The Overbright
There is more to the world than just the cities and forests of its surface. Just as there are whole realms to explore in the vast network of caves beneath the earth, so too are there kingdoms to explore above it.
“The Overbright” is the general name for all the realms that are suspended in the air, far above the ground. At a certain altitude (just above the mountain peaks) clouds become solid, allowing for inhabitation and development.
Geography
A cloud in the Overbright isn’t simply a cloud, any more than a town on earth is simply a town. There’s as much variety in the sky as there is on the ground below - and every cloud has its own unique topography, climate and even habitats.
The Overbright is loosely divided into three layers, based on altitude - each with its own climate and modes of life. The lowest regions of the Overbright are the Stormfields - the realm of weather, turbulence and conflict. Apart from the elementals it spawns, few dwell here permanently.
Above this region are the Cerulean Reaches - a huge layer that climbs many thousands of feet and hosts the majority of the Overbright’s inhabitants. This is a world of drifting kingdoms and continual activity, inhabited by many peoples, plants and animals.
The loftiest part of the Overbright is the High Meridian - where the mightiest ascend and the scanty clouds ultimately give way to the starry astral plane itself.
Ecosystem
Despite their magical natures, aerial fauna are no more aggressive than horses or dogs, and generally don’t attack unless provoked or hungry - although if caught up in combat they may lash out in a panic to get away.
