Damage Types
When damage is being dealt to a player character or an adversary from a either successful Combat Check or an enviromental effect, the check typically generates a number of base damage plus one additional damage per uncancelled s (with a few notable exceptions to this). All damage dealth this way is assigned a Damage Type, the reflects the way that that damage is inflicted on a character in a narrative sense. For example, a warrior who uses a sword would typically deal Slashing damage, while a different warrior armed with a heavy mace would instead have their damage represented as Force damage. Like wise, a pyromancer who engulfs a foe in blue-hot flame would be dealing Fire damage, while the screeching howl of a Harpey Screamer would certainly be Sonic damage. While most adversaries, weapon, and spell templates mention what type of damage the referred to mechanic deals, common sense should give way to hard rules and the GM has final say as to the specifics of the damage inflicted.
An important thing to keep in mind is that the vast majority of the time the type of damage being dealt is not going to be relevant, as most life is Alwaus is just as vulnerable to the edge of knife as it is to the crackle of lightning. In some cases however, a character or adversary may have a resistance or weakness to one or more types of damage types, and in rare cases may even be immune or heal from damage inflicted from a certain type. In these cases the interaction with different magic types will be clearly listed on the adversary's stat block, however there are certain things such as species templates, gear, and talents that may give Player Characters interactions with different damage types as well.
Damage Types are split into two different categories: Physical and Energy. It is important to note that does not translate into non-magic and magic, as an improvised firebomb can still do Fire damage and an Attack Spell that tear a boulder from the ground and throws it at an opponent would certainly deal Force damage. Whenever something reference Physical or Energy damage it refers to any and all types of damage in the below table. Silver or Magical Damage refers to attacks that deal a form of Physical Damage that has the Silvered or Magical Quality attached to them. These attacks still do their designated form of Physical Damage however they ignore Resistances or Immunities the target must have against that damage type (unless specifically stated otherwise).
Physical Damage Types | Description | Energy Damage Types | Description |
---|---|---|---|

Slashing Damage | Damage taken from cuts and lacerations, typically from swords or claws by also from common aeromancy spells. | Cold Damage | Damage taken from freezing temperatures and spells cast from cryomancy spells. Sonic Damage | Damage caused from sonic waves. While certainly devastating against species who rely on hearing to navigate the world Sonic damage is known to crush bones and liquify organs in a manner comparable to Force damage. | ||
Silver Damage | Silver Damage is a secondary damage type that "attaches" to other types of Physical Damage types. | Mental Damage | A rare damage type that directly targets the mind of the defender, this damage type is available to only a few species and spellcasters in Alwaus making it an unexpected avenue of attack against most adversaries. |
Radiant Damage | The blinding light of Divine magic is most of celestial in origin and notably potent against undead and Synmatre. | ||
Necrotic Damage | The slow drain of life force from poisons and necromancy spells is considered an dishonorable way to win most fights. |
