Core Species
The five core species - dwarves, gnomes, halflings, humans, and orcs - were formed into being by the core deities of creation: Conzotl, Ehrendil, Khisteus, Lillon, and Tithys. They are the most common species of Dulūn, making up nearly 80% of its population. Though many of the members of the core species still worship or at least pay tribute to their creators, there are many more who live their own lives separated from the divine. While some are reverent of the core deities for the life they instilled in them, others simply think of this fact as just an event that happened long ago, nothing making the gods any more worthy of worship in their eyes.Dwarf
Dwarves were created by Conzotl, the god of minerals and resources. The first dwarves were much taller, with skin resembling rock and stone, but current-day dwarves are much shorter, with natural or grey skin tones.
Gnome
Gnomes were created by Ehrendil, the goddess of nature and wildlife. There are two gnome subspecies: forest and shadow. Gnomes have pointed ears and colourful hair, and tend to have long names due to their naming culture.
Halfling
Halflings are children of Khisteus, the deity of weather. There are two halfling sub-types: Sun, and storm, reflecting two of the most common temperaments of their deity. Halflings are shorter humanoids, often with curly or coily hair.
Human
Humans were Lillon's creation, the deity of balance. They are one of the most widespread species in Dulūn, as well as the most common. They are highly adaptable to any habitat, with generalised skills that can be applied to nearly any situation. As such, humans can be found residing almost everywhere on Dulūn, the most common of the core species.
Orc
Orcs are the creation of the celestial Tithys, god of courage and warfare and earth. Orcs are larger and bulkier humanoids, with green, grey, or brown skin. Their eyes tend to be warmer-toned, and they are much taller than most other species. Within the species, grey orcs tend to be on the shorter side, and brown orcs a bit taller.
Standard Species
Standard species are those that can be found on the Material Plane, though they are less common than the Core Species. Their origins vary, from being created and subsequently forsaken by a lesser deity to migrating from other planes of existence. Some standard species, such as drakinae and the elves, are much more common and well-known, while other species such as inklings, saibrans, and eosene, are very rarely found or known of by the other species.Alarian
Alarians are a species known for their hunting prowess, native to the moon of Myhe Alari - though some have travelled to Dulūn through rare and ancient portals known as moongates. Alarians hold a great amount of respect for the animals they hunt. It is considered a great offence to an alarian to hunt purely for fun or sport.
Drakina
Drakinae are those born of dragons, or with draconic blood in their veins. While most drakinae are half-dragon, it is also not uncommon for members of other species to have draconic blood or lineage. As such, the physical appearances of drakinae vary greatly, from entirely draconic to almost fully humanoid.
Elf
Elves are the descendants of sylvans, the fey of the Five Forests. Cast out from the Feywild long ago, elves still display many of the features of their ancestors - though are significantly more human in likeness and behaviour. Elves, like sylvans, have the longest lifespans among the known species, considered biologically immortal.
Eosene
The eosene are tall and slender humanoids with grey, blue-grey, or white skin, and are nearly weightless. Dancing across their arms, backs, and legs are the swirling bright blue marks of their culture. Beginning as lines, each swirl denotes an important point in their lives, direction and location indicating details.
Felinid
Felenids are cat-like folk that come in many different shapes, sizes, and colours, and are found in a particularly higher density near trees and forests. They tend to live in tight-knit communities. Even those who find themselves apart from their people desire similar connection, often joining adventuring parties.
Imbued
The imbued are sentient beings who possess inanimate bodies. Living dolls, machine bodies, and magical constructs all fall under this category. While the reason for their creation can vary, imbued are common in regions that place a focus on magic or tech.
Inkling
Inklings are small beings with viscous, inky black skin, ink once splattered on a page brought to life. Born from the mind of an old goddess of libraries, inklings are considered wise and intelligent, and friends to mages - though they are often themselves mages.
Mountainborn
Mountainborn are the descendants of the giants of old - significantly smaller, yet only marginally less strong. Mountainborn tower over others, known for their impressive feats of strength. They bear facial tattoos to represent their lineage and home.
Mycena
Mycenae are the fungal folk found under the surface of Dulūn. They live in hive-minded colonies deep underground, and use their spores to communicate telepathically with others. On the rare occasion one is found on the surface, severed from their hive mind, it is usually due to drastic circumstances.
