US 1st Arcane
Like arcane forces elsewhere, the US Arcanes undergo far more lax military training than regular forces; they are selected for intellect, arcane aptitude, and creative problem-solving, rather than traditional military qualities. As such, their military training looks more like something you'd see on a college campus than a parade ground. Those selected for service in the Arcanes still receive basic military training, however - marching, drilling with firearms, basic physical education, and basic military discipline are emphasized. They aren't "brainwashed," though; invidual initiative and creative problem-solving abilities are still prized. This leaves Arcane candidates open to criticism for their independent streak and, sometimes, their lack of adherence to the chain of command.
Candidates for the Arcane Expedition volunteer upon enlistment. Final candidates are selected based on intellect and academic merit, with those having attended university or college - or who desire to do so - being preferred.
