Thaumaturgy

Thaumaturgy, colloquially referred to as "magic" or "sorcery," exists within the Interminate Lands, made possible by the weakened nature of reality in this realm. Its potency varies dramatically across the region, reaching its zenith in areas known as Goetic Lines. These arcane hotspots amplify thaumaturgical potential to such an extent that even the weakest thaumaturges can manifest extraordinary effects, turning the impossible into reality.

A thaumaturge’s strength is defined by a system of Classification , represented by a color-coded scale. From the weakest to the most powerful, the scale ascends from White, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, and finally, Black: a level of ability so rare it borders on myth.

Two elements define a one's thaumaturgical prowess. The first element, thaumaturgic potential, is shaped by both immutable and transient factors. Lineage, race, and natural aptitude form the foundation of a thaumaturge’s power, granting some a head start while leaving others with only a faint spark. Temporary influences, such as proximity to a Goetic Line, the presence of enchanted artifacts, or the effects of arcane potions, can amplify this potential dramatically. In areas where magic saturates the air, even the least skilled may achieve feats that defy comprehension.

While all sentient beings possess the ability to interact with magic, the degree of potential varies widely. Humans are often seen as versatile but limited, while races like the enigmatic Larantavar are born with an inherent connection to the arcane. For these beings, thaumaturgy is more an extension of their very nature.

Yet, raw potential is not enough. The second component is a thaumaturge's technical mastery and knowledge of the arcane tongue of Inärtä. Knowledge of this tongue and the ability to manipulate and shape reality using its runes and words are the primary ways thaumaturgy manifests. Inärtä is an ancient and esoteric language, its origins and creation lost to the sands of time. It is said that it was this language of creation that the Ethereal Lady spoke to weave the Interminate Lands into existence, and it is today used as a liturgical tongue by the Amarian Church. There are countless dialects and variations of Inärtä, which results in numerous variations in the way thaumaturgy can be cast. While it is possible for anyone with an inborn aptitude for thaumaturgy to perform the art, knowledge of Inärtä is critical for any thaumaturge to achieve mastery. Without a sufficient understanding of the language and the correct method of pronunciation and inflection, a thaumaturgic effect cannot be reliably produced; in some cases, it may even backfire on the wielder.

Thaumaturgy encompasses a vast and intricate array of disciplines, with hundreds of schools offering unique approaches to harnessing magic. These schools are broadly grouped into six major categories, each reflecting a fundamental aspect of the craft. Telepathy manipulates thought and communication, bridging minds across distances or uncovering hidden truths. Transmutation alters the physical properties of matter, reshaping reality itself. Conjuration summons objects, creatures, or energies into existence. Divination peers through the veils of time and space to perceive distant or hidden events. Enchantment imbues objects or beings with magical properties, granting them new capabilities or enhancing their natural strengths. Manipulation is a dangerous discipline that involves the direct control of forces, elements, or energies, bending the world to the thaumaturge’s will.