Myldalan
Myldalans are descendents of the original followers of Myldala, blessed with gifts of the goddess of magic. They still resemble their ancestor’s goddess, though not all myldalans are devout followers of the Astral Lady. Lineages of myldalans are split into seven distinct lines, each with traits from their originator.
Saibran
Saibrans are four-armed humanoids of nebulous origin. They seem to have a greater connection to magic, as well as incredible recall abilities. Their skin tones ranging from sandy to dust-like, and with reddish or jet black hair and topaz or ruby coloured eyes, the appearance of a saibran is often reminiscent of a desert.
Vasilm
Vasilm are the people of the sea. Their origins are shrouded in mystery - a fact which is not helped by their minimal contact with land species. These aquatic folk build massive cities and settlements deep under the ocean, rarely ever approaching land. Vasilm are found most commonly in the southern waters of the planet, near Kaurenis.
Zelenome
Zelenomes are small humanoids descended from gnomes. They can be recognised by their short stature, reddish or greenish skin tones, and long, pointed ears sitting almost perpendicular to their faces. Zelenomes often clash with nearby civilisations due to their culture having little to no concept of private or personal property.
Extraplanar Species
Extraplanar species are those who have origins outside of the Material Plane, though many end up travelling to or through it at some point in their lives. These folk may be native to the windswept skies of Aurelle, the shadowed lands of the Shadowfell, or simply be changed by the corruptive influence of creatures from the Planar Void. Though most will spend their lives in their home plane of existence, there are a few who choose to venture outwards, sometimes making their way to the much more densely populated Prime Material. There is often somewhat of a culture shock for such travellers, with their almost alien cultures compared to the people of the Material Plane. Still, they may have many different reasons to become adventurers or take up these novel professions in this strange and highly populated world.Aetherling
Native to the Elemental Planes, the aetherlings are the subsection of elemental beings with sapience. Aetherlings do not possess a soul, unable to enter the afterlife. Instead, upon their death, the elemental energy that comprised their physical form returns to their plane of origin, eventually becoming an elemental again.
Aberrant
Aberrants are a species that emerged during the age of the First Children, having been psychically enslaved for an age. With their cloudy eyes and greyish skin, they are undeniably inhuman, with an almost unnerving air about them. They are few and far between, and most live solitary lives far from civilization.
Aurellian
Aurellians are the bird-folk native to the Elemental Plane of Air. Having adapted to the harsh winds and constant daylight of their home plane, these nomadic avians have made their homes across the floating islands of Aurelle. Many Aurellians have a natural sense of wanderlust, and a general wonder for the world around them.
Faerie
Faeries come in two varieties: “true” fairies, and darklings. True faeries, from the Seelie Realm, are ruled by the archfey Pyke, prince of the Seelie Court and leader of its forces. Born from flowers, these faeries are not as nice as they may seem, often holding an affinity for pranks and tricks. Darklings, on the other hand, are those who denied the Seelie’s rules and reign, and broke away under the leadership of Hethranil into the Unseelie Realm.
Faeryn
The Faeryn are an honourable people, and the most lawful of the Unseelie. Led by the archfey Balvan, many Faeryn are highly-trained soldiers and excellent fighters. Though they are vastly different from the rest of the Unseelie, they still earn their place among them through their militaristic power and might. Their reddish skin and bulky forms make for an intimidating foe, discouraging the Seelie from moving against them.
Nymph
Nymphs have a unique connection to nature, their life forces tied to the world around them. There are many different types of nymphs: dryads, nereids, naiads, aurae, nephele, and oreads, all tied to different natural sources. No matter their origin, nymphs strongly resemble the element of nature they are connected to.
Satyr
With humanoid upper bodies and the legs of goats, sheep, or deer, satyrs are led by their queen, Pylpiexia. Satyrs from the Feywild are fond of open spaces and are usually incredibly social people, and will turn any occasion into a party. Many satyrs take up bardic occupations, bringing joy and whimsy wherever they go.
Shyft
The term “Shyft” encompasses multiple different species of varying origins who all share one primary quality: the ability to change shape at will. Some shyfts are from the Shadowfell, some were normal children who were affected by aberrant magic, and some originate from the Elemental Plane of Shadow.
Starkin
Starkin are a species native to the Astral Plane, resembling small humanoid-ish masses of light (or, in rare cases, darkness). Many travel through the Astral Sea in groups known as pods. When a starkin reaches the end of its life, its soul finds a place on the Astral Plane to remain, forming a link to the Material Plane.
