Caleos
By area, Caleos is one of the larger cities on the continent mainly because 75%+ of its buildings are only one story, the rest are usually buildings reserved for the upper classes or some sort of tavern or inn for travellers to find refuge. Caleos is located fairly close to the mainland on the large island of Valaxos. The city mainly gets its income from a large and diverse amount of farms around the city, thanks to Valaxos' climate it is suitable for cultivating many desirable fruits and crops.
Notable Buildings
The Silvered Violin
(Confortable Lifestyle) This tavern is one of the few multifloured buildings and is made out of white limestone. The inside is spacious and cool even on hot days. The food in this tavern is also revered for making local food approachable. The rooms are nicely but simply decorated with olive tables and weaved chairs to keep you cool. A single room runs you around a gold piece a night but there are two larger rooms with three beds. Those will run 1GP 5SP a night and they lack any other furnishing. On the upper floors there are a total of 10 single rooms and two tripplerooms.Demographics
Throughout the shattered isles, Leonin is an important force especially in the navies and as guards. They are however not as common in Caleos due to much more pacifistic and peaceful life as opposed to some other settlements. Living among are a couple of other races, like sun elves and humans to a lesser extent.
Thanks to the nature of their exports the vast majority of citizens are quite well off and amass very respectable amounts of coin and reputation.
Government
Caleos is a mostly self-governed city that is led by a small senate, consisting of 73 people. Of which 36 has to be men and 36 has to be women, the last one is up to chance. The People in the senate are not typically chosen as in a true democracy but is rather a group of the most wealthy and otherwise powerful people in the region. However, equality between the two sexes can be rare in some areas of the world.
Defences
The biggest defensive asset the city has is its fleet. It is rather large for the size of the area it's protecting. During particularly dangerous times the Caleos fleet has acted as mercenary ships which have increased the city's wealth by a lot. Thanks to the nature of the location most of the captains are very experienced and so are their crew. One point where it differs a lot in comparison to most northern cities is that it entirely lacks a city wall.
Industry & Trade
The island of Valaxos has a perfect climate for the cultivation of some exotic fruits and crops. One of them is grapes and Valaxos wine is can be around the best there is, and bottles sometimes range into the 100s of gold. In addition to wine, they also produce passion fruit, mangos and many more exotic fruits that are treasured in the more temperate climates.
Some examples of these more exotic fruits include:
- Flameblossom, not actually a fruit but rather a type of flower. It is extremely difficult to grow and get any significant yield from it, as it requires volcanic soil to grow at its best. Flameblossom is very common in magical rituals, spells and potions that use heat or fire. It is considered a delicacy and has been described to be very sweet and quite spicy.
- Shadowberry, a dull dark-grey berry with a very intense taste of liquorice. Most locals love it but it has been proven to be an acquired taste for travellers. The most common way for locals to eat is either raw or with a heavy sprinkling of salt. To ease into the taste some recommended dishes made from it are tea, jam, and bread or to simply dip into some honey.
Architecture
Due to the lack of any larger forests, most buildings are made out of some sort of stone, either some clay & rock combination, limestone or if you are very rich marble. Most buildings are painted to be white to estimate lime and marble and to repel the sun. This can make the cities a bit hard to navigate for outsiders.
