Nomadic Traders
“How was winter on the road?” I asked. Nessie always had the best stories, and she would tell me every detail. “Well we were down south a bit more than our usual scope. We were hoping to have a little more warmth, not that these two knuckleheads need it,” she said playfully while messing with the Iris’ thick fur. “We didn’t manage to leave the state but still. Down there the winds could knock the life out of you. They would take the snow off the ground and cut you with it, like little tornadoes of silver.” Nessie made a tornado with her hands, then took off her gloves to warm them easier. When she opened her bag she suddenly launched back into conversation excitedly. “We saw a few more settlements before the weather got too bad. One of them was like this greenhouse and they had so many plants, but they had been sleeping on the floor and had no reinforcement so with a little bit of bartering I got you these!” Nessie pulled out salt and pepper shakers labeled with the names of flowers, and two water bottles with plants in them..."
Career
Qualifications
Nomadic Traders have to be pretty charismatic and pragmatic in order to barter during the apocalypse.
Nomadic Traders need to have good survival skills, even in the worse conditions, due to them having to travel all over.
Nomadic Traders need to have good memory, awareness and navigation. So that they can remember their paths, identify if something is wrong (like zombies or storms), and remember what people may have talked about needing.
Payment & Reimbursement
Nomadic traders usually get places to stay, food, medicine, weapons, protection, trinkets, and such in response to their work.
Other Benefits
Being a Nomadic Trader means not having to worry about upkeep of locations and settlements. Since they are always moving they get to experience the world, which keeps them from going stir crazy and lonely. They also very rarely run out of supplies, due to them commonly coming across places that are now ghost towns.
Perception
Purpose
They act as merchants, which also keep settlements from being SOL when they run out of certain supplies. Some of them have specialties so they can help settlements get their roots down.
Social Status
Only the "high and mighty" really see them as lesser than. Though it is stigmatized that people in this occupation are running from something, are thieves, or murderers. Still some see it as a moral falling to kill these people, since they give back to communities at such a high risk. Almost every settlement has "verified" merchants that they are loyal to. Though beginning or cut off settlements usually believe they are invading people since they haven't seen them often, and that is one of the biggest killers of them.
