1.1.1. Relevant background information
Geography of Lutédólin de Nalanmar
Summary: The coastal town is built close to the shoreline, with the outermost buildings just a few meters out of reach for the highest tide. The beach south of it is wide and open. Vegetation is sparse that close to the water.
Association of Lutédólin with Nalanmar in 1081 PN
Summary: 14 settlements on the perimeter of Nalanmar were officially declared part of the parent city in 1081 PN. This included the town Lutédólin whose population was rather divided on the topic. While younger inhabitants tended to welcome the union, older generations were prone to lament a perceived loss of identity.
Local culture
Summary: Education levels in the town are significantly lower than in the academically-minded parent city. The main demographic have always been working-class people such as fishers, carpenters or smiths. Religious beliefs and superstitions were deeply engrained in the inhabitants' minds at the time of the first encounter.
Potentially related events
Summary: Closer inspection of the town's history revealed a case of an infectious disease which, according to today's science, should have spread further than it reportedly did. This took place approximately 7 years before 1083-4-2/AN was officially encountered for the first time. This adds further support to the creature's claims of caring for the townspeople, under the assumption that it said the truth about hatching in this place.
At the beginning of Chychlun 1083 PN, tidal fluctuations were approaching the maximum amplitude. Settlements on the Eastern Island Chain also reported unusually strong groundquakes during the two weeks leading up to the first encounter. These are likely explanations for the enormous wave witnessed by the fishermen who apprehended 1083-4-2/AN.
1.1.2. First encounter with local civilians
Eye witness reports of initial encounter
Summary: While details vary, the reports of all three fishermen agree on the most important aspects. They saw 1083-4-2/AN interact with a massive tidal wave, seemingly bending the light from the sky and redirecting it into the water. It sent a wordless warning into their minds, stunning them for a moment but not deterring them. After the fishermen wrestled it to the ground, the wave subsided. The creature was brought to the town prison immediately afterwards.
Eye witness reports of imprisonment
Summary: This file contains reports from prison guards, neighbors and the reporter who published the article in the local newspaper, as well as reports from friends and family of the fishermen who captured it. All agree that 1083-4-2/AN repeatedly tried to escape. The most salient experience was that the creature became more powerful when the environment was brightly lit.
Response of local population
Summary: Responses varied from fear to pride and unashamed curiousity. Locals were quick to take the story at face value, and few questioned whether the creature existed. Since eliminating the entire town was not an option, it was decided to undermine their credibility in the eyes of outsiders. Civilian scientists involved in the preliminary examination were paid to keep silent. The story still persists today but is mostly seen as a myth by locals and outsiders alike.
1.1.3. Incidents in custody
1083 PN - 1182 PN
Summary: The amount of light was carefully controlled to strike a balance between keeping 1083-4-2/AN alive and limiting its power. While the threshold was being determined, there were several occasions when 1083-4-2/AN absorbed too much light and used it to deform and even melt the walls of its cell. On other occasions, it manipulated environmental conditions, for example by creating water puddles that made pursuers slip or by making the air stale so that guards became sleepy.
1183 PN - 1282 PN
Summary: After 1083-4-2/AN repeatedly attempted to break free, the limbs which seemed instrumental to its powers were systematically crippled. Further incidents revealed that 1083-4-2/AN can regrow these limbs when there is a sufficient amount of light. Surveillance was increased, but remained challenging because the creature's activities were hard to observe in the necessary darkness. Additionally, there were several cases of personnel bonding with 1083-4-2/AN and trying to help it escape.
1283 PN - 1382 PN
Summary: 1083-4-2/AN appears to have realized that its attempts at breaking free allow our scientists to better understand its abilities. It has adapted its strategy to waiting for long periods of time, only trying to escape twice in this century. Both incidents involved young personnel who lacked the experience to resist its temptations.
1382 PN - 1482 PN
Summary: 1083-4-2/AN seems apathetic and barely responds to its environment. It neither resists any procedures performed on it, nor does it reply to questions posed by researchers or interrogators. To this date (Murilun 9, 1448 PN) there have been no new attempts at escaping.
