Welcome to The Known World
When playing Dungeons and Dragons, I prioritise telling a story we, players and Dungeon Master, can enjoy. For that to happen, I need to have a pretty good idea of both my world and the characters you all inhabit. Hence: World Anvil. This website allows me to store all the information I need in neat articles to be able to show to you, the players. This article is a little introductory article to help me guide you round the format and playing in this world as a whole. While not strictly necessary, I would advise looking every so often at the articles I post here. Don't go overboard, but maybe your character will discover something about an area they would know about or discover more about a character they are interested in. This is a platform mainly for me to organise my world, however, it does have benefits for players too.
Character Creation
What your character will be is a good question when creating your character. Some characters have very specific goals laid out in their backstories, while others are more general and on a journey of self discovery. Either style is fine with me, typically I'd ask to discuss the idea of the character with you so I know what general idea your character is going for. I love to see interesting characters and how they play out, so be creative (or don't sometimes generic fighter #402 is still fun to play) and have fun with your character, try not to make one that you'll get bored of three session in and ruin my great plans for them I was brewing for down the line. Class. All of the Player's Handbook classes and Artificer are allowed along with the official supplement subclasses. The Matthew Mercer subclass: Gunslinger is typically not allowed, I'd rather you just play a regular fighter subclass and you could take the Gunner Feat and I'd just start with firearms. The Bloodhunter class isn't allowed, personally I think it's a weird class that doesn't really make sense (like is it suppose to be a fighter? ranger?). Usually if you have homebrew you like send it my way, I'll have a look if I like the idea but am iffy on them we could see about tweaking some features otherwise I'd probably allow it. Race. Again anything from the Player's Handbook is allowed and most races from the other official books are allowed with some exceptions. I don't allow the races only seen in Guildmaster's Guide to Ravinca, (Simic Hybrids, Loxodon, Vedalken) personally I don't get them; for a similar reason I don't allow Verdan or Kalashtar; I don't allow Aarakocra because I don't like their look (all the humanoid animals already weird me out) and also 50ft of flight is ridiculous (I know I could just nerf it but reason 1 isn't good enough to kick them out so these to stacked is just enough and the Dragonborn subraces and Pallid Elf subrace are also not allowed because they are kind of Wildemount specific, and we aren't there. There are a few changes to a couple races, but I'd tell you them prior to playing them. Background. When making a character, avoid using the Strixhaven/Wildemount backgrounds. Everything else is fine. Stats. Please use Point Buy to generate the stats for the character, along with Point Buy your character also gains 1 free feat. I find this balances the game out, as characters are walking bazookas at level three and usually have more variety between them. Intelligence Proficiency Points. A system I found that I enjoy, and allows for characters with high intelligence to have a use besides lore dumps. Depending on your Intelligence modifier you lose or gain proficiencies, showing how your knowledge has either helped you develop more characteristics or hindering your development as you've progressed through your life. The table goes as followed:Intelligence Modifier | Proficiency |
---|---|
-1 | One skill proficiency lost |
0 | None |
+1 | One skill proficiency gained |
+2 | One skill proficiency and one tool proficiency gained |
+3 | One skill proficiency, one tool proficiency and one language gained |
+4 | Two skill proficiency, one tool proficiency and one language gained |
+5 | Two skill proficiency, two tool proficiency and one language gained |
