Canopic Forest

The Canopic Forests are a biome native to Athwei and occaisionally found on Geron, particularly within the Archaea. The Canopic Forests are a largely made up of Maidens Hair, thin chitinous stalks that grow tough hexagonal interlinking heads from fallen spore of the Canopic Forests. Over the centuries such structures grow to significant sizes, sealing away areas which are left in complete darkness. Inside these havens which can be up to 500 tall (or closer to 300 on Geron) a secondary ecosystem of strange bioluminescent creatures thrive, both within shallow pools of Laven Water at the base of the Maidens Hair and amongst the long stalks. Somewhat surprisingly, the inside of the Canopic forests have greatly reduced Miasma and provide a source of breathable air.   Lookalikes to the Maidens Hair known as Plug Larvae live within the Canopic Forests, either taking the place of dead or sick individual strands. Such creatures have a head ornament virtually indistinguishable from the chitinous top of a regular strand, and they even have strange modified hairs capable of locking in with other strands. Such creatures are parasites, leaching nutrients from surrounding Maidens Hair or snatching unwary prey who pass by with their fake stalk which is actually their prehensile body.
