Athan Underdall

3rd Prince of the Royal Ash Fae Athan Underdall (a.k.a. Athy)

Athan Underdall is the conniving, manipulative 3rd Prince of the Ash Fae. He is soon to start his schooling at Nasrelts, Academy of the Arcane. There he intends to collect promising talent to join the ranks he has already begun to build into a faction that supports his bid for the position of Crown Prince.
Already that faction includes his own squadron of Knights, The Pyre Knights and many noble families. It is rare for a royal so young to have already build so much support to his claim despite being so young.
Athan is a born leader. He takes charge and exudes confidence. People follow him instinctively. He is the first to act, the first to move. He never misses an opportunity to strike and is known for his antagonistic nature and cruel trickster attitude.
Athan's goals in life are simple; become the Ash King and reunite and protect the only person he loves, Nathiel. The two were separated at a young age and Athan has trained and planned for the time when he will have her back at his side. He firmly believes Nathiel will be the most talented graduate of his class at Nasrelts and therefore no one will question him collecting her into his ranks but even were she the weakest he would still keep her close to his side.
Athan's magic levels are nothing to scoff at but he has always excelled with and preferred a weapon over magic. He is more than proficient with a sword and many of weapons and he is always ready for a fight.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Athan is in peak physical form. Decades of training with weapons of all forms have left him muscular and honed much like a weapon himself. He is tall and strong but not overly bulky as the Blood Folk are.

Facial Features

Athan has a strong brow and sharp cheekbones. His grey eyes have small shadows under them as all Ash Folk do as a result of their colouring.

Identifying Characteristics

The most obviously feature about Athan is that he is an Ash Elf. He looks like an Ash Elf, he acts like an Ash Elf, he thinks like an Ash Elf.
What sets him apart among his people is the fact that he is quite tall and is seen as handsome among already beautiful Elves.
Athan has an identifying scent of leather and smoke. He is always wearing armour of some kind and most often it is made of or partially made of hardened leather. Even most of his non-amour attire have leather in some form. As an Ash Elf, he is drawn to fire and as a result the scent of smoke clings to him from his near constant proximity to it.

Apparel & Accessories

Athan is a prince and dresses accordingly. He wears stylish, expensive ash fashion clothes, making use of the rare and expensive resources the Southern Territories have from their monster hunts.
He always carries with him an arrowhead made of obsidian. It was given to him by Nathiel when they were young and matches with the one he gave her. He always has it with him in some form; be it around his neck, tied to his wrist or in his pocket.

Specialized Equipment

A pair of fairly long, dao broadswords made of obsidian held by a grip wrapped in expensive, dark grey snake leather, a fairly common and dangerous beast found in the South.
The blades have a thin, small cross-guard, offering just enough protection to the owner's hands, as well as adding a weight balance to the blade. The cross-guards are rounded on one side each and smooth of the other, allowing the blades to be sheathed together as one.
A fairly simple pommel is decorated with no gems, but gems aren't what makes a weapon great. The pommels are also flat on one side to allow them to be placed together and seem as one sword. They each hold one rune engraved on the flat side of the pommel.
The razer-sharp blades themselves are bare. No markings can be found, but the blades will surely be decorated in battle. They needs no decorations, they only needs to be strong and sharp.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Athan is the fourth son of the Ash King but the 3rd prince since the 1st born son died. As the child of parents not mated, only his father, the King, could claim him. When he was only 5, still a mere babe, the King's favourite consort gave birth to a girl to whom Athan felt an instant connection.
The two children were inseparable until the day that consort was exiled and with her, her daughter. That day Athan's heart was ripped in two.
He exploded in emotion, his hysterics gaining the attention of his father. The King was not pleased with his son's weakness and beat the boy mercilessly.
After he healed, Athan kept his heartbreak hidden and trained relentlessly from then on. He became the perfect son, the perfect prince, the perfect warrior. He joined the fight for the throne; making deals and schemes, backstabbing and being betrayed in turn, growing influence and power so he could fight his siblings. He was determined to become the crown prince, to one day be King so that, after he got her back, he could protect Nathiel.
If he fails, and another gets the throne, they'll kill Nathiel and himself. Athan won't let that happen.

