Noble Sovereign
Sovereigns are disks of gold or platinum resembling large coins, and are used by Nobles to assert their status. It's a bit like carrying a seal, but they're much lighter and easier to conceal. Sometimes, Nobles will give their Sovereign to their employees to allow them to make transactions or act on their behalf, usually higher ranking individuals like Butlers or trusted Guard Captains. All Nobles have a different design on their Sovereign, so you can immediately identify whose it is, though if it's used outside of the Noble's usual city or territory, they have this book you can check called "The Directory of Sovereigns and Emblems". Losing a Sovereign is considered taboo, so most Nobles will severely punish a servant who loses one, or will go out of their way to cover up a lost Sovereign if they can. Most of the time though, they'll just commission a new one with a new design and claim it's "on a whim". Must be nice having so much money to throw away...
Anyway, I managed to steal one while in Verodeen last. I got lucky; it was a platinum one set with what I think are opals, so it's a high-ranking household and nobody noticed me at all! It's no use to me, except maybe to melt down and reforge or sell, but Magpie appreciates it! Maybe it'll go in his collection or something, it's a Verodeen Noble Sovereign, so it's not often seen in Osthaven.
Manufacturing process
An authorised issuer carves a "blank" using wax and standard jewellers' tools, and a mold is then formed using silica sand. Gold or platinum is poured into the mold then allowed to set. Once the molding is done and the Sovereign removed, the sand is reused for other jewellery and metalwork. The blank is then kept in a secure Vault belonging to the authorised issuer.
History
Nobles used to carry around small wooden plaques with their emblem on, or a brass seal or stamp. They still have them, but they're only used for ceremonies or official shit now as they're quite bulky and heavy. They made Sovereigns as a much lighter, easier to conceal alternative.
Authorised Issuers are the only people who can make Sovereigns. Making a fake one is considered a serious offense.
Varies depending on whose Sovereign it is.
It varies depending on the Noble and their Rank, but they're usually made from gold or platinum. Some from higher ranking households are set with precious stones, such as diamonds, rubies and opals.
