Second Chance

The meritocratic nation of Nicandria exerts a constant pressure upon its populace, do better, improve yourself, be useful. Although they provide support through free general education to children, those that fall through the cracks due to negligent parents, have been forced to flee their home or for any other reason, there is the group called Second Chance. Not only children but also adults that have failed to develop common skills like reading, writing and basic arithmetic are given a chance to learn. They hold regular classes throughout the year as their students might come at any time and availability to study is often limited.

They only operate in the capital and consists mostly of volunteering teachers from various schools with some support from professors and students ofthe Lauren Halls of Estinisca. They produce simple textbooks and worksheets for students to practice with between lectures and for some children they try to move them into the general school.

Public Agenda

To the general populace they appear as a charitable organisation that supports those in need with education to prevents the city from filling up with the uneducated. Due to the strong meritocratic viewpoint the general populace hold, uneducated people are often looked down upon as something akin to a spreading plague causing problems. Second Chance takes care of this problem and turns the uneducated problematic masses into model citizen.

  Hidden agenda
During its inception, there were few volunteers and initial capital was running out as association with uneducated adults was slightly taboo. No other groups wanted to be seen supporting a uncertain organisation with unproven results in fear it would come back and hurt their reputation — fools that did not understand that the uneducated adults where a lost cause. As Second Chance started to consider to close its doors by the end of the year, a large donation was made to them by House Blackstone. Their name was not officially there and several volunteers where included with the donation sending a simple message to the organisation, we own you and will do what we want here. They became a centre for education on the surface and beneath a place to find useful servants and indoctrinate them to almost worship House Blackstone.
