Central Oriens

The Love Of The Elves For Their Land And Their Works Is Deeper Than The Deeps Of The Sea

Geography

Central Oriens is a geographic region of Ecumene, and is by far the biggest in the world. Due to the continent's position, especially relative to the rest of the world, it lacks the vast regional differences that other lands have. Due to this, climatologists and geographers have grouped together the entire center of the continent together: this center being the best land in Oriens for the building of civilization.   Due to its size, the region has a wide range of elevation levels. The lands surrounding Lake Syl, the single largest lake in the world are quite low to the sea, as are the inland regions. In contrast, the areas near the Horned Sea are much higher in elevation. Two main rivers run through the region, the Sabule, which runs from the Serento Mountains down into the Bay of Vallerm, and the great Syl, the second-longest river in the world, and from which Lake Syl and the Sylvan state get their names.   Despite the region's size, its biomes are quite homogenous. These lands, which are dominated by temperate deciduous forests belong primarily to a humid continental climate, due primarily to the Suntouched Current and its influence on the many water features in the region. Winters are slightly longer than the summers, and are quite cold and get heavy snowfall. Summers, on the other hand, are warm to hot in temperature. Rainfall is more or less evenly distributed throughout the year.

Fauna & Flora

The size of the region makes it so that there is a wide variety of flora and fauna here. A few examples of the many birds you can find in Central Oriens are geese, pochards, ducks, quail, partridge, grouse, grebes, pigeons, doves, turtle-doves, bustards, nightjars, swifts, swamphens, cranes, stilts, lapwings, coursers, jaegers, loons, petrels, storks, herons, kites, hawks, eagles, hoopoes, woodpeckers, and kestrels. Some small mammals include beavers, dormice, red squirrels, marmots, hamsters, voles, hares, rabbits, shrews, and moles. Ibex, red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, elk, moose, wild goats, and roe deer make up the large herbivore population of the region. On the other hand, lynx, wolves, polecats, and brown bears make up the carnivore population.   Other such animals found throughout Central Oriens are the Owlbears, a curious type of burrowing owl that has abandoned its wings in favor of front legs. Lindwurms can also be found in the deep forests, while Peludas (large, vaguely turtle-like, herbivorous drakes) can be found in the fields. Smaller Drakes can also be found here, with Tatzelwurms (smaller, brightly colored relatives of the Lindwurms) and Dragonets (small, omnivorous Winged Drakes) being fairly common. While they have almost all been domesticated, a few herds of wild Orienal Giant Elk can be found within the region.   Some common trees in the region are spruce, pine, beech, and oak trees.

Natural Resources

In addition to an over-abundance of logging and good farmland, the giant region that is Central Oriens holds many, many mineral resources, including but not limited to iron, salt, chromium, copper, lead, silver, zinc, bauxite, gold, aluminium and cobalt.
