Goldwater pulls US out of UN

Diplomatic action

The US refuses to be in an organization that is willing to recognize the People's Republic of China.

In one of his first acts as president, Goldwater orders the US removed from the United Nations, saying 'communist infiltration' by the People's Republic of China forced his hand. (The PRC is not yet a member, but several UN states have chosen to recognize it.) His decision is met with international uproar but limited domestic resistance.
