The Sooty Bramble

Travelers who wander too close to the Sooty Bramble speak of a land where the ground grows its own nightmares. The brambles there writhe in long, coiling tendrils, each one the ashen echo of a “snake” firework—those small toys that smoke and glow and leave behind curling trails of charcoal. But here the trails never end. They keep winding outward, layering upon themselves, a forest of black spirals that creak like burnt bones when the plane shifts.
The Sooty Bramble lies beneath a sky of slow-turning ash, a twilight realm where the smoke never clears and the light never fully returns. Every inch of its blasted ground is choked with blackened bramble coils—strange, brittle things that resemble the serpentine trails of the old-world “snake” fireworks. They twist and curl as though grown from ember and soot rather than sap and earth, each branch a crusted spiral of dark ash. Some still faintly glow at their cores, stretching by imperceptible degrees, as if continuing to grow long after the spark that birthed them should have gone out.

Smoke drifts everywhere, yet it behaves as though unaware of wind or gravity. Wisps hover motionless in the air, pooling in layers like ghostly curtains. Dustings of soot hang suspended, forming shadowed silhouettes that shift only when stared at too long. And despite the gloom, despite the omnipresent haze, the air carries no acrid sting—rather, it smells faintly and persistently of warm pipe tobacco, as though some unseen halfling god dallies just out of sight, enjoying a quiet smoke while the plane murmurs and curls around itself.
