History
Many Legends and Stories surround the Mountain's Master and the dwarves who have wielded it. It was first wielded by Vixne Hammerheart. It was a finely made Warhammer the young warrior bore. Nothing ornate just good solid dwarfmake . The actions of one Dwarf made it so much more.
Orcs had begun assaulting dwarven settlements in force. In response the settlements had begun organizing. Small companies were sent out to hold strategic positions while a larger army was assembled. Vixne was a soldier of one of these companies. His company was tasked with guarding a narrow mountain pass that was one three that led to where the dwarven army was beginning to assemble. They arrived at their location and begin work on fortifying it. Dwarves being dwarves it wasn't long before credible defense works were devised and erected. They had just begun plans on expanding their work when a messenger arrived. A large force of orcs was heading their way. Their orders were simple. They must hold the pass until reinforcements arrived. The orcs would be their within two days. Reinforcements were promised within ten days.
Two days later two thousand orcs arrived. The ninety dwarves of the small company saw the force assemble down the mountain from them. These small companies were largely young dwarves like Vixne with a few veterans for stiffening. Legend says a young dwarf expressed fear at the size of the force and Vixne laughed and commented "Do not fear. It just means no matter where you swing you're gonna hit the enemy." Whether this is true or not is lost to history. What is known fact is what followed. For three straight days the orcs launched attacks on the defenders. The narrowness of the pass and the defensive structures built, namely a fifteen foot tall stone wall with a narrow sally gate, severely limited the orcs attacks. However the night of the third night brought calamity.
A particularly heavy attack managed to breach the lone sally gate. Vixne was part of the relief force dispatched to retake the gate. One of the last written reports of the company commander recounts how Vixne fell upon the Orcs like an avalanche and as he fought his hammer began to glow brighter and brighter as if an inner light was dawning. The commanders report says two full score fell to Vixne before he gained the gate. An Orc Champion tried to stand against the young dwarf but each swing echoed like a steel bell. In the face of this onslaught the Champion cowered and when he was finally slain a flash of golden light erupted from the hammer and the orcs fled in terror.
After that battle the hammer would glow faintly when Vixne held it. From that night every swing was bolstered by a sonic attack that seemed to only affect whomever Vixne faced. For two more days the company held and when their commander finally fell Vixne took command. For three more days Vixne was at the front of every attack . When he fought his fellow dwarves took heart and they fought harder.
When the dawn of the tenth day arrived a relief force of five hundred dwarves arrived. They found fifteen defenders, all with previous wounds., who had allowed no orc past them. VIxne became known as Vixne Hammerheart. He named his weapon the Mountain's Master.
The Mountain's Master was passed from father to son for centuries. When the Great Split occurred Cleagin Stoneborn, the first Clan Master of the Clan Stoneborn, named the Mountain's Master the symbol of his office. Since then every Clan Master has wielded it.
Significance
