Spuguts

"Spuguts are an odd species that combines the docility of a dog with the defenses of a skunk. In a way they're more like dog with an overactive bladder that leaks when getting overly excited. Unfortunately, despite their gentle nature, I do not believe they would make for good house pets."

-Sir Christopher Locke, Juniper Expedition

Basic Information

Anatomy

The average spugut sports a two pairs of short legs on a body that is easily described as a football. Adding to this already odd creature's form is its long snout, which acts as a gripping mechanism. This helps the spugut reach up into taller bushes and plants while foraging, allowing them to pluck berries, insects, and other tasty snacks.

Ecology and Habitats

Due to their vulnerability and docile nature, spuguts commonly live in herds, or sounders, of 4 or more and are commonly found in the Light Wood of the Forest of the Forgotten, plains, and swamps of West Realm. Occasionally they can be found in Mild Wood, but these wanderers tend to be quickly picked off by more ferocious beasts living within the woods. There is little data on their existence on other continents.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Spuguts are omnivores that forage the undergrowth in the forest. While their main diet is focused on roots, fruits, flowers, and fungus they also commonly consume various insects, rodents, small reptiles, and fish.

Biological Cycle

Unlike many other species living in West Realm's forests, spuguts are active all year round and frequently feed off of roots to survive the harsh winters.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Spuguts have special scent glands that sit behind each leg and their tails. These glands typically release a very sweet yet potent odor as a self-defense mechanism.
