Selkies

Before the establishment of the Lazulite Empire, Selkies and other non-human creatures lived freely across the lands that would later become the Empire. As the Empire expanded and became more human-centric, other species were forced to the edges of the realm, or reduced to living as second-class citizens among humans. Selkies became highly sought after - their sealskins which allowed them to shift into their aquatic form and return to the sea became prized, both as trophies and a method of ensuring loyalty from the selkie whose skin you possessed.   Selkies, while having always been a curious and friendly people who would often marry humans and have children with them, began to withdraw and hide themselves away. Previously content to live freely among humans in coastal towns and villages, many chose to return to the sea or seek new lives abroad. Those who could not bear to leave their families behind would hide their sealskins away and attempt to pass as human, for fear of discovery.   Many selkies had some level of empathic ability, often able to read the psychological and emotional state of a person as easily as their facial expression. Some selkies also possessed other gifts - and as the presence of selkies became rarer, so the stories of selkie abilities became exaggerated into legends often far more grand than any truth.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

The good of one contributes to the good of the whole - selkies will share whatever they have with those in need. Wherever possible, do others no harm.

Average technological level

Selkies are a people who are very attuned to nature, and tend to not pursue technology. They live simply, often as weavers, healers or fisherfolk.

Common Etiquette rules

It is customary to make a point to address community elders with respect, acknowledging them first in a social setting.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Selkies pay great attention to the cycles of the moon, often timing events and celebrations to coincide with the full or new moon. During the full moon, land-based selkies will often return to the water for the night, or if unable to change form for any reason, will spend the night by the water, longing for their roots.

Coming of Age Rites

Selkies are considered to have come of age when they are first able to change their form, which usually happens around the age of 15 or 16 years old for seaborne selkies. For landborne selkies with a human parent, this can take longer, and it is not uncommon for their first change to occur in their mid to late 20s.

Ideals

Courtship Ideals

Selkies tend to place no stock in gold, gems or other riches. They are far more likely to be impressed by handmade gifts of natural materials, whether practical or decorative. Traditional courtship gifts include driftwood carvings, handwoven fish nets, and jewellery. Provision and protection play a part in traditional selkie courtship, with potential suitors expected to be able to show they can hunt and provide both marine and land-based foods, and display their strength and physical prowess.

Relationship Ideals

Selkies mate for life, and expect the same from their partners. They expect a bond of absolute trust and commitment to be established, and betrayal by a partner is something few selkies ever recover from. Selkies shun human gender-based relationship roles within their own culture, but will often adopt those of the human communities they settle in to help them integrate and go unnoticed.

Major organizations

Selkies tend not to join any major organisations, but are often associated with healer's guilds and weaver's guilds.
