Captain Tidevein
Captain of the Mermaid's Lament
Ever dream of drowning—but peacefully?
Appearance
A weatherworn man with salt-matted hair, lined eyes, and a calm, unnervingly serene gaze. His storm-stiffened cloak carries the scent of sea spray and secrets. Around his neck hangs a necklace made of barnacle-encrusted bone, disturbingly old and possibly human in origin. He always seems to be listening—to the wind, the waves, or something deeper.
Personality & Demeanor
Mirun speaks in riddles and dream imagery. His words are soft, deliberate, and often unsettling. He’s curious about other people’s dreams and nightmares, especially if they involve water, drowning, or being called by unseen voices.
“The sea forgives what the land buries.”
“Don’t fight the dreams—they’ll come back stronger.”
Most who meet him consider him wise, if a bit mad.
Reputation & Rules
“Good man—by reputation—but I’d keep an eye on him.”
– Elder Willem Harrow
Despite his eccentricities, Mirun is widely respected by his crew and those familiar with sea trade around Leilon. However, his habits, cryptic speech, and rituals draw quiet suspicion.
Ship Rules aboard the Mermaid’s Lament:
- Stay clear of the crew when they’re working—ropes and tempers run short.
- If trouble comes, fight with the crew—not against them.
- Do not draw steel against sea elves. Respect goes both ways.
He refuses to take miners as passengers:
“It’s bad luck mixing stone and sea on the same crew.”
Dream Philosophy
Mirun often hints at a belief in an ancient sea-born consciousness—"The Sleeper"—though he names no god. His faith is subtle, expressed through metaphors and serene conviction.
Common Sayings:
- “Ever dream of drowning, but peacefully?”
- “All dreams lead to the same tide.”
- “The Sleeper’s tide is rising—easier to drift with it than fight the pull.”
When pressed about his own dreams, he says:
“Mine are full of singing whales and shadowed waves. Always the same voice, calling me deeper.”
Rumors & Hooks
- Once took a job to Skullport; got the crew out unharmed. Slavers tried to buy them—Mirun refused.
- Refuses pay from miners seeking escape—believes they bring bad omens.
- Obsessed with dreams. Listens intently when others describe nightmares.
- May be part of an unknown cult or dream-faith devoted to an ancient sea entity.
Adventure Use
Mirun is equal parts guide, enigma, and long-burning fuse. He may serve as:
- A cryptic but loyal captain
- A prophet of an emerging sea cult
- A key to navigating dream-infused waters
- A passive servant of something vast, deep, and asleep
Whether ally, prophet, or future antagonist—his presence ripples beyond the ship he sails.