Education

As all elves are, Athan was educated in his homeland throughout his childhood. He attended school with the other Fae children of Lalarius. He also spent his entire childhood training with generals, knights and warriors in an array of weapons as well as extra lessons in politics, etiquette and other princely lessons.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Almost all of the heirs of the Ash have their own squadron of knights but Athan has already built his despite only having reached adulthood 6 years ago.
Many of the heirs built their squadrons after their graduation from Nasrelts. Athan began building his Knights of the Pyre almost 2 decades ago, sourcing warriors loyal only to him and earning that loyalty from them despite being so young.

Mental Trauma

At a young age Athan was torn apart from someone very dear to him and his last image of that person was as she was physically dragged away as he was held back.
That image in conjunction with not being close to that person is incredibly traumatic for Athan.

Morality & Philosophy

Athan is a royal of the Ash Fae which means he is among the cruellest of an already cruel people. He is sadistic and manipulative and uses people as pawns. He finds enjoyment in the suffering of others and turns every situation to his own advantage. But Athan is unusually empathetic for an Ash Folk and can even be persuaded to mercy with strong enough reasoning and he secretly shows softer side for those Fae he views as his own.

Taboos

harming, hurting mistreating Nat Athan is a royal of the Ash and as such he has been raised to revile the cultures other than his own and his allies. He won't stand for their cultures encroaching or being forced upon on his own nation as many within one of those cultures want.
Athan doesn't lose. He refuses. He won't allow himself or those who work under him to lose. It isn't tolerated. Ever.
Athan is possessive of what he views as his, including the people he collects as his underlings. They are his property and therefore he is the only one allowed to use, abuse or harm them. He doesn't take kindly to others breaking that rule and has been known to be vengeful in response. This applies even more so for the one person he actually cares about. No one will ever be allowed to harm her.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Athan wants to be King. He wants power to do as he pleases and protect what is his. He wants to be secure in position and have the ultimate power in his land. He wants to be the one no one can question nor disobey. The one to whom everyone grovels and bows.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Athan grew up training with weapons of all forms and disciplines. He is adept with all weapons but especially the sword, his favoured weapon.
Athan has recently picked up whittling as a hobby. He is nowhere near skilled at it but he's starting to get somewhere. And he likes having a legitimate excuse to have a knife in his hand.

Personality Quirks

Athan is unusually empathetic for an Ash fae. He has more capacity to empathise with others and their emotional reasoning and attachments. He makes attachments easier himself and can be quite soft with those he is attached to. He even occasionally can be convinced to show mercy if the benefits for him can be proven. He will still extort other's emotions to his advantage and sometimes he uses his unusual outlook to discover emotional attachments other Ash Folk may not see and makes full use of discovery for his own gain.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Nathiel - Athan and Nathiel formed a soul deep connection almost instantly upon their meeting. Even as babies they were connected as that connection has remained despite their separation in different realms. As toddlers they were inseparable and would have continued to be so had Saewel not been exiled. Both of them would die to protect the other and being reunited and remaining that way is a driving goal for them both.

Nál - Athan's manservant and aide. Nál is the son of a Noble House among the Ash Folk. The Hedgehog Low Fae has served Athan as since he came of age 40 years ago and is blindly loyal to his liege lord. Nál is quite timid in nature and Athan tends to use him for work behind the scenes or just as a regular manservant and aide to avoid putting Nál outside his comfort zone.

Family Ties

All members of the Royal family are enemies to Athan. They are competitors and backstabbers that would slaughter him at the first chance as he would them in turn.

Religious Views

As all Ash Folk do, Athan worships the Black Pantheon and its dark gods.

Social Aptitude

Athan is an extroverted, street smart trickster. He is smooth-talking and charismatic. He oozes confidences and ego built upon his skills and talents.

Mannerisms

Athan is cruel and sadistic in manner and attitude. He talks in roundabout, evasive sentences and hidden truths and trickery. He is an Ash Fae is every sense; antagonistic, wicked and manipulative. He is a royal and comports himself with dignity and stature, as befitting of his rank.

Hobbies & Pets

Athan took up whittling as a hobby recently. He's still getting the hang of it but he likes having a genuine excuse to carry a knife in his hand at any time or place.

Athan has a Cù-Sìth named Vargus that he trained as a hunting hound for going on a decade. He also uses Vargus for hunting more than just beasts and has trained the beast to attack or stalk on command.

Relationships

Wealth & Financial state

Athan is a royal and therefore money has never been something he need worry about. However he has accrued quite a large fund for himself in his efforts to gain support in his bid for the throne. Despite being one of the youngest royals, he is undoubtedly one of the richest and his personal coffers some of the largest.
