Fey

The fey, also known as the otherfolk, the fairies and the like technically have no physical form, they are beings of pure thought and magic. The oldest race in the world, the fey have over time taken on mortal appearing forms in their various kingdoms, kingdoms usually hidden from the mortal world. No fey can die by mortal means, but magic can end their lives.   Fey are responsible for many of the magical creatures in this world, having over time imbued animals, plants and all sorts of things with magic, creating sentient species and beings. While fey keep to themselves, it is considered a chaotic chance of luck for any mortal to encounter these beings.   In recent times, many magical species (unicorns, dryads, will-o-wisps) were thought to be individual species, but it was later revealed they were fey given physical form by a process known only to the fey (and the gods). This process allows the fey to assume physical form by bonding with a corporeal object or place. In such ways the dryads, elementals, djinns, pixies and naiads able to come into being. However, should their physical form be slain, they will be shunted back into the fey realms. It is possible for fey to conceive children in this way, and these children are either mortal or fey themselves, depending on the sire.
