Entheogenic Trance

Up to date: Summer 2025

This ritualistic trance is reached through the (often) ritualistic intake of entheogenic (hallucinogenic) drugs.
They hold a large significance to many Fey Folk historically, culturally and spiritually.
It is a sought after state of mind and experience in relation to healing, divinition and greater understanding. Plants, mushrooms and chemical compounds can do many fun or less fun things to the chemistry of the brain. Causing hallucinations is one that can fall into both categories. The altered state of consciousness is a sought after effect both as a part of shamanistic rituals and general recreation.

Transmission & Vectors

In most cases, the trance and following hallucinations are induced through consumption or inhalation of hallucinogens. Smoke or edibles are the most common methods. Several herbs and psilocybin mushrooms for example.

Symptoms

Drug-induced hallucinations both visual and auditory, dissociation, delirium. Temporary ego-loss is considered an important part of the experience as well.
When induced during rituals, such as a Blót, the hoped effect is some level of divination - a hope to get an insight into the will of Fate or a premonition.

Treatment

Generally the trance is best left undisturbed, possibly with supportive or symptomatic care. Observation is advised.

Prognosis

The effects of the trance usually lasts several hours. In some cases, some effects linger for several days.

Sequela

Following the trance, many are followed by a re-evaluation of previous priorities. Many believe themselves forever changed by the experience.
It can do wonders in some cases of psychological illnesses.

History

Trances caused by entheogens and other hallucinogens are as old as discovered history with known practices across the entire globe.
In modern times, it is often viewed as an archaic, primitive practice, but as Our World opens up to the supernatural and magic, so does the curiosity of these rituals.

Cultural Reception

Entering a trance through a ritual is a great honor among those who rever such practices, however many modern societies are hesitant to these paganistic practices, and in many countries the drugs used to reach the trance state are illegal to use.
