Elves

Elves are a magical people of otherworldly grace, living in the world but not entirely part of it. With their unearthly grace and fine features, elves appear hauntingly beautiful to humans and members of many other races. Like the branches of a young tree, elves are flexible in the face of danger. They trust in diplomacy and compromise to resolve differences before they escalate to violence, They have been known to retreat from intrusions into their woodland homes, confident that they can simply wait the invaders out. But when the need arises, elves reveal a stern martial side, demonstrating skill with sword, bow, and strategy. Elves take up adventuring out of wanderlust. Wishing to see all the world has to offer at their own pace.

History

The elves of the realm live primarily in the northern hinterlands within the lush forests held there. The elves live in relative harmony with the world but in fractured tribes. Often times they are disdainful and sometimes hostile to their neighboring kin due to differing views on the world and opinions of how to lead the elven people. Each tribe has its own matriarch serving as the tribe's spiritual and political leader, these matriarchs are the most respected people in elven society. To harm a tribes matriarch is a crime all elven kind recognizes as barbaric. Recent expansionist tendencies of the human kingdom of Eredhen has left relations between the elves and humans strained while the elves have became unprecedentedly friendly with one another.   In the time of the uprising, the elves were one of the three great races that banded together to defeat the Magocracy. The mage's attempts to take the sacred city of twin elms brought fire to the elven people who had remained neutral for years. The elves at the time were ruled by a single matron known as Medea of Sunlight who0 stirred the elves into rebellion. The Magocracy had taken too much elven land, subjugated to many elven clans. Their loyal spellcasters became the backbone of the rebellion. They were instrumental in the fall of the mages, without them there would have been little hope for the uprising's survival past its infancy.   At the diplomacy table at the end of the war the elves were rewarded for their sacrifice and dedication to the cause. Their ancestral homelands in the north were returned to them while the plains in the south would be the heart of the human nation. Though disgruntled that only their land in the north was returned they agreed to the terms and were recognized as a sovereign nation.   This nation would not last long as the Kingdom of Eredhen rose to prominence the elven nation began to fracture with the death of Medea of Sunlight. In their moment of weakness Hodgen the Conqueror swept through the land and laid waste to the elves. He burnt villages to the ground and raided across the frozen north with his band of marauders all in the name of greed. He took all he could from the elves, targeting where they were weak and divided, avoiding the strongest elven communities when they were most defended. He became a scourge that wiped across the frozen tundra. When winter set in it is said that he took shelter in a cave deep within a ravine, a place that took true courage to get to. He forced each and every one of his men to make the climb down carrying a portion of their horde of treasure. Those who survived entered the cave with Hodgen and hid away their fortune. The winter was harsh and unforgiving, the merciless cold claiming many lives until all that remained were a few loyal men, a mountain of gold, and bones. Hodgen's sourge ended with that winter and he was entombed within that cave by his most loyal of men, left with his treasures and accomplishments and his men who would protect him even in death.   The years after Hodgen the Conquerer would see the last of the elves fractured and isolated. Where they remain to this day, wary and suspicious of even their kin.
