Soulshard - Presence

The Soulshard skill represents a character's understanding of mysterious shards scattered across Alwaus, and their abilities to tap into and control the souls of the powerful celestials that reside within them. While anyone can activate a shard to unleash the specific magical effect that the shard unleashes in pure instict, a character with the Soulshard skill can draw out and manipulate that power to achieve greater and far more versatile results - provided of course they have what it takes to stir the shattered remains of celestial conciousness to stir from within the stones...   A character cannot have ranks in more than a single magical skill at one time. Soulshard allows the character to use magic during sessions, typically by making a Soulshard skill check as an action. Unlike other magical skills, the Soulshard skill has significant restriction on the character's conditions to attempt a Soulshard skill check. Most notably, the character will need to be holding a soulshard as a magical implement to attempt the check, as the character themselves does not typically have any magical ability themselves. Instead, they must convince or coerce the celestial powers within the stone to obey their will. While other magical skills have a pre-set list that shows what spell types that skill has access to, the spell types avaliable to a character with the Soulshard skill is instead determined by the specific stone they are using as a magical implement. See the item entry for the specific soulshard in question to determine what spell types can be used in which context.   Your character should use this skill if...   -Your character wants to use an immolation rune to unleash a great gout of flame or simply light a campfire.
-Your character wants to create a protective aura of ice with an ice storm rune.
-Your character want to identify the meaning and purpose of a rune inscribed on a runebound shard.
Your character should NOT use this skill if...   -Your character wants to cast a spell without the aid of a magic soulshard. That would require a different magic skill, depending on the spell involved.
-Your character wants to translate the glyphs in an ancient Dwarven ruin. That would use the Knowledge (Lore) or Knowledge (Culture) skill.
-Your character wants to use a soulshard's activation effect, as this does not require a magic skill check.
