The cause of the emergence of the condition is generally believed to be the use of the metaphysical dimension that allows for FTL travel. It is theorized that the exposure to the metaphysical energy in said dimension reacted to the neural pathways of some induviduals, flowing through their minds rather than around as it does with others. There is no way to tell who would be affected in this way as the subjects' genetic structures were not altered in any way. A psychic does not genetically transfer MES to their children.

MES by itself does not inherently have any symptoms due to it not being a physical condition. However MES subjects can suffer different problems depending on an induvidual's metaphysical sensitivity, mental conditions and willpower. Highly sensitive subjects can have extremely painful migraines from the volume of energy that passes through their neural pathways.

Treatment for MES can take many different forms both mental and physical. The least labour intensive and simplest is to give the subject small regular doses of seditive drugs. However, this treatment can be damaging to the subject as it doesn't provide proper control of the MES and can lead the subject into drug addiction.
