Akrid
Akrid are the native fauna of the planet Sheol. They are highly aggressive and territorial and can appear in a variety of different forms. Akrid appear to have evolved as the only animal kingdom on Sheol, either having driven the others to extinction or having been the only one to have survived a major geological catastrophe. Akrid can appear as mammalian, insectoid, reptilian or avian. Bespite wildly varying physicality all Akrid share some common traits.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Highly variable between different Akrid sub-species.
Biological Traits
Despite their wildly different phenotypes, all Akrid share a few biological traits:
1) Biolumonessance - All Akrid have some form of Biolumonessance. Different sub-species use it in different ways.
2) Massive internal body temperatures and perfect heat containment - Akrid are completely invisible to heat sensors and infrared technology. They do however have internal body temperatures measuring in the hundreds of degrees Celsius. The larger the Akrid the higher their internal temperature. Due to the massive amount of energy an animal would need to support these temperatures it is theorized that Akrid can absorb or "eat" ambient thermal energy to supliment their diet. For the largest of Akrid this may be the reason for their extended periods of comatose hibernation, absorbing geothermal energy for sustenance occasionally waking to eat living prey for needed minerals. Despite being invisible to heat sensors, all Akrid have heat sensory organs. When they die Akrid release their stored thermal energy as thermal radiation. This has been observed to act as a form of beacon to other Akrid, drawing them to the corpse.
3) Accelerated Regeneration - Akrid are capable of extremely fast self-healing. Likely linked to the insane metabolism that produces their massive body temperatures. In some sub-species this can manifest as near-instantaneous regeneration of missing body parts, while in others manifests as a way to reload evolved biological weaponry or cheat death from otherwise lethal trauma by healing all wounds while in a comatose state.
Genetics and Reproduction
Unknown, likely highly variable between different Akrid sub-species.
Growth Rate & Stages
Highly Variable between different Akrid sub-species.
Ecology and Habitats
All Akrid seem to thrive in cold temperatures. Experiments have also shown high tolerance to heat, likely due to the thermal activity under Sheol's surface.
Dietary Needs and Habits
With a few exceptions, Akrid are almost universally carnivorous. The smaller sub-species favour swarm and pack tactics, while larger ones typically act as ambush predators.
Biological Cycle
Data is minimal. Larger Akrid are theorized to hibernate for long periods of time due to the relative scarcity of resources.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Varies greatly between different Akrid sub-species.
Domestication
Due to the sheer aggressive nature of Akrid it is impossible to domesticate them. Due to their perfect adaptation to Sheol's environment, hyper-aggressive nature, extreme survivability and ambiguous genetic heritage, Akrid are theorized to be some sort of failed, or more terrifyingly, successful form of biological weapon.
Facial characteristics
Varies greatly between different Akrid sub-species.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Planet-wide, different sub-species are more prevalent in different areas.
Average Intelligence
Varies greatly between different Akrid sub-species. Some sub-species are little more intelligent than swarming insects like locusts, while others show uncannily clever thought processes, learning from past encounters and forming behavioural strategies and tactics to circumvent previous obstacles.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Highly variable between different Akrid sub-species.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
All Akrid sub-species appear to be symbiotic and parasitic to each other.
Scientific Name
Akrid
Origin/Ancestry
Unknown, distinctions such as mammal, reptile, or insect appear secondary to the classification of Akrid.
