The Conduit
All these talks of wings when there is nothing left above. Just when we thought these gods were dying, they were merely sharpening their blades.-The Horror Xelex after he had revealed his nature to Ilgor of the Skullbrood Clan, explaining why he had such a vested interest in her.
Career
Qualifications
There are no qualifications beyond not being a Shadow Touched Child, though this was also put into question when Ilgor became a Conduit during her stay in the Elsewhere. The Conduit is chosen at random by the denizens of the Elsewhere. In their minds, any Child is capable of carrying out this duty. As the grand designs of The Quartet involved making all their children gods in the end. To a degree they are right, the task done by The Conduit isn't special, but the honor it brings, is.
Other Benefits
While The Conduit isn't paid for their duty, they are allowed a few certain perks, as well as a few favorable outcomes that were not intentionally planned. The first being that the title, Magnus or Magna is a lifetime title, and cannot be taken away. It signifies that the person has done a great service to The Elsewhere and it's people. More importantly, the Conduit is given the knowledge that they have relieved Alnya: The Queen of the Fae from yet another burden she must bear.
The second benefit is that despite the best efforts of the Elsewhere's efforts, that all the power barrowed from the ritual Bonfire Sol, the Conduit is unable to give it all back. Meaning that the person conducting the ritual is given a massive amount of power based strictly off residual energy that clings to the soul like a syrup. The Conduit is elevated in power by leaps in bounds, making nearly all former Conduits candidates for Apotheosis. To become part of The Fledgling Gods.
The third, is a subtle one. It grants them briefly the eyes of a god, fully capable of seeing the mechanisms that operate this world, fully capable of seeing as many truths that come to mind during the brief time they hold the power. It's the euphoria, the pure joy of creation and directing such an immense force. To know they have the trust of their people, to feel that connection to their creators.
Operations
Provided Services
The Conduit as it is implied, acts as a conduit for an immense power during the Bonfire Sol ritual of renewal. They are tasked with bearing the weight of a portion of the Divine Spark of every last living thing in the Elsewhere to restore the soils and ground waters of the Floating Continents. They are tasked with funneling this force into the failing sun that floats above the Elsewhere, Magnolia, where the sun disseminates this power for the world to enjoy.
The Conduit all channels a portion of that energy toward Alnya to take, to renew her strength, to alleviate her burden at maintaining the Elsewhere for just a short period of time.
The Conduit profession is fascinating. It seems to blend spiritual and practical elements in a way that adds depth to the world. I can imagine the challenges someone in this role might face, balancing their responsibilities with the expectations of others. It would be interesting to see how a Conduit navigates complex situations.
The Conduit is a unique place in the Elsewhere, A role most people want, but very few get. You're right, that it blends a mix of practicality and spirituality, its meant to be a rather formative experience for anyone luck enough to do it. I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
