Heavy Lance
A basic military formation employed by most of the Golden Cities, consisting of magic users and heavy infantry.
Composition
Manpower
A heavy lance consists of between 6 and 15 people, with 12 being standard. As lances are usually led by knights, or other members of nobility, they are accompanied by squires which are often shared between the entire formation. There are at most as many squires as there are other lancers, though usually no more than two or three.
Equipment
The heavy infantry wear plate or half-plate, usually accompanied by whatever clothing and decoration they themselves employ. The accompanying mages, typically wizards or clerics, wear whatever armour and magical defenses won't not hinder their spellcasting.
Weaponry
The infantry use battlefield weaponry, such as greatswords, halberds, and poleaxes. They are also trained in ranged combat, though this is not usually part of their primary tactics. The infantry are also equipped with rudimentary grenades (glass spheres filled with powder, lit by a short wick). These do not have enormous explosive impact, but are rather used to confuse and disorient. That said, when thrown accurately, a blast can tear off limbs.
Structure
There's a lance commander, almost always of noble birth, and under them a serjant and serjant-mage, who are chief infantryman and mage respectively.
Tactics
The intended purpose of the lance is for the infantry to flank while the mages lay down suppressive magic and duel any enemy mages. If there are sufficient numbers, the infantry will split into two flanking groups, one lead by the lance commander and one by the serjant. Right before impact, grenades are used to further disorient the enemy.
When engaging mounted enemies, some infantrymen will form a small wall of halberds while the rest throw grenades to disorient the riders while the mages focus on slowing down the approaching cavalry. After the grenades, the "ranged" infantry will utilize crossbows.
When neither of these primary tactics are applicable, the lance commander leads by example using rapid squad tactics and suppressive spells.