Sylvan
Sylvans are the vaguely humanoid folk of the Five Forests. Sylvans most closely resemble the elves of the material plane, their genetic descendants. Their distinguishing features are their long-limbed forms, sharpened teeth, larger and unsettling eyes, and seasonal features based on which of the Forests they are from.
Umbran
Native to the Shadowfell, umbrans are grey-skinned humanoids with sunken features and a gaze that stares right through you. They build villages and cities in the Shadowfell, finding beauty in its greyscale landscapes and dead foliage. Still, if given the chance, many Umbrans venture outside of their home plane.
Lineages (optional)
Bloodcursed
Bloodcursed have found themselves on the receiving end of the wrath of a powerful being. Be it an archfey, a demon, or even a celestial deity that they wronged, they carry the scars of this slight with them. Their appearance reflects this burden, such as claw-like fingers, unsettling eyes, or black blood.Bloomkin
Bloomkin are children of nature, a symbiotic relationship between a humanoid and a plant. In most cases, these are mutualistic - the plant gains a home, and the humanoid gains abilities. However, there have been cases of parasitic bloomkin, where plants pilot a corpse.Cambion
A cambion is a person with demonic blood or heritage. Cambions inherit some form of demonic hunger, which they can choose to deny, or feed to gain more power. The appearance of a cambion and the manifestation of their hunger depends on their demonic lineage.Demi-Celestial
Demi-celestials are mortals descended from celestial blood. Demi-celestials can be born of angelic beings, or even occasionally of gods (though this is incredibly rare). Alternatively, a demi-celestial can be created sometime (usually very early) during their lifetime. Typically, one can only become a demi-celestial within the first fraction of their life, before they are fully aware of themselves or their surroundings, as the adjustment to divine blood is a startling one.Feylost
Feylost are what become of people from the Material Plane who spend too much time within the Feywild. Its strange magic shapes them, and they do not leave the same. This may manifest in physical changes to appearance, such as sharpened teeth, lack of a shadow, antlers, or unnaturally-coloured eyes. However, it can also manifest as minor effect surrounding the feylost individual, such as a faint yet ever-present sound of laughing, or a chill in the air following them everywhere.Hellspawn
Those with infernal heritage or ties to the Nine Hells, hellspawn resemble their devil parent or patron. Some sprout bat-like wings, others grow horns atop their heads, and others may appear completely normal save for something unsettling in their smile.Hagblood
Hagbloods have been touched by the magic of a hag, the first step towards becoming one. There are three telltale features that all hagbloods share: a crown-like horn or antler formation on their heads, unnaturally coloured skin, and blackened, claw-like fingers.Plane-Soul
Plane-souls are those of mortal bodies with elemental spirits, tied to the Elemental Planes. They take after their element, physically resembling either Water, Fire, Air, or Earth. They are most often born of other species, and affected by strong elemental magic.Reborn
Reborn are people who sit on the edge between life and death, though they are neither. Most often, they are folk who were once alive, and once dead, but were brought back not-quite-fully from the afterlife. The appearance of a reborn can vary from that of a walking corpse to being virtually indistinguishable from a humanoid. However, without blood running through their veins, reborn are cold to the touch, and tend to have much greyer skin tones than their living counterparts.Revenant
Revenants are the dead who have returned to the realm of the living due to unfinished business. Marked by glowing red eyes, they have a connection, desire, or will so strong that they have forced their way back into their bodies in pursuit of it. They have one sole purpose, this unfinished business, and will pass over to the afterlife only after it is complete. If a revenant dies before this business is complete, and their body is still in tact, they will return to life within just a few days, albeit weaker.Vampire
Vampires are those afflicted with vampirism, a supernatural condition with abyssal origins. The term has since expanded to include a few conditions that are related on only a surface level: blood, magic, and psionic, as well as a lesser form of blood vampirism.Weaveling
Weavelings are individuals who were born or conceived around an excess of magical power of a specific colour. Their bodies are intrinsically changed due to this magical influence, often formed due to the aftermath of a powerful spell at their place and time of birth.Werebeast
Werebeasts are those who transform into the shape of a beast, their transformation often triggered externally. Though they may have some control over their ability to shift into this form, it takes years of practice to master control over their actions in their beast form.
I didn't realise you had so many species/lineages! How fun. :D
