Entorliken
Situated between the Peppered Lake and the Pond of Acrid and receiving its name from this situation, Entorliken is an idyllic town at the southern border of Riask's Marsh. Being far enough away from the Riaskan landscape and close enough to the capital, it is a popular place to visit both as a stopover and as a trip destination, since it is both well-connected and comparatively safe.
People and Culture
The people of Entorliken are known to be polite, socially distant, and impatient. Some say that their unique dialect of Syollan emerged with the intention of excluding anyone from outside the town, although others have argued that the dialect was allowed to emerge because the people of Entorliken are so isolated. While the stereotype exists that Entorlikans are wealthy and even greedy, this is more a stereotype that is perpetuated by the existence of a select group of the population. Entorliken is rich in unique cultural celebrations and events, and the traditional garments also differ strongly from other regions of Syoll. A large part of the traditions are connected to a heavy consumption of alcohol, causing Entorlikans to become much more lively and rowdy than usual. The traditional garments of Entorliken are tendencially quite tight around the torso and loose around the legs, with colour palettes of white, red, black, and pale yellow and simple or no patterns.Industry and Trade
Entorliken is a relatively gold-rich town, although it is not especially material-rich. It is quite removed from the Syoll-wide material trade and, particularly in terms of agriculture and livestock, self-sustaining. Any other resources that are required are procured from the Riaskan capital, which lies at the other end of the Peppered Lake. This makes Entorliken independent from other Aspects in material terms. In monetary terms, Entorliken is well-off due to its popularity as travel destination and its status as the home of trustworthy banks. The local taxes are steep, but so are the wages, which leads to the (not necessarily true) reputation that Entorlikans are wealthy and well-off. It also leads to the phenomenon of Bleakstonian commuters and travelling tradespeople, who manage to get paid better in Entorliken than in Bleakstone, and who are welcomed by some but skeptically received by others."I have spent half my life travelling to and from Entorliken every day. I have learned their customs, understand their dialect, and feel at times more at home there than in Bleakstone. And yet, they still call me a foreigner, a label I suspect I will never escape."—Holgus Vardins, Memoir (published 1408)
