who oversaw both in the specific context of a family unit. And although Jalasar had its suite of war gods, those who had sent siblings, parents, or children off to war would often pray to Chasca to grant them the spark needed to fight and the light to bring them home.

Tenets of Faith

Nurture the Fire Within – Within ever mortal is a flame, which must be nurtured and encouraged to grow. Dreams of youth should be used as fuel to drive forth action, to ignite passion, and to discover new avenues of growth. When stagnation and indecision threaten, turn to the fire within you and allow it to burn bright, offering a light that can guide. For the burning fire is the truest essence of the self, of wants and needs. Take care to nurture this flame, lest it burn to hot that it chokes you… or dwindles to a cooled ember.
