Aaron Volkov, last of the Volkov Family - ON HOLD

The Volkov family always knew conflict. Brought up in the The Principality of Asheria by artisan smiths from Soreine, the Dominion of Might seeking a new territory to trade, they made their business in exotic arms and armor with ascetic to them. They pushed in the production of blast furnaces to modernize Asheria's output of metallurgic goods. Many local lords and families refused in funding of the furnaces from the blueprints secrecy and pollution they would bring. This was only their beginning as they took a more hands on approach that would solidify themselves. The Volkov family would invest heavily into the augmentation of Asheria's military, going as far as to create a "Noble Militia". A plan initially was to train warriors from inside their household to form a military company of noble blood loyal to the dominion's intent on pulling Asheria into their territory peacefully. This organization, The Eidolons Taktiki, prepared the few nobles that applied to aid leaders in their armies for the protection of the Principality in the future. This was where Aaron thrived during his youth, and fell when the war finally came to the capital.   Aaron Volkov was 3rd in line to the Volkov house. Born to Lydia and Leon, Aaron followed in the footsteps of his family with pride, learning to run the forges and the military drills, both paramount to his life. He was always a studious boy, taking in all the knowledge he could of politics and battlefield conflict to walk as easily through a war room meeting as well as a ballroom soiree. This led down the path of a war courtier, studied in the battlefield and single combat, yet able to weave support for his house in most political situations. Though a young life of politicking did not leave him unchanged. He fell in love with the game, the drinks and joy of one upping those allied against his house became a love for the more debauched portions of society. While still focused on their role, he slowly garnered a reputation for being a drunkard and braggart of his skill with a blade. Getting himself in many drunken duels with rival households and even those who are inside the Eidolons Taktiki was not an uncommon event. This brought him down in the eyes of his family and the Taktiki, so that when the war broke out his petitions for leading a frontline squad were turned down, he was left with a capital garrison force. This lackluster station would leave him away from the glory he sought, to meet blade to blade with their previous holders. Yet this kept him alive after the devastating defeats and able to witness the horrid fall of the capital. Months turned to years and with every defeat, his petitions continued to be rejected.   During the fall, fires lit up the night and the thundering of cannons and spells smashed the ramparts and ballista fire blew apart the gates. Aaron, sobering up quickly, ran to the battlements with his soldiers. The sounds of a roaring artillery assaulted the ears of the defenders and made the fighting on the walls seem silent in comparison. The drones of metal meeting metal, stone crumbling, and the screaming of dying men and women were the last things he heard as the portion of the ramparts fell and he saw nothing but dust and death. He awoke sometime later, rolling away on a cart with other injured peoples of Asheria. He had failed, like the people around him said. Within his mind, his family and his comrades were gone because he couldn't control himself and his urges. The final nail in the coffin of his failure was as a brother, seeing his eldest sister lying burnt half across her body in tearful agony...she didn't live past the first few days of travel. This was it, this refugee train heading west to gods know where. Maybe this would be the place he reclaims what little honor he has or finally go off the edge and do whatever is necessary to live in this new world being made. Or maybe he would find solace once more in a bottle to quell the demons that taunt him in the night.

Mental characteristics

Education

Formally educated by the noble tutors of Asheria, he took greatly to courtly intrigue as well as the military history of the Dominion, yet tactics eluded him. From this his father, his love for courtly intrigue was pushed even further to the point Aaron was gliding through balls and other gathering with ease. From his mother, his strive for military history was tied with small team tactics and noble duels. With both areas he began to excel prior to his slow descent into hedonistic love for courtly pleasures. He still has the education of noble birth with him, his mind not getting any less sharp in the time after Asheria’s fall. Aaron has even gained skills in the town of Fellbright, mainly the brewing of spirits and other alcohols from the "brewmasters" that live there.

Mental Trauma

Due to the quick and stark horror he witnessed in Asheria, Aaron suffers from a form of PTSD and paranoia. He continuously suffers from nightmares and lack of sleep during most nights, confiding in drink during the worst portions of it. Aaron makes sure to sleep light and keep himself always ready for anything to happen, sneaking around town and eavesdropping on many conversations and gossiping in the Laughing Stone. His paranoia urges him to track any information on the Dominion that travels this far west, speaking with the Alderman constantly on the subject with little result. Due to this, he feels a kinship with many of the refugees who came from any area of heavy conflict and even more so with Madilyn, who he has taken to watch over and help in some way of atonement to his sister who died of similar burns. Due to his failure to lead, he makes sure to stay away from any leadership role, advising when he can but never making a solid decision when it pertains to the lives and wellbeing of others.   Aaron will NEVER take up any leadership positions, he will not have people die under his direction any more.

Morality & Philosophy

Aaron's outlook on the world is optimistically pragmatic. He knows nothing is ever going to get back to what he sees as normal, but people can work to make things slightly better now.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Aaron is still a driven person and has goals, wishing to continue on living for his family, possibly gain revenge on the empire in one way shape or form. Ultimately, he wants to find companionship that will last, even with the world falling apart around him. While he does keep his distance from several of the people in Fellbright, he has made close connections with others.

Social

Family Ties

While strained due to his loose acts during his escapades in court, the Volkov family still held close relations with Aaron in their own ways. Whether his family still lives to this day remains a true mystery to Aaron.   His father, Leon Volkov, was a man of the court that lived and breathed intrigue. His mastery of politics allowed him to establish a strong foothold for the Volkov business and the paramilitary noble group Eidolon. Originally from Soreine, Leon is a man of many words and many talents and always pushed his personal abilities of music and business to further his name and his family. Leon personally trained each of his children how to act in court and how to handle oneself accordingly. Due to this, he kept the most physical distance between himself and Aaron as to not smudge his reputation in court. Despite this, he would write and makes his help known under aliases to support his son in his hardest times.   His Mother, Lydia Helania Volkov, was a 7th child of a tactician noble house in Asheria. Focusing on her training rather than that of the noble courts, she was both an elegant and primal force to be reckoned with. Perhaps this is what attracted Leon to her in the first place. The front for Eidolon, she took great pain to make sure only those worthy of such military leadership entered. She focused on getting Aaron into the program, with a portion of success despite her son's demeanor. Aaron took not to any formation fighting, but to the noble dueling scene. While Lydia pushed for more physical training, she gave up to push for a formal officers training and encouraged his dueling as she saw this as a compromise on both their goals. When Aaron became hedonistic in his court escapades, Lydia was next to her son to get him out of any issue but would scold him relentlessly, punishing in private through rigorous military drills. In her mind, this was no way for anyone with any decent amount of skill to act and she would not let this be allowed. Though every time he was in trouble or inebriated beyond belief, she was there to help.   His eldest sister, Bianca Volkov, was always the favorite of their mother. She was the stern military type like her mother, focusing on the regimenting and training of soldiers for Eidolon and the Asheria's military. Formally being part of both organizations in order to bridge the gap between the two, she was always busy with her duties to both. Neglecting any and all court duties when able to, she hated being around stuffy sycophants of the political circles. Bianca would always challenge Aaron to duels to benchmark his skills. They would always have a friendly rivalry when it came to dueling and leading mock wargames, being neck and neck at all times. Bianca would always end up edging out on top most often. During Aaron’s fall from grace, there was disgust in her dealings with him but she tried the most to bring him back, standing by him for so long. After a night of heated argument, they both stopped talking with each other completely. Oh her proverbial deathbed in the caravan fleeing from Asheria, his sister would belittle him but was a smile, egging him on to not lose the light that he had begun snuffing with debauchery. He holds onto her signet ring and wears it under his gloves everyday.   His younger brother, Elias Volkov, took to the metallurgy their family is known for is a exotic way. He focused most of his time on his art sculptures of metal and stone, using what magical abilities he gained from his sorcerer's blood to bend and heat the metal during the metallurgical process. While he learned much of the court, he stayed far away from the combat practices due to his lithe and slight build. Both Aaron and Bianca protected him as if he were made of eggshells, taking any slight dealt to Elias swiftly and heavy handedly.

Social Aptitude

Motivated to stay out of any spotlight, Aaron tends to be a quiet individual during average comings and goings. He has opened up slightly when it comes to the patrons of the Laughing Stone and has been seen enjoying the little time after work enjoying the entertainment and spirits. Aaron is polite and mild mannered, he is extremely neurotic underneath it all. He tries his best to connect and be kind to the peoples of Fellbright, but wishes to keep a distance from forming and a close connection to any of them.
